First post!

Hi all,

After buying back my old Black Clio 20v from the big Legend aka Big Steve i thought id pop up a small build thread. The car has gone through allot of changes since i owned it and cost some people many many monies! (in a phonejacker stylie). Lots of bits have improved(mainly by Big Steve's hands) which makes my life easier i guess but there are still things to do that i wanted to do better if i did it again. The main factor would be making the whole Conversion look more OE and less thrown in.

The plan is to remove the Hart n Soul of the old girl and stick it all in a Williams shell. Mainly because that's what ive always wanted but also....well its a williams

This is what it looked like last Saturday.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/FlansS14/L3VOM/IMG_0369.jpg

Then this weekend i picked up the Williams. The bodywork needs TLC but the interior is mint! tbh i could have waited and found a better shell to start with but this is Number 12 so it needed saving (so i keep telling myself)
Few pictures as i picked her up.

Like james said top car, and know Steve has put a lot of work into that car since he has owned it, had the pleasure of driving the car, with James as passenger, and car was great, such a great engine conversion in there. Look forward to seeing how this progresses more.

Welcome along to the RTOC Flan! :niceone: ;)

CHRIST you don't hang about mate?! The engine's already out of the Williams & you're ready to get cracking on dropping the VAG lump in!! Good lad!!

I look forward to seeing what you have planned for the old girl! :D

Good stuff, should be a nice conversion. Speakng to Steve myself today and think I may return to a 5 for a bit in the shape of another vag conversion but using new tsi lump ;-) will do another vx but funds too short for now so cheeky vag and 5 it is. Few changes to original plan but will start with a heathy 375bhp spec and even review 4wd option.

Also looking for some williams bits for wide track if you have spare

Hello All, yer i always wanted to 20v a willimas but did not have the cash at the time. The plan is to build an imaculate 1 but with 290ish bhp (might fit a K04 hybrid)

I did look into the FSI and 4wd (a friend has a KA with full quattro gear) its insane! but allot of work and money (you need a lsd rear diff and controler for the Haldex unit)

As for the old bits. Black Shell, willimas engine, wide track... its all for sale ;) ive put most on Williams Clio but ill chuck it on here also.

Yer Steve dont mess around... Christmas time is gonna be flat out! :D

DG in 4wd, you know you wanna !

Flan, good to see you over here buddy, threads like this are what I like to see :)

I will take my business to another thread to save taking any focus off the great project you are doing but if you could pm me some prices for the williams bits - interested in wishbones, ARB, rear beam, hubs, subframes etc if at the right price

4wd is a mission scoff to get the true quattro to work over the haldex system due to new ECU / sytem requiring the use of the abs and tc also - but as with everything can be done ;) and as you know alway loved the idea of 4wd conversion

So Fsi lump over Tsi it is as the later chain driven tsi lump is wider by a few inches :( and you know its not going to fit with the slightly wider 6 gearbox than we used before

So again tsi with a choice smaller 6 speed box and oe management with some mods should still be fine even if I would rather use the tsi lump (already have in the garage)

Fwd certainly quicker and easier to build and should be ready for ND :)

A sad day for the black one as the engine was pulled out
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/FlansS14/L3VOM/IMG_0435.jpg
But before i did i welded the engine to the sumframe so when i bolt the subframe up in the williams it will be in the right place and make mounts to that ( didnt like the old mounts)
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/FlansS14/L3VOM/IMG_0432.jpg
Few pics of how tight the engine is in the bay, this is the back (not much room for a bigger turbo?

We recently repaired a golf that had gone through 2 driveshafts after someone did there clutch, there gearbox mount was quite away from its correct position resulting in the driveshaft being at a funny angle. Not saying this is your fault but its worth checking :D

watching this project with interest.. id love to have seen a comprehensive project of when the engine first got put in.. it just amazing me the power the vw/audi boys are getting out of these lumps, they just seem rock hard. Maybe you could fancy up then engine mounts a little bit before it goes in the williams, just a lick of paint ?

Just out of interest what you doing with the Black clio shell?

i was gonna put the Black one back to a hybrid but ill probably sell it as a shell if your interested... with 20V mounts if someone wants them (im making all new mounts)

Im hoping the driveshaft was a one off... the setup has lasted 5 years of abuse so one in 5 years will be fine ;) plus the engine is as low as it can be... but ill double check. Ill be making all new engine mounts (to the subframe) so keep an eye out for that... maybe tommorow if im not too hung over :D

spent the last few weekends prepping the engine bay… any suggestion of rust was either cut out or ground back then treated with Gel. I even removed the sealer to redo it.
So… I got my favorite toy out :D
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/FlansS14/L3VOM/Picture041.jpg
Then decided to modify the front cross member for strength but also to help fit bigger ends onto the intercooler (better flow) and I added some braces.

