Hi everyone, well I am now a year into this and car goes off tomorror for welding on sill and minor other bits that need doing, then its down to good old elbow grease to start rubbing down in preperation for paint, I think I have decided on glacier white ?? (can any one tell me if its paint code 389 and is it 2pac or celluose)
I may keep it tungy if there is a majority vote:laugh:
I have done loads of work on sub assy and everything and I mean everything will be fully refurbed before rebuild, all axles have been powder coated and everything that used to shine has been re=plated inc zinc yellow passivate. I will add photos as it progresses ( I currently have about 300 though) :crap:

All thoughts listened to and appreciated, John.

Thanks for all your help guys, it appears that most of you think that keeping it tungy is the way to go forward?? ( I may have to toss a coin on that one).
If any one has bits and pieces left over or spare and want to sell them I would be interested pls PM me. At the moment i am in need of a good rot free tailgate and various interior trims ie boot carpet, and loads of other stuff:sad2:.
Thanks for looking, I will keep putting photos on.

Hi everyone,
New year update, car is now at a friends house having welding done and new sills etc, I will then have car back and start the rubbing down and proper rust prevention with por 15 +waxoil in all thr hard to reach parts.
Sub assy is going well and just had alloys totally refurbed and they look amazing! pics added soon.
Alot of parts are bubble wrapped and put away in loft ,so I will add loads of photos when they slowly start making their way back onto the car.
I am hoping to get some paint on her in the summer if time and money allow that is.

I have decided to paint the car glacier white 389 paint code, I just love white cars and this will be so mint and OE when done it will look lovely,I am 18 months into this project and haven`t given myself deadlines, but would love to start re-assembly in autumn.

07-02-2011, 21:42
just seen this thread yes 389 is code for glacier white
you can get solid or base coat for this,go for basecoat as this is clearcoated
and will not fade like a solid, and will have a nice finish to it:agree:
ask the bodyshop which shade they do it in as thier is quite a few and you may need to paint little bits in the future

VALE46
14-02-2011, 21:16
Thanks for that important info mate, I know alot of people say keep it tungey grey, but I like white and it will be proper smate when I finish it.

Hello everyone, its been a while since I last posted a thread, the car is entering the final stages of welding and will soon be rubbed down for some fresh paint, I will be stone gaurding the complete underside of the car and wax oiling in all sills/wheel arches etc before re-build.

I will post more photos before and after painting, but here are a few boring ones of the new tailgate I finally found!

PS-does anyone know if you can still get the blanking cap on the front bumper I think its the tow eye cover ??? I have also just received my brand new genuine rear bumper, it was on order for 6 months !! worth waiting for though.

Hi Steve,
I have decided to go for glacier white. I thought long and hard about it and just really fancy a white one.
I have been so busy buying various bits and pieces for the car,but as with any project there are ups and downs. Trouble finding parts etc are becoming very normal!

I am currently deciding on what is the best product for corrosion prevention.

hello everyone, I now have most of the panals painted and I am slowly starting to go through the many boxes of bits I have to locate all the bits to slowly start putting my baby back together.

I have had a new screen front and rear fitted, but as usual with these resto projects finding certain parts is difficult,I find alot of reno dealers are just not bothered/interested to help.

this sunday morning was spent spraying all the inner sills etc with cavity wax ( I went for 3M clear wax) in the end.
I have also cleaned the whole underside of the car and stonechip protected all the inner wheel arches and chassis.

Please leave your comments /advice...:D

Well mainly this week (when the wife lets me) !! I have been working on the freshly painted tailgate,I have fitted the new genuine rear screen and plumbed all wiring and washer tubes back in. I couldn`t but a new rear washer jet,my main dealer said no go, so if anyone knows any different please let me know (part number etc).
I will hopefully be putting the tailgate back on the shell in the next few weeks. In the meantime I wondered if there are any pics of rear badge refurbs, I have painted the GTTURBO badge glacier white. I would like to know who has had success in painting the raised letters red, and if so- what red?? pics would be a great help.

As with any project like this you take one step forward and two steps back! I need new inner window channel seals for the front doors, does anyone know the part numbers??:sad2:

i'm loving this thread, but one bit of criticism, i want to look at all your photos but because they are attached it would take days of opening and closing tabs, would you upload the photos to the likes of photobucket and then link them here as they appear a lot bigger?

