HPI checks and whos right?

Ive been looking at a new car, and i was told by the seller (private dealer) that it has been subject to CAT-D STOLEN RECOVERED. this doesnt bother me as such as it would state the car wasnt involved in an accident, but the owner didnt want it back so insurance paided out.

today i HPI'ed the car at work and from that it says it was subject to CAT-D TOTAL LOSS (damaged repairable).

would it be worth calling the DVLA to check there records??

if it is just stolen recovered then its a very good price

total loss is a general term used by insurance companys when they pay out in full on a claim and retain the car

my copy of the hpi says

stolen - not stolen

and list the total loss as damaged repairable.

could this still be only stolen recovered?

being total loss the car should have a vic certficate obtained from vosa before it can be returned to the road.Make sure you have this if you by the car.i think it should be recoeded on the v5 it was total loss on somthing along thoses lines:)

i though all write offs need to be VIC checked?
