View Full Version : c1j top speed?

hi all :)

was just wondering the best way to get a good top end out of the c1j?

my mates tungy seems to top out about 120 and he was awfully disheartened when yesterday a metro went past him  the metro has got one of them vvc engines in though to be fair..

it seems the engine has more to give so my guess is gearbox? do you think the clio 1.8 16v box would give a better top end?

thanks in advance. :)

jb3 out of the 16 valver or clio / diesel gearbox that will give you really long gearing , or jc5 from megane /laguna/ 172 but you will need to check how compatible they are with the gtt speedo cable:)

whats the difference between the jb3 and the standard gt box gearing wise?? how much top end would you gain as im sick of sitting at 60mph at about 3k. (dont like doing long distance revving that much).

GT's are not about top end.if you havent beat it by 80mph odds on your not going to.

jamie, is your mate the dude who brought the bits off me.. If so tell him to drop by, im sure hes only running about 10 psi, we will spend some time on his car and show him what the gtt's really about, or failing that he can come for a blast out in mine..

I had a play with a lad called paceys metro vvc.

I got a Clio 16v ox in the campus at the moment, these are shorter ratio then the standard 5 JB3 box, i get less mph per revs so my engine is reving more at 70mph then it would with a standard gt box in.

If your after top speed then its prob not the way to go, to be honest if the car is capable of reving abit higher than standard it will do more than 120mph on the standard box.

The 172's JC5 is also shorter. The standard GTT's JB3 is about as tall as it gets as far as I know.

yes true, but im not only thinking of top end im thinking of a lower rpm when cruising at either 60 or 70 mph not to mention mpg, atm with 195/50/15's at 60mph my rpm is 3k and at 70mph around 3.5k, just sounds very revvy when you on the motorway and cant be good for wear and tear on the rings ect, also ive found when sitting at 60 mph my engine is deciding whether to boost or not so it jerks as its trying to boost but not if you know what i mean, so by using a longer ratio would hopefully cure the jerking as id be sitting well below boost at 60mph.

My tungy done 130mph on the datron timing gear at brunters on the 2 mile straight, standard engine 1bar boost (144bhp fly).

Ive no idea what spec your mates car is but it must be low on power:D Heavily tuned gtt's pull pretty well at top end, i imagine the van is good for a gen 140 although i have never tried;)

are you going by speedo or satnav as my speedo is way out when doing 70 on speedo its nearer 100:laugh:

my 5 is good for 130mph at 5800ish rpm with R11T box fitted running only a bar of boost :agree:

Mine was on the datron timing gear which i believe uses gps? done it three times back to back in the tungy no probs:D Speedo was saying approx 137, i think the rpm was roughly 6200 it was flat out at that really.

Jays raider done 130 on satnav for about 6 mile on the autobahns, engine at a similar state of tune. Gtt's blowing up at high speeds pah its a myth:laugh:

on a standard box and 16" wheels I got a gps 138mph at 7000rpm
on the r11 box it does a gps 128 at 7000rpm

neither of which I'd ever do again, they are too unstable at high speed

Mines ive had to 120mph on the clocks ....mines running 10psi ..no idea what box im running ...the previous box ive had 130mph on and it was still climbing through the revs(ive no idea what gearbox that was lol)

For top speed jamie ud be best going for a diesel box from a clio 1.9d ...as said tho you will need more than standard boost to get there tho;) ive heard of people getting 150mph on the clocks on these boxes ..yet to see proof tho lol .Assuming this is for track use obviously :).

right, done a lil research,

clio 1.9 d box final drive-3.29 top gear ratio-0.80
r5 gt std box final drive-3.73 top gear ratio-0.76

any boffins out there can you work any sums out with these such as differences at 60mph??

whats the point in racing. the 5 gtt is about 0 to 100mph and how fast it gets there. leve it to the pod and track days and save your car licence.

thats ok then. but like i said the 5gtt was built as a fast sprint car. not a top end car. if you havent beat the car by 80mph then you wont beat it mate. simple as that.:p

jamie_clioGTT
28-11-2010, 16:57
the 5 killed it round our local sprint course also... hmm...

hopefully it will have abit more top end when its cammed? :crap:

thats good mate my 5 running 26psi and its so fast up to 110mph but it top end is only 128mph for that much psi you would think it would have a big top end but its not the case.

jamie_clioGTT

With 22lb of boost i can get my van off the clock quite easily, approx 140 on gps (flat out on track). Its all about selection of parts and setup, loads of boost doesnt necessarily mean a lot? ..

I've seen 136mph from one of my 5's . I was in the slip of a vw golf gti at the time going down hill. I was doing 6700rpm i recon on a standard box and the heat sheild got that hot i had to spray water on it to stop it smoking!! ( private road )

id get a closer ratio box in there, legally u can only do 70mph anyway ;) so if you can get there quicker then ur laughin.

my bros r5 (markeyturbo) used to out accelerate my old corsa (2.0 16v throttle bodies 250bhp) to 100-110 but after that the corsa would leave him for dust lol

Jimmy_GTT
29-11-2010, 07:04
As I know you only have to change the 5th gear (from a Clio 1.8 16V) to get higher top end and lower rev @60.

dare i say it, but you have a lack of power. my gtt on standard gearbox would go off the clock no problem....

I was gonna say something similar as i have seen J's car go off the clock on 15-18psi, 0-100 is pathetic, you can do this in most cars.

It shouldn't be a problem for anybody with a GTT engine and gearbox to get into the 125mph + area. I am not saying it's stable or legal at that speed, but it is easily done.

youngscottie
29-11-2010, 14:51
after years of sports bikes ,cossies and an r32 that gose to the limiter no probs
i can honestly say the 5 in three figures scares the **** out of me

the speedo drops to zero after about 90mph so no idea how fast its gone
but its fast enought for the rear spoiler to fall off

180 on the gsxr no probs 100 in the 5 feels faster than the bike

Brigsy
29-11-2010, 15:08
Every gtt i have driven at good speeds has never felt unstable or scary, unless its a total sh*tbox with knackered suspension or steering its fine:crap:

Tony Walker
29-11-2010, 20:49
Think i'd agree with brigsy, my 5 feels very stable, any play whatsoever in suspension, steering, wheel bearings is going to make any car scary at anything over 60. ever feel like its following tracks in the road and not moving the steering wheel? Then you have a fault somewhere. It should really feel tighter than any modern car.( stability wise on a standard car i cant comment tho sorry)

youngscottie
29-11-2010, 21:42
Seem to have ruffled a few feathers there
My cars pretty straight and true
Perhaps scary not the right term
It feels faster than it actually gong due to the size of the car
Which always puts a smile on my face After five years of ownership

So i hear its possible to access 5th through the gearbox sidecase, is it possible to take 5th from 1.9 d kangoo box or similar and put into a gt box while in sitchue?? i know this would mess the ratio up ect but i rarely use 5th whilst racing on my private road at my private traffic lights:burnrubber:,;), just want a nice economical/kroozing gear.

Mine feels like the most stable one I've had. No wobbles, steering feels good, etc. The red 5 I had before this (the one I brought to ND '09) felt pretty unstable at higher speeds.. think that was down to the crap tyres more than anything!