I got the seals from renualt main dealer as I found part numbers on a thread on here, but had a mental block -Is there a seal on the inside of the window channel ?? not convinced the seals are right as the the new ones have s slit in the corners and old ones didn`t have this...

Think the hinge covers are off the Campus model.
Carpet can be grey or red depending on what option was picked from the factory when new.
Red does seem to be a more popular choice tho.

Go on Brigsy, sell those door cards, this restoration project is worthy of them!

I have a contact in France I can put you in touch with if you want to get the original seat fabric for a retrim. I had my rear bench top sections and 4* bolsters retrimmed. Cost a fortune (the trimming, not the fabric) but there was no more worries of paper thin material splitting when getting in and out any more!

How about a set of the club's nice orange dial kits to finish off your interior?

think so, all i did was have the block hot washed and it just went straight on with a brush, i was concerned about the brush marks but they went once it went off. I also did my calipers with it i was lazy with those and just cleaned them with a wire brush, took a few coats but again still looks good now.

I assume you mean the hose tails for the inlet maifold ?. If so they are threaded, I got some from Bob a while back. The original ones had an allen key in the center to unscrew them but its a bit of a bugger once they have corroded. Think I did mine in a vice in the end.

What are the reasons for this, is it because there's a constant hot water being passed through it? Would you keep the carb ones in then?

Well for performance reasons why heat the inlet when your trying to keep the charge temps as cool as poss. I would keep the carb base hoses on a road going car if it is to be used regularly in the winter.

the 'old school' scorpion might be a option, there different to the current types. Tail pipe is smaller, 3/3.5inch - and bore of system varies from 2inch to 2 1/4 inch, some claim there was a 2.5inch but never seen one. Sound wise is not silly loud, very quiete normal driving but a nice burble on idle, bit of a roar on throttle.

You say you work in the trade, where do you work out of interest?

Evening all, well gearbox arrived back today after full strip and rebuild, its had quite a bit done inc bearings synchros and input shaft! all the rubbers and seals have been replaced, the rebuild was done by A1 gearboxes St Neots http://www.a1gearboxes.co.uk/

I would recommend them, the only thing I was a bit disappointed in was the cleaning of the casings. The box was in a right state when they got it and it was chemically cleaned twice but still not happy.

I`ve started the long job off cleaning the box up to a standard where I can paint it. I will etch primer it but would love some advice on what paint people have used and adhesion success :crap:

He probably asked the thickness because there's not much on these heads to skim. I believe you can get thicker head gaskets to compensate for the skim as it affects the cylinder capacity. Too much of a skim is a no no.

As the weather has been very kind today, I have de-greased the JB3 gearbox and put a couple of coats of etch primer over it so hopefully ready for the top coats tomorrow.:)

Gearbox all done, just waiting for engine block to come back this week!!
Does anyone know if you can still buy the speed sensor and tdc sensor new??

I purchased a new tdc sensor from CGb as I needed it quick. Could not work out why the original bolts would not fit having positioned it correctly. So out it came again, when I took it out the holes are about a mm too small, had to use a round file to enlarge each hole for the original bolts to fit correctly. Finally it does not mount correctly on the bracket on the bulkhead, the slot on the back is not wide enough to slide over the black clip even though they look identical... All in all not great but new and reliable.

Gearbox looks excellent. I'll be doing the same shortly to mine once it's been reconditioned.

Hi James, Thanks for comments on gearbox. After full rebuild the end casing was bead blasted and painted with RAL905 black, I spent a lot of time rubbing down and cleaning box before using etch primer, top coat was a star silver3 paint.

I have replaced most of the bolts and fitted new gearbox mountings, are you around next week mate? I want to come round and have a look at your car (please)..

Small update, engine bottom end rebuild complete and here`s a few pics of masking up and painting the block. I used a wurth high temp paint then lacquered over it.
Flywheel was lightened/balance and refaced.

I will post more pics of building up,but may marry the block to gearbox then drop it in subframe and bolt head on we in situ? I could do with some help on a strengthening bar which I`ve completely forgotten where it goes? I will post pics soon.

