I bought my phase 1 a few monhs ago after a 12 year break from owning a R5GTT. It needs some work to bring back to its former glory. If done a few little jobs like, new fuel pump relay and rebuilt the turbo.

I've just sorted my garage out so i'm ready to make a start of resotoring her. she's pearl white at the moment, but she will end up electric blue as its my fav colour and i cant be arsed with the effort in spraying pearl white. Some pics as it stands

Oh a colour change....

Personally love the look of the car, looks very clean and original... unless you have the budget I wouldnt want to respray the car (them stickers on the side will set you back the best part of £500)

Yeah dont colour change it pearl white is a great colour.Unless your going to strip it down and have everything painted (ie engine bay, shuts, boot floor) it just wont look as nice.

Looks a clean standard car in the picture

Its going to be stripped to a bare shell over the coming weeks. It needs a new windscreen surround (hopefully be making a start over the weekend), new drivers door and the paint work isnt very pretty up close. All down the drivers side the paint has bad cracks from a poor attempt of painting!!!

I think the electric blue phase 1 below looks stunning

Yeh mine is the one from clacton, I went down with the trailer to collect it.

The kit will need painting even if i stays pearl white. The white fibreglass is fairly marked, scratched and chipped in places. Oh i'm all confused now with the colour choice:rolleyes:

Alright mike yeah i love mine to bits.Touch wood rust is'nt a issue on it.Only a tiny scab under the o/s/r window which is being done.Guess the fact its only done 67'000 and been dry stored for 7 years helped.

I have a pearl white ph1 and I wish I'd restored instead of tuning it, would be worth alot more now and would get far more attention

trust me fella, either restore it too mint standard pearl white condition or if your really set on a blue ph1 sell it and buy a less rare ph1, like jimmy_b's

can't believe he wants to sell now its finally solid

I feel like the cat that got the cream today, I've removed the front end and side skirts to find NO RUST anywhere, I really am shocked but very happy :):):):):):):):):)

Slightly annoyed that i damaged a couple of fixing lugs on the side skirts, I'll just fabricate some new ones and bond them in place.

Also removed the windscreen panel, fairly straight forward. I havent removed any of the panel on the A-pillar until if preped the replacement. Fingers crossed the wife will give me some more garage time tomorrow.

Nearly got the replacement panel ready to be welded in place, its been a right pain the the ass removing a second hand panel in one piece to use again!!!

I've been offered some new Gaz coilovers at a very good price, dont what to do, fit standard or coilovers?? Kind of leaning towards the coilovers as i want to drop the ride height slighly.

Pace has been a bit slow lately, was hoping to be further along now, but hey! Windscreen surround has been shot blasted and is now all prep'ed and epoxy primered. Finger's crossed i'll get it welded in this week.

Gaz coilovers arrived this morning, nice n new. They have come with 225lb springs, any know if these springs are ok as there has been a lot of talk about spring selection.

Looking good - very solid under all the kit as well, like you say!

Definitely keep it white. Take it from someone who colour changed their own car.. I wish I kept mine red. If I ever get mine re-sprayed again, it will most probably be going back to that colour.

Just thought i'd share a little uni project i'm designing to fit in the GTT. Its a real time incar monitor, it can display a max of 4 channels. At the moment i've written the code to display engine temp, air temp, battery voltage and coolant level warning.

I've got a float sensor to mount in the header tank to monitor coolant level.

The good thing with this is that I can fit any sensor a want and display the reading, although i need to do a calibration and amend the code. next job is to fit and calibrate a pressure sensor to measure boost pressure.

Anyway here are some pics

I've got the board designed and had 2 prototypes made, so all the tooling cost for the PCBs are done.

When i've got the uni project handed in I'll have a look into the possibility for supplying these if there is any interest. I'm fitting one to my wife's MGF as she has had a close shave after dumping her coolant over the M40.

Next is to model a carbon mount facia on CAD, maybe in place of an air vent?

I'm not sure what to do now, I was planning on a complete restoration in one go and its probably going to be off the road for about a year if i go down that route. I've had a 12 year gap in owning a R5 and I really want to drive it this summer.

