Today my 5 threw a fan belt, luckily I had my tool kit in the boot, but what do people carry/recommend in case of breakdown. I don't mean spare bulbs tyres emergency blankets etc, but things that are more car problems.

1 - Spare fan belt (size 1175)
2 - 2 13 mm spanners

Anyone care to add to the list

A jerry can of fuel and lighter:scratch::wasntme:

Seriously;)

I normally carry a

Toolbox(lots of sockets spanners screwdrivers ect ect)
Jack
Axle stand
Spare fan belt
some oil and coolant

Aclutch cable is always and idea so is and accelerator cable

(although i do know someone who drove all the way from wales to stockport using his shoe lace through the drivers side window as a makeshift accelerator cable)

I usually put this little lot behind the front seats in the rear passenger foot well.

My car currently doesnt have a jack, wheel brace or spare wheel... so just an AA recovery card will do.

 To be honest I used to carry enough tools to enable me to do an engine rebuild at the side of the road:eek::laugh:, but after my last breakdown after one of the surrey meet's I just carry the basic's, screw drivers, small selection of spanners, torx allen keys, cable ties and spare alt belt.

Anything major happens I will just call the RAC now and fix it when I get home.:D

This is pretty relevant for me as I'm taking the 5 to the 'ring in may... was wondering what to take:

Oil
Coolant
Gaffer tape
Full set of spanners
Full set of Allen keys
Leatherman
Zip/cable ties
assortment of screwdrivers

Again I would still only just take the basic's make sure your road side assistance will collect you when abroad aswell and job done:agree:

Be very careful when dealing with Roadside rescure in europe... they have small print, and they may refuse to tow you back to England... they may only recover to the cost of a % of the book value of your car....

Dale Jarvis had a few issues with theaa when his 5 broke down over at the ring, I think they will send somebody out to help repair your car... but recovery to the uk.... a different story.

Personally I would join ADAC
http://www.adac.de/mitgliedschaft/adac_membership/default.aspx

There now partnered with TheAA so your also covered in the UK :)

Like Chris said, recovery back to England makes it more interesting, they say that a cost of recovery back from Germany is in the region of £2500 so any car valued less than that they will only tow back to a garage, they didn't even turn up when I called them out, spent 4 hours taking the car apart to get to a damn hose

Dont forget some 1mm thick self amalgamating rubber tape - great for fixing hoses ;)
