View Full Version : cambelt boo boo- removing bottom pulley
ok folks.. engine is a 1.9 xud 8v diesel turbo engine from a 306..
engine is out the car and ive been having trouble removing the bottom bolt that holds the pulley on. Air gun had no effect, so i locked the crank and the cam using 8mm bolts.. now i know this was stupid however it was freezing and i didnt think straight.. anyway, i levered on a spanner to remove it, the cambelt slipped on the lower pulley so now its out of time, my question is could it of caused any damage being it was on using a spanner, how if you try to move engine round using a spanner it locks up and will only do about a third of a turn in either direction..
Tomorrow i plan to get hold of a more powerfull impact gun to attempt to remove the bolt, hoping i can just time it all back up and jobs a guddon.

I would check to make sure its not a left hand thread?? If not i guess its belt off and re-time the lot. Doubt anythink would have been damage.
nah been informed its defo a standard thread..

when i done the first of 3 belts on my old 306 i started it at the house
and my impact gun wouldnt move the pulley bolt
after flaffing about with masterbars and foot on the brake i gave up rebuilt it
took it to work and used the 3/4 airgun
copperslip it when refitting then when it comes to the next belt its easy
dont think youll have done any damage to the valve train if turning over
with a spanner unless youve propper forced it
if youve not forced it fit new belt and away you go
its one of the hardiest little engines ive ever owned/worked on

My 450lbft gun struggles on some bottom pulleys, usually fords to be honest, we just had to get a new snap on 1000lGbft gun..... cost a fortune but it paid for itself in 3 jobs we wouldnt of been able to do. Good luck with it, im sure itll be fine just make sure its nowhere near the valves when you gun it.
cheers tony, im almost tempted to try to force it back to slip the cambelt in the other direction to get it back in time and avoid any chance of damaging valves...
its times like this i get fed up with cars :cry:

Thank god you said that.. Ive worked on lots of engines, however this one has managed to rip my hands to shreds and seriously push its look with me, i ended up stripping the front end of the car down to getting it out, cutting the driveshaft in half, snapped hoses, .... and now this.. I thought id just got to old to work on cars at the age of 22 :scared:
you should be ok with it jumpin a few teeth dj,just get a new belt on there and retime the engine.
if you turn the engine over by hand you will feel when the valves meet the pistons so unless u keep forcing it to turn it over then you wont damage the valves.
is the engine out now? if not a good tip to removing a tight bottom pulley bolt is to use a breaker bar against the subframe in the direction the engine turns (clockwise) and flick the ignition key. the starter will be strong enough to crack the bottom pulley off, but do not start the engine. BUT ONLY DO THIS IF ITS 100% TIMED (so no good in the instance as the starter wont stop when the valves hit)
ive worked on a couple of these and there not too bad tbh compaired to alot of other modern cars out there