So I think I may get the bodywork sorted and re-paint it and enjoy driving it this summer. Then maybe do a engine rebuild and powder coat the subframe over the winter.

Hi Rick,
yeh i hope to have mine with some paint on like yours soon! When are you hoping to get yours finished?

I've got a couple of options for painting, my garage, or rent a paint booth for £50. my mate is a painter at the bmw mini plant, so i may even ask him to paint it; but i really would like to do everything myself.

For the the interior i've managed to get hold some black nylon material very simular to the original; so i'm having all the black material replaced and just re-using the centers.

nice idea on the seats, should look well.

Im hoping to get mine on the road next month, had a nightmare last friday, after a full service i decided to take it for a spin down the country lane near my house, ended up stalling it a mile from home, couldnt start it as the battery was dead then i couldnt open the bonnet as i hadnt put the catch back on properly! cut a long story short i had to get towed home, wreck my newly painted bonnet to get it open, so ive had to source another that now needs painting

also waiting on some ats classics to use along side the original wheels. will do a project thread when shes on the road in a few weeks.

if your ok with a spray gun i would do it yourself,
50quid for a booth is a bargain, id snap that up. sadly i dont have access to one anymore so i kitted my garage out with an industial extractor fan and polymask sheeting and a warm day!

i know its classed as a 3 stage pearl but its not like some 3 stage pearls that are bad for colour matching and hard to get an even finish.....
only thing is being a pale colour you need to make sure its clean and free from specs of dust between coats of pearl, as theres not a lot of play if you need to nib the pearl coat! a bloody fly landed in my roof on the second coat of clear and left a tiny brown mark, but even though im a painter im not that anal and will live with it! :D - im sure anyone on detailing world would be slitting there wrists

painting outside a booth its a very time consuming colour, it took me all day to do 4 coats of base, 7 coats of pearl and 2 coats of clear. good luck with it.

kiwicolour
07-05-2011, 00:59
until i thought it was sparkly enough! :D the basecoat is quite creamy, so i was hoping the more coats of white pearl i put over it, it would whiten it a bit. im not so sure it did though. TBH i didnt see much difference after 3 or 4 coats of pearl.

i painted my kit, tailgate, roof and bonnet separatly and the colour match was bang on when i fitted them all back together. the only thing i would definatly stick to if i was you is going down the full side in one hit.

looooooking good! youve got a good finish there, are you a painter or just picking it up as you go along? i cant fault your work anyway! fancy a job :D.

im sure it will be fine but id be a little worried about painting the doors and wings separatly, i did mine in one hit but my garage is a little wider,.
I bet the neighbours love you!

whats the plans with he bumpers, original texture?

Na not a painter, just learnt myself. Yeh ideally would have paint a side in one go but had the door shuts to paint and garage is narrow. Planning to paint door and wing together. I've noted my gun pressure and spray directions, so hopefully should be close match.

Kit and bumpers need to be smoothed as in need to do some repairs.

How's your coming along?

OE pearl was an amazing colour when it was fresh. 10-12 years of being open to the elements later, it was clearly the worst!

Just out of interest, what size compressor are you using. I'm planning on respraying mine when it's finished, but I only have a small compressor. I was going to use a HVLP gun, so it's a bit less demanding CFM wise.

But you've done a great job!

I've got a 5hp petrol engine running my compressor, I think the pump is around 18cfm. The tank is 150ltr. Paint guns are devilbiss gti primer; and devilbiss gti pro with a t1 and t2 aircaps; basically t1 for base and t2 for clear.

I'm pretty sure hvlp require a higher cfm compressor than a standard gun.

Planning to paint door and wing together. I've noted my gun pressure and spray directions, so hopefully should be close match.

How's your coming along?

spot on, slight risk but im sure if youve noted everything down it will be fine.

mines up and running and on the road now. engine and bay still to do but thats a winter project.

how did you get your carb so clean?? did you sand blast it?
also what are you doing about side decals?

Fair play mate it looks stunning, definitely gives my some motivation to get mine finished.
The side decals I've had reproduced and have a set ready to fit.