PS- a massive thank you to gttjames, he is a top guy and helped me out this week :)

I had a sunny day to myself today, so put the engine back in, fitted various new bits that have been lying around. New wheel arch liners and splash gaurds etc.

The only issue I have (which I`m trying to forget about) is I can`t remember how to set up the gearlinkage?? I have this JB3 rebuilt recently by A1 gearboxes St Neots, now I`m not saying they have Fu**ed up, but I spent an hour messing about with it and I cannot seem to select all gears!

If someone can offer any detailed help that would be great.

Looks Sexual!! :smokin:

The Gear linkage is a complete R-Sole to reset! I believe the trick is to put the gearbox into 2nd gear and then try to adjust the linkage to replicate that inside the car??

Thanks for comments guys, I have pulled my hair out over this gearlikage issue though, I tried for 3 hours to set it up and no joy! is anyone local to Cambridge?? and give me a hand at all??

The gearbox has been rebuilt so I took it as gospel it would be a case of slotting it in and away we go! the thing that scares me is that with the linkage rod disconnected I can only seem to select 3 gears on the gearbox end selector fork?

Thanks for comments any help would be great :crap:

Looks amazing ,it took me an hour put box in rev ,now move lever in rev pos ,connect rod etc ,the problem I had was the rod on the lever was 180 out and to remove the whole unit and spin round if you look at pictures in neutral the rod leans back towards rear of car that's how you know its correct.

To get box in rev push up then to the left I think its a pain took me an hour but did it in end.

Your car iS amazing

Well a quick update...I`ve sorted the set up of gear linkage (finally) !! what a fiddle hey. had a few hours so started putting bits and bobs on the car, as with any long term project you have good days and bad days!

The only thing I could do with is pictures of the starter motor heat shield brackets etc, I have loads of brackets that I have no idea where they go!

Any help always appreciated.:crap:

This maybe a stupid question, but I`ve received a new engine loom today (pic attached) and I had a quick look at it and it appears to have wiring for starter (large diameter wire) and the smaller wire for starter solenoid.

My question however, does the main battery lead direct from battery piggy back onto the starter live connection as well as the wire on the new engine loom?? HELP
Does anyone have a good picture of the starter wiring in situ????

There is a separate fixed live from the battery to the starter, usually a thick grey cable with a big spade like connecter with one of the corners angled. :agree:

VALE46
10-09-2013, 21:33
So does it go straight on starter motor with the other large wire on new loom?
Also a few more parts turned up today, as I`m really trying to keep the car spot on OE I`ve sourced a few coolant hoses already, I would love any part numbers off anyone who still has them??

Also is it only the bottom hose that has a spring in it?? I ordered 2 just incase!

markg

Bottom rad hose is supposed to have a spring in it to stop it getting squashed and stopping the flow of water. Not sure if that also applies to the GTT as mine never had one which I was quite surprised by as I was only the second owner and car was only around 7 years old. Still I guess some mechanic at some point may have not been bothered to refit it as it would have taken at least another 30 seconds. Do you have the part number for the spring as I may try and fit one also ?.

As for hoses I am sure I have seen some nos on ebay Italy, France or Spain a while back so have a hunt around.

This :agree:

The one on the engine loom goes to the alternator, so you'll have 2 larger cables to the battery. One purely dedicated to the starter (grey) and the main power supply from alternator (red)

Can't remember off hand where the exciter wire for the starter solenoid comes from but I don't think it's part of the new engine loom

Been awhile and had to think about it but I'm sure that's the answer to your question :)

Kris M
11-09-2013, 12:44
On your new engine bay loom, you need to make sure the two wires that go to the top of the alternator ( yellow and purple ) are the correct way round in the plug, a load of new looms from Renault came with the he wrong way round from the factory.

with the plug fitted the PURPLE wire should be closest to the FRONT of the car and yellow at the rear

:)

Goobie

This is the fixed live to the starter. :D Now to really confused you as your going full O.E. :cooter: There actually ment to be a short bracket with a tube gromit on one end that fixes to the back of the block to hold it in place. ;) I'm guessing you proberly don't have this? As normally binned when people renew their starters.

You "should" have a white wire with a female spade end that triggers the starter! I can't seem to find a picture to help show, maybe some one else will or if I can find what I done with my old loom il get a picture for you buddy. :agree:
