Well as you may know or dont know, ive had quite a few raiders sitting around the house in various states, from cutting them up with angle grinders to stripping them back to find massive holes in the floor, I finally found a shell which is worth every penny being spent on it, there was no real rust on the car anywhere, had to replace one rear bumper panel and clean up a 5mm hole in the B pillar. Still waiting for the pictures from the bodyshop but this is just a preview on whats been done in the engine bay, lots more bits happening over next few weekends and when I have time. Heres some pictures and will try and keep this updated as much as I can when im completing the bits

As close to as possible, starting off with nothing isn't the easiest things to do. Brackets and other things have been sprayed rather than cleaned and then zinc plated but thats something which can be done at a later day really and when funds allow, this is more of an OE car on budget

Bigfoot

Pictures of the outside, not much space to take pictures at the moment, car is in front of the garage and also got another car in back garden just to take up the last bit of space. All brand new lighting all round, need to sort out fixing the kit better onto the car, missing sideskirts as still up bodyshop as well as the boot trim. Sort out front springs as they are the wrong type believe to be for the non gt turbo version :( and rear torsion bar to raise back up to a normal height.

Cheers for all your comments, and as some of you know my parts collection was getting out of hand so had to put a car put together really, the garage loft is slowing bending back in shape and house loft has only got the seats in there till they are ready to go in. Having a little trouble lining the bonnet up right, run out of daylight in the end, but got it nearly there. Going through loads of boxes and finding random clips and brackets which is great fun trying to work out where they go, might have to start putting pictures up of the bits which im not sure about but engine bay is looking nice, found a few more clips and got some replacement ones from renault. Just need the air filter strap and brackets to tidy that last bit up. Then stick those stickers thanx for Sam Fish and that should be all good to go, then work on the interior, need to strip that down fully to replace some broken plastics and clean up and stick back so all looks good. See a lot of weekends and evenings being busy cleaning and tidying things up.

Jesus, that would be grand, just want a piece of paper with a random number written on it, as long as its lower than the 800+ which these cars were made, maybe even #2, dont want to be first that would be just showing off

There were 800 made - 500 on a G plate, and 500 on an H plate :cartman:

Car's looking good Cocker! Why did you pick a common as muck Raider though? I'd have picked a more rare/exclusive gtt, like a Phase 2 in Glacier White :D

If they did make the 500 on each Reg, so many different stories about how many made.

I have always liked the Raider for its colour, and then come across this one which was too good to turn away body wise, just needing everything put together as it was only a rolling shell.

This wont be for sale once put on road and yes more than likely on the road before the black five again, well technically the 5 is MOT'd and taxed and insured just dont run right

Managed to sort out with Mike this weekend a lot of parts which are missing, got through a few more clips from renault, so now door locks are held in place and car can now be locked up outside, waiting for boot lock to return from sprayers though, they managed to forget that bit and now need to get more paint mixed up. All the rest of the boot has been put back together, cleaned up the door and boot rubber as well, might give them another clean as once dried still looked a bit white in some spots, so might find some cleaner to get the black back into them. Removed all the interior panels so got a empty car inside apart from the sound deadening at the front of the car, cleaned it all up and removed the rubbish and dirt which somehow gets into the panels each side. Then helped take apart some of a ford consul as thats getting a full body respray and has lots of build up of dirt and rust which aint easy taking it apart. Well not working on the car next weekend but hopefully will be getting the parts in from Mike so last weekend of February will be putting all those in place.

Absolutely gorgeous! Good work.

You still got the black 5?

Bigfoot
13-02-2011, 17:51
Still got the black one. once this is all complete will be giving that a good lot of treatment, new sills and full respray, going to be having the flywheel changed over on there to a volvo one and hoping this might be the reason of the misfire, getting fed up of it not running right, but no heart in getting rid, maybe thats why ive started this one as cant stay away from a 5 for that long, loving doing this work though, especially trying to get it back to totally OE. You dont realise how many clips or brackets you actually loose or remove over the years until you try and put one back together

Been working on bits and pieces, nothing really worthwhile of photos, going to be ordering some POR15 to do the arches since I have removed the front suspension might as well clean it up and protect it all. Dropping the seats off tomorrow to get new bolsters put in and the catch repaired and make them looking like new. Hopefully wont be costing the earth for those. Hopefully tomorrow will be picking up a full refurbished garret t2 turbo and a brand new renault 5 gt turbo tailgate still in box. Not sure if going to use the tailgate yet but will see, turbo will stay unused until I have car running on the old turbo and then will replace once it goes as not sure on condition of this second hand turbo I got on the car already. Waiting for somebody to return part of the hoover which cleans carpets so then I can clean up the boot and car carpet. Have removed all the plastic from the car, need to replace some of it as somehow the two window surrounds have both got cracks and chips out of them :(

