View Full Version : Phase 1 1986 Engine piping
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
Guys
I'm trying to put my R5 back to factory spec, but I have a problem as my car's pipes are all connected incorrectly.
Looks like the turbo has water cooling? So not sure if this is correct.
Can someone please post some engine pics, so I can try and follow the pipes. I have the article on the subject, but not sure if this is for a Phase 2.
Thanks
Paul

Hi mate, blue haynes manual shows pipework layout for phase 1, 1.5 and 2 this should give you an idea of what wrong if any.
think its only the very early phase1s that were not water cooled as mine was

Have a look in here, theres afew ph1 engine bay shots. My ph1 also has a water cooled turbo so will be piped up the same as yours should :)
( Note in some of the recent pics i bypassed the turbo water jacket, also i relocated the header tank.....if you go back to some of the earlier pages in the album you should see the o.e setup :))

:agree:
The later Phase 1's had water-cooled turbos, like the Phase 2.

Ok here is my piping...I managed to get an old Haynes manual and it all looks correct.
I need to replace the top hose and get rid of the garden hose extension that would have gone to the air filter, but it does appear correct.

Guys
This is from a Green Haynes manual, my cooling is as per the top right on the second page.

I've scanned in some pages of the 'blue' haynes manual that give a bit more info?

You just need to be methodical. Start at the water pump and ensure it follows to items as listed in ONE of the diagrams.
Hope that helps.
you are missing the rubber strap halfway along the top bost pipe - you can see the pipe is blacker there in the photo. :)