Then I removed the mount (there is no going back now)

Almost prepped (the orange stuff is the rust remover in action)

Flan

It's easier for me to drop the engine out the bottom with the subframe. Also my engine is only mounted to the subframe not the car.

As for the filter it's actually ok. It's a funny pic, there is more room than appears in that pic. Plus it's got the normal filter on. Ill be changing it for a shorter filter.

whats the clutch m/c from ? I tried a mini m/c in the bulkhead with my new 02M, insufficient volume, then couldn't find a VW m/c with a propper (threaded) resivoir hose fitting - instead they were all plastic with those awfull plastic fittings and metal clip arrangement. In the end I used an old 02J slave cyl as a master cyl, I just bleed it backwards. seems OK but incase I have problems I quite like the look of your setup :)

Flan, for future ref the 0.75 I bought works ace with the 02M in my car. So it should work fine with your 02J/A

For comparision sake it takes about 1.3" of piston travel to fully disengage. I don't know where 0.75 comes from because it's bore was 20mm or over, not 0.75" like I expected. Just aswell because the cylinder will only travel 1.5", compared with the 2" of the old VW one I took out and I was worried there would not be enough volume. Turns out there's just enough :)

Nice one Scoff, yer mine is really Light but works great. Infact the biting piont is high but i have room to adjust it.

The Engine is a BAM from a TT225 but im sure them Cupras run the same lump?

Had it mapped on Wednesday. Up to Emerald for full ECU re-map. all went well except a sticking thremostat but that didnt take long to fix ;)

was tempted to go quattro but ill stick with 2wd (1wd with my diff) and see what happens. Its a stock BAM with 440cc injectors and a VF34 turbo.

This Project has turned from “Just an Engine swap” to “Full Restoration”

I was hoping to just sort the arches, paint the outside then over the winter do all the underneath...ect BUT on closer inspection the sills needed repairing in sections, the jacking points were going and underneath looked a bit tired....

So i decided to bite the bullit and do the lot.

Ive defiantly seen worse on Clio’s The reason the arches are sooo bad is they must have been repaired about 5years back and they just put filler over the rust! Its good in a way as these are all the original panels and the car has never been welded.
2 arches and sills ordered.... gonna be a busy week!!

Poor Ex 20v (Big Steve Dont Look!!!!)… At least parts of the car will live on!
Always handy having a spare… you can see where everything is joined and plated. The black one is good in places but poor in others (check the front corner) it seames no two clio’s are the same!!

Na sorry mate thats all i have. Do you need any info? i was hoping to do this over the winter but if i dont do it now it will never get done....

Finished the Sill off

Repaired the floor
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/FlansS14/L3VOM/Picture232.jpg

Then rubbed down the whole underneath of the car ans treated any rust, followed by 90% Zinc rich primer on any bare metal, then Shultz’d the lot, pic taken after I fitted the tank n fuel line.

PMSL cheeky git!........but there is an element of truth there lol

I dont have that much left tbh
- Make custom seats (foam jobbie)
- Remove exhaust and change angle of downpipe (not happy with how close it is to the chassis
- Finish install of boost controller and mount gauges
- Make new boost hose with T for idle controller & recirc valve
- Strip diff and remove crush washer and replace with solid spacer, also looking to treat the other bits to add some extra strength (poss fit ATB diff)
- After diff work decide on turning the boost up on oe map or get a chip / RR session done
- Some form of solution for air intake if wet
- Finish the bonnet and nose cone
- Spray offensive green
- Stick my stock of stick on real carbon stuff
- Install oil pressure sensor and hopefully temp also

-GET on track and test - dont want Spa in october to be the shake down test (although did that with the vag 5 conversion lol)

DG

So prob a couple of days work and tidy a few smaller things out but just dont have the time spare atm  having a n hr hear and there gets bugger all done

Flan
31-08-2011, 15:57
Its Just v expensive paint i guess :D i think because its Xyralic (Sp) and metalic. Some paints are silly expensive its more that 449 sports blue. IIRC My Blue was £80 per litre +vat. buy the time this project is done i would have spent over £500 on Paint, Laqure, filler, papers, gun pots, thiners, body sealer, primer, waxoil...ect it soon ads up ay.