Bigfoot
26-04-2011, 20:30
Got all this week to work hard on this car now, have now sourced a nice dash and centre consol plus a lot more items which go in the engine bay along route, didn't realise how many little clips there are :crap: in process of removing all the paint off the air filter box which isn't fun but once all cleaned up will look great plus means a nice place to put the stickers which I got from Sam Fish. Tomorrow will be sorting out the wiring in the dash more than likely change it over to another one I have got. Then install the dash, then rest of interior plastics and carpet then the seats. Then see if the car will fire up first time which could be interesting. Still hoping this will be done for the 1st for the meet but its going to be close really to getting up and running but giving it a good try :)

26-04-2011, 20:34

in process of removing all the paint off the air filter box which isn't fun but once all cleaned up will look great

But will possibly be less efficient. I think the paint Renault put on the GTT airbox was heat reflective. I think Paul B told me this so if I've remembered correctly then it will be true.

I've wrapped mine in 4mm B&Q heat reflective polystyrene panels in the past, lol. It's just thin and bendy enough to work. :wasntme:

27-04-2011, 20:06
Well I did write out loads on here then the site decided to play up and lost the complete post, well main things was I sorted out all my spares and a lot to chuck out

Car had a bad day, hub has totally had it so getting a replacement one from markey mark tomorrow, more parts coming in from renault. Managed to route my starter motor power lead better actually put it in the right route would have helped plus put the accelerator cable in place, not fun with everyone in place :crap: found some more clips and brackets. This is getting stupid with the amount in there, what was renault thinking really.

The wiring loom in the dash is a headache really, need to work out which wires are for which speaker, why did somebody chop off the ends of the wire which tells you where they are located, I have 4 brown wires and 4 orange wires  that dont help me none so ever, thanx whoever that was (Bill or Penfold :sad2:), least it was the better wiring loom out of the three just need to sort out the head unit wiring then. Need to empty the inside of the car, got loads of door rubbers and engine bay rubbers, need to sort out what the best ones are, might order some in from Europa spares if they have the same style, make it look a lot nicer really.

The new Bill J
27-04-2011, 20:17
Serves you right for ripping 'my' car apart :cooter:

One thing I've always refused to touch, is electrics. So it wasn't me that went wire chopping :crap:

I think the only time anyone touched the wiring in the time I had it, was when the alarm/immobiliser was ripped out.

The new Bill J
27-04-2011, 20:18
Opps! I tell a lie :wasntme:

The oe stereo was replaced when I first got it. It wasn't done by me though

Bigfoot
27-04-2011, 20:23
Its going to a good home, unlike that shell :crap: yeah so glad there is no alarm or immobiliser installed on there anymore, will tidy up some of the wires still around the ignition section but all in all its a good set of wires apart from those bullet connectors and no scotch locks which is great :D why do I always find them though with renaults. Well hopefully wont take too long trying to trace the wires but got other things wanting to sort out first really.

TNT Tricky Nicky
27-04-2011, 22:26
have you got the speakers in?

if so you can use a 9v battery to work out which wires go to what speaker, put one of the brown wires on one terminal and try each of the orange on the other and one of the speakers will make a noise, repeat until you have identified all wires

Neak
27-04-2011, 23:29
Outstanding.... :smokin:

Bigfoot
27-04-2011, 23:34
Cheers Nick, might have to give that a try, have the front speakers installed but will take two secs to put a set of rear speakers in just to test, haven't got the standard ones yet but picking them up sunday :D

Thank you Chris, managed to source a gear selector rod now and hubs, wonder what is next to go wrong though :crap: thinking I have replaced nearly everything or taken it apart to check its all good. Joys of starting with a shell only. Im quickily trying to put it all back together now, I know there is a few things im wanting to do like get replacement rubbers ordered in, but its more of getting everything back in place and then working out what needs to be done.

Trevhib
28-04-2011, 10:20
From memory, I think the orange wires are for the fronts and browns for the rear. Let me know when you find out if I've ballsed up :D

Also, I thought that two of each colour had a stripe down them to differentiate between positive and negative? Can't remember which one the stripe denotes.

I'm sure this is captured in a thread somewhere. Probably on the old site though :( Maybe once you've worked it all out you can supply the info to an admin who can put it in the files/articles section? :)

DaveMayGTT
28-04-2011, 11:35
If theres no speakers in the rear i would just check the colour of wires, twist together if bare or put connectors together and continuity check. Will take 1 minute at each point.

Thats what I was going to do, but its matching it up to the original plug on another loom, can get an idea on where the plug goes in the wiring loom to know which goes where in the car but not to radio side :crap:

DaveMayGTT
28-04-2011, 13:05
I was probably lucky at that point because once the wires themselves were labeled by testing them out i plugged all the connectors into the stereo (obviously wires not in one end) but the wiring harness the stereo came with was labelled up so i just had to trace it up the path of connectors if you see what i mean.

