Ok here is the new backyard racing project a Honda Civic esi. We are building this car between us all over the winter as a drag car ready for next spring having all chipped cash in to a pot for the build. The car didnt cost a great deal and is rough in places but is perfect for what we want with the correct Z6 D16 engine and gearbox and the right ecu for the hondata.
The car:

wow, huge cavity that screams 'put turbo here'.
I really should have a closer look at my mums civic, it looks like that, and I know it's a 1.6, but that's been the limit of my interest. She must have had it 10 years :D
about time  will ant's pile of bits be used or is he still building his own ?
Rob@Backyardracing

Sorry about the large pics, my photobucket pain in arse...
Anyway, yes ants bits are going on. Still got a far amount of bits to buy yet but with the car between 3 of us it works out great. Well after a night of thrashing the N/A lump around and plenty of booze today we made a start.

Arrrrrrrrrr oh and its going to be a turbo
http://i331.photobucket.com/albums/l463/BackyardRacing_2008/Civic%20project/DSCF0597.jpg
:smokin: loads of room for big fun...
Now the engine starts to come out.........

http://i331.photobucket.com/albums/l463/BackyardRacing_2008/Civic%20project/DSCF0607.jpg
We then ditch all the PAS crap etc...
http://i331.photobucket.com/albums/l463/BackyardRacing_2008/Civic%20project/DSCF0608.jpg
And now the fun part starts................:p
nice to see something different :agree:
can i ask what made you choose the d16 over the b16 lump? im assuming the cost?
am i right in thinking the d16 is non vtec.?
would keep a keen eye on this project as i may be doing the same but with a civic b16a vti. :agree:

What's the blower?
Rob@Backyardracing

raj we went for the d16 as its alot cheaper than the B, may not be as good but still a good motor to start with...
The turbo is t3/t4 same as scoffs i think? kung fuiiiiiii of course ;)

Few more pics here: Suz G16 pistons as found in the 1.6 suzuki vatra 16v which will be fitted, 0.5 oversize so need block work yet also we need to do a few block mods for the rods which are yet to arrive as these will catch the block with them being thicker. The pistons also sit lower in the block so drops the cr for us. Longer rods are available to bring this back but we going for the std length and staying safe for now.
http://i331.photobucket.com/albums/l463/BackyardRacing_2008/Civic%20project/DSCF0600.jpg
Also few bits below ready for the build..
http://i331.photobucket.com/albums/l463/BackyardRacing_2008/Civic%20project/DSCF0601.jpg
As you can see we are starting basic with the basic cast mani. Seems tho that a few guys in states still make decent power with these. We will also be leaving the cam and inlet mani as std. We just want to get the thing running and to cross line at pod before we start to go to town with the thing..
Rob@Backyardracing

the d16 engine is productive too (lots of people seem to ignore it in favour of the b series motors) here is a link to the current record holder with the d16 motor, this is an older vid, he has since gone 9.11@158, this is with 1 cam and no NOS. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YccjIP9Qlsc
now were never going to get near him, however there are others using very similar setups to us (suzuki virara pistons/same turbo etc), running 10.3@139 which is impressive given the budget nature of the car and parts used, and is road legal to boot :)
can i ask what the parts have cost so far.?
Rob@Backyardracing

i like this very much
This is very interesting...........keep the updates flowing.....:burnrubber:
if you thought R5's were fast for no money, these things win hands down, why more people in the UK don't tune them I don't know. watch this space people, this will shift :D
its got me wanting to do one now:)
that and the fact my bro thinks his vti is the best car in the world:rolleyes: he dropping a k20 engine. so maybe ill do something with his b16a?? but as mentioned..costs are an issue. good performance on a budget is what i like:)
rob, can you let us know where your sourcing all your bits from.? :)
it seems a pretty easy conversion,
the only thing that'll have me thinking is as youve mentioned about the rods catching he block! will this be something you'll do yourself or get a engineer shop to machine the block so the rods clear it?
im assuming the block wll have to sent to a machine shop to be bored for the pistons to fit?
really interested in this mate. keep the detailed pics coming :agree:

seems so cheap for big power, theres plenty of civics with that engine going round for peanuts, hmmmm sounds like fun. yeah defo keep the updates flowing
one of my friends is currently doing the same conversion, although in a del sol, Hes tried to do it on the real cheap though, and is struggling, hes looking for a decent place to get it mapped i believe at the moment,, not sure if he was looking at the hondata route or megasquirt., ah well best of look, i dont have much of a clue with jap.