The carb i degreased, bead blasted, then a hot trike and solvent wash. All brackets were re-plated and given a yellow passivate. I've just just re-plated all my brackets in the engine bay.

i wish i knew how and had the patience to do all that!. I think yours will outshine mine when its finished, i tend to loose interest when it comes to engine and mechanics!

the alloys on mine are 13" JBW starmags with Yokohama tyres with a slight stretch. - i cant remember the exact size without going outside to have a look. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/13x7-Alloy-Wheels-x-4-Starmag-NEW-/140515366929?pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Trims _Car_Rims_ET&hash=item20b75e5811
i had to put 5mm spacers on the back due to the ET-7 offset.

Its been tucked away in the garage since September, uni work has taken over my life!

I've got a few jobs left to complete:

1 paint side skirts, bumpers, gril and bonnet
2 kit the engine up and fit new T25.
3 fit coilovers and lower rear.

I've just taken a new job, so i'll need to complete over the next couple of months to move house. I'll probably pay someone to finish the paint work, as i've not got enough spare time and the garage is too cold to paint.

Yep, I was originally gunna keep the bumpers the off white colour they came in but after seeing the first one painted I decided it needed to be darker so I told the guy and he said he had something that'd do the job, next time I saw the bumpers they were all painted and on the car, I wasn't sure at first but they seem to work ok with the OE pearl white

Engine is now running swet, although i will need to check it on a AFR Gauge to be sure. I drove her down the street yesterday to free the siezed clutch plate:)

It actually looks very 'retro'. I like it! As said, red bumper strips would look really cool. The plastic 'valve' you mention is a restrictor. A far as i remember, the breather system doesn't have an inline NRV.:agree:

Seeing as I now own this car :), I will keep this project thread going & keep you updated.

My list so far is
1) Repaint Bonnet
2) Repaint Fuel Cap Cover
3) Refurbish Alloy wheels
4) Fit Passenger Door Decals

Not to much atm, I have been looking around at a few other Pearl white 5 on here, I have never had one before, I am very tempted to look at getting a ph1 body kit painted either Pearl White or the Matt White to look like the moulded colour....

Penfold aka The Dealer

Not done a huge amount to the car atm, today was the 1st time I have had a chance to wash it...

I will be keeping the body kit black for now...

Today I am off to get some prices to paint the bonnett & fuel cap cover...

The wheels are getting shot blasted & powder coated asap

Here are some pics of it looking clean

Yeh a suprising sale last night.....

Sold for same price i paid (so not like i was out to make money)

Jason (nebstar) paid me for my red 5.... Sadly when he came to collect it, the sodding thing wouldnt start... & has thrown a hissy fit (coil or something up with the electrics)

He jokingly said he would love the ph1 in a txt yesterday... I said come & have alook & we can sort something out... & sure enough we did...

Jason is a top bloke, loves the ph1 & is a much better owner for it than me....

As for me I will try & finish the red 5 & have that as an occassional road car/track car....

Already eyeing up my next car... But thats blue & modern... Not a 5, still a renault :)

Laser tracking -1 done by myself at friends garage, Kent car Kraft on friday. The o/s track rod end was loose :dearme:. Really like the gaz coilovers, i've had both edition avo coilovers and koni's, and the car feels more grounded with the gaz suspension. Had a good look underneath of the car, can say no jacking dents or rust anywhere. Also no new underseal covering anything up, very happy;)!

Replaced all bearings and thrust washers as main shells had worn. Lucky enough crank was ok. All bearings standard size. Oil pump was ok too, which is nice :agree:.
The engine had been one of the bb items and low milage since rebuild. One thing was the dizzy gear was out slightly manage to get it spot on turning it 180 degrees.

Yep, that will be a bell ranger then....lovely things.
Had lessons in a Robinson 22 with dual controls fitted. Great fun, that's the closest you will ever get to being a bumble bee. normally have a piece of red wool taped on the outside of the canopy for direction training..... Hehehe!;)
Wanted to become a heli pilot years ago....... Still like to now really.
Do you get to go out in them?

Lovely car that.

Should do soon as on good terms with the owners over the past few months. £750 pounds an hour for one of the jet engine lesson, but the craft is £330,000 pound and engine builds are a fortune.