Ok, cleared out the car of parts to get ready to install the dash tomorrow, sorted out more of the engine bay, my fault for not having the water feeds on the turbo when it was installed, not the most fun of jobs but managed to get it there, put the pipe work in place, still need to jubilee clip them up, need to buy some of the smaller ones to fit the water feeds, also after a lot of mucking around sorted out the hubs (thank you Markey Mark for bring them over), so two new bearings fitted, just waiting for renault to bring in the bolts for me and roll pin to put that all back together. Hope they are there saturday as forgot to speak to them today to see if they had arrived. Put the rear support bar back in place and put the unbent gear selector bar in.

Have taken pictures and will upload them in a few mins

Well today didn't quite go to plan :crap: managed to plug in the dash just about to connect it up at the back and noticed when putting in the wiper stalk the plastic bracket which it screws into was missing, then had to unplug everything and then start repairing that part of the dash and a couple of other bits, should have taken a better look at it first really. Well Q-Bond is great stuff, stuck the brackets and missing plastic onto the dash and not going anywhere :) Then checked rest of wiring loom and found two plugs which im not sure where they go, one is cable tied to the vent tubing on OS, and the other is a 3 wire plug which is by the same wires as the clock, cigarette lighter and light. Will upload pic of these if anyone can point out what they are supposed to connect up to, have put all the items together whilst its out of the car and cant think of anything which I have missed, more than likely going to kick myself when somebody says what they are though.

Yeah my mind is totally blank there, should have guessed the brake switch.

Got all the wiring for the buttons and the heater controls, so just need to work out where the pic 1 goes. I might check the heater box see if there is any more plugs round there, that one is easy enough to get to afterwards so will put the dash in tomorrow (again ) then will put a battery in place and see if there is any life in the electrics :)

Couldn't lower the back end down yesterday so have got on with some more things, front end now put all together and all aligned up, done last lots of nuts and bolts in the front end, gear selecter connected just need to adjust so all gears to select, connected up rear number plate lights but lights not working, so more than likely related to why the rear wiper not working so will investigate tomorrow, its all ready for the side skirts now after cleaning up the clip section, need to drill out the pop rivets though.

The front wiper isn't parking, so need to work out what relay that is unless somebody knows? sure it doesn't need for MOT.

Exhaust all put in place, just need exhaust clamps to join them up. Need to work out how to turn the dizzy round 180 degrees couldn't work that out but didn't look much into that yet as not essential at the moment. Fingers cross should be all finished and working tomorrow and then just need to raise the back end up tuesday evening then MOT time, nothing quite like a rush to get things done

Well thats just pissed me off, the bloke who done my spraying was sorting out a couple of bits and still had a few of my items left, has decided to just walk off, can still get into the garage but they couldn't find my bits which was needed for the car. So now im down a fuel cap, the rear bumper surround and the side skirt seals and there was a new set for sale on here but guess they have gone. So renault want near on £148 to replace the surround and seal and get a second hand cap and spray that up

Well going to do some investigating and hunt that bloke down to get my money back, I know he is local and on facebook which found, so just need to keep searching and find out more info on the bloke.

Well after the whole thing whats happened today, not happy with how much I might have to pay out but still worked on the car today, got the boot now locking properly with a boot lock in place, not that its sprayed  got the tow eye cap as well, once again not sprayed  but I had to cheer myself up somehow and after the amount of hassle getting this part over from Switzerland, thanx to Turbohead and Clee for finding the bloke I have now installed the radio, not wired it up yet but that will be later, just wanted it in place

Cheers Lomo :)

Loving the small things on this car, shame its not going to be all put together for ND but well on its way for its MOT on friday :)

Raised the back end up to normal height, front is still too high but will have to leave that another day
Brakes are all bled and working
Managing to select all gears now
Turned the dizzy round 180 and fires up again once I put a charger on the car  managed to drain it down with sorting out all the lights all round
Tomorrow night is put everything back together and remove all the tools from the boot ready for friday for MOT :D

Managed to pick up another thing from eBay, genuine brand new ignition barrel and strike pin, the renault keys look so nice and now thinking it looks to good to use :(

Plus person is sold me a set of brand new renault wheel bolts, dont know why im having them because you cant see them under the caps but I know they are there

Thinking I might actually do some work whilst at ND during the day if more needs doing, not decided yet, then again drink and watching cars go round the track will keep me busy plus meeting up the lot of you.

Just got it back yesterday from another company which was sorting out the items which I wasn't happy with from the previous sprayer, they removed the windscreen and found a few problems which wouldn't have helped in a few years time