Most of the parts are from states, id have to search for which company is what to where the parts came from, you can buy kits but they are crap and would fall to bits. The block will be bored by an engineer the rest by us. The conversion part is rather easy i guess but setting up is where things may get harder.
Good darts chaps :agree:

raj (or anyone else wanting info) best checking the site www.turbod16.com (http://www.turbod16.com)
thats the owners club, only turbo d16 motors on there and lots of knowledgeable people, and build threads to noisy at, there very similar to this club in that they like trap speeds etc rather than silly dyno quotes, not a bad site.

Glad too see you have got it off the ground should be screamer! I have been doing a lot of digging since speaking to you and Dean at the last event! I Think these will catch on big style once one or two people have had a play! Turbod16 seems to be a good site already had a butchers at that! Also like the way you have gone for the cast manifold, the tubular ebay specials dont seem to be very highly thought of!! What do they go like in N/A form? :smokin:
in n/a form imo there slowwww. they seem flat throughout the rev range
Rob@Backyardracing
28-10-2008, 19:36
Ron, in N/A form its about a match to a clio 16v or felt that at time. Some of the tubular manis are copys and crap so the cast seems a good base to start.

Right chaps small update with few boring pics too. We stripped engine down last week and all looks well with no nasty marks

http://i331.photobucket.com/albums/l463/BackyardRacing_2008/Civic%20project/DSCF0627.jpg
So now all the parts are cleaned up we ready for the next step which is to work out what sort of piston to wall clearance we should run before we ship it over to a machine shop also hoping the bores are cast and not steel, plated with nickel, as i have a feeling that may cost to get a re coat. With the Vitara pistons being NA with a less tapper compared to a turbo (correct me if im wrong) im kinda thinking to keep the ring gaps on the larger size to future proof the engine for big power, heat expansions.. better lose than tight...also need to decided which way to fit the piston arrows as the honda rotates anti-clockwise and the Suz clock. But P2V contact isnt an issue anyway with it going lowcomp so just go with pin offset if any.. Need to do some measuring over next few days..

November 8TH update..
Ok more work done today just with cleaning and stripping down the suspension/ brakes. Firstly took the car for a good steam clean down at deans work then made a start on stripping calipers and cleaning/freeing up. We are also overhauling both the drive shafts so they were stripped down and we going to fit new ball joints and bearings. All a bit boring now and waiting for parts which should be here next week.:)

November 19th
At last the rods have arrived and the ARP2000 bolts :) so notching the block is next on the cards, been holding us back with engine work till they arrived. Over the last week we fitted the new brakes, fitted the new bearings and ball joints and also lowered the car on the front, yet to sort the rear out. Also the drive shafts are now complete and ready to be re-fitted course once the engine is back in.:agree: pic of the a rod below...

Right chaps update... The new clutch arrived last week from states and the engine is allmost fully built back up, also we have all the oil lines needed now for the conversion and just needs a full trial fit. Had the block machined for the over size pistons and went for a P2W clearance of 3.5 thou in the end which should be good for what level of power we want. We then had to notch the block for the rods and the pistons aswell. All seems well tho so far and hoping to get the engine fitted next weekend and fired up over xmas hols. We going to run it NA as it came and run the engine in before swapping manifold etc and management (yet to buy).... :)
Will update soon with pics...
looking forward to pod next year :smokin:

Slight update. Havent done much recently and the cars been running now for a couple weeks and all going well which is good so today we decided to mock the cooler up and decide what to do about pipe runs so we can order more parts this next week to complete this area of the build. For this we stole the cooler from my clio which is the THS004. You may notice that now the turbo is facing the other way round, we did this as we feel the pipe work will be better and the downpipe a cleaner run. We going to run the car with open downpipe we not to fussed about an exhaust.. (yet)

Not a great deal since xmas, we have welded up some rot spots thats about it.. Its all running N/A and engines fine.. We have had a few issues with ordering parts and shipping costs from US but we back on the case to get these parts over to us.. Need to yet get the hondata installed and get some injectors, same again we a bit here and there what to use but prob go for the RC750cc.. I have a feeling the cars first outing will end up being RTOC day at pod... :coffee:
rob did I tell you I found a place that do siemens 865cc injectors for £215 ? low impedance though, I don't know what your ECU can handle.
and also, you have a standalone ecu sat in your garage, what the hell you doing with hondata ? :D

As for ecu feckkkkkkkkkkkkk shut up :wasntme: dont let them know ive got that dame thing sat here, i strictly keep my R5 parts away from the rice cake.. Anyway the hondata we can exchange maps ;) with fello D16 owners over in states.... :D

Ive been holding back raj, we made a downpipe up and cooler up from odd pipes etc and sorted some adaptors for oil feed, and a fuel pump thats about it, cars sat ready to go, just awaiting injectors and ecu. lack of funds are stopping us but end of month parts should be on there way... we going for the 750cc RC injectors anyway.. Its about half days work on car and we on road mapping...:agree:
Rob@Backyardracing
29-03-2009, 21:22
Few pics here, we changed the design on downpipe to go under the car rather than N/S wing so flipped turbo round. This also helps out our boost run and screamer and also oil feeds to route alot better.... Will update once we mapping, cars running with turbo but not on hondata as of yet...

Im unsure mate, the turbo will hold us back firstly, its only a small 44trim, but i know it can trap at 120mph with that unit in place. The pistons+rods+ sleeves etc are good for big hp.... the head and cam will also hold us back but we are planning to change all these over the year if funds let us.... I think we would be very chuffed to trap over 110 on first outing.....
looking good rob :satan: im looking forward to the finished car:)

Bin the wheel trims and can rims black, few turns on coils and looks miles better.. :agree: We going to leave full trim in the car so we can all pile in and drive 170miles to pod and back with drag wheels and 24pk in boot :smokin: the days of the A-frame are over for now..
I cant really tell how fast the car is as 5psi isnt much boost at all so doesnt really haul arse.. should be sorting the ecu out this week and get the 4 bar map sensor, 750s, and yet to make a sidy. running a std exhaust at mo:ashamed:
cheers for the comments guys...
Glad to see this progressing Rob, i think i'll be coming to pod day even if i have to drive my postman pat van :)

Are yes that waste pipe has been changed, cut and re welded, not on them pics so points away and to floor.. we do need a cold feed really as we have a gay £5 mushroom at mo just to get us going with no tangles in turbo.. we have the idea tho of using a second hand headlight and make a duct from this if you get me... unsure tho for road testing yet?
Balls just thought need to make a cocking sidy...:crap: mmmmmmm open downpipe bit to loud for the road... cock new summet was missing.... :(

liking that alot mate, some very neat work going on there and finished to a high standard, looks good...
I'm doing the same kinda thing but in a mk2 clio with a volvo lump, totaly standard 5 door 1.4, gonna keep it stock on out side appart from lowering it, and run some serious horse power under the hood..

always one more job :)
you don't need a massive intake, 4"dia is probably fine for 1000hp, as long as the inlet is in clean air you won't gain by having anything bigger then the pipe behind it (plus a radius). An F1 intake is sized perfectly for the engine behind it.
Rob@Backyardracing
15-04-2009, 22:37
Ye wont be a big silly intake, the idea was to take the glass out a light unit and bulb holder and run a duct pipe from this to turbo with no filter..

Midnight Mapping Part1
Well up and running on the hondata and mapped to 10psi tonight :), it feels pretty good, better than i thought, skipping and bouncing for grip in 2nd.. Hard to compare to a GT, seems like a GT at 18psi maybe? Still got the standard exhaust on yet really need to sort this out aswell...
The software seems friendly to use but yet to sort out the data logging etc but for first outing im pleased... Going to be some late nights coming up... :D

UPDATE
Ok we pretty much ready for Pod rtoc day now. Had a few issues with wrongly sent wastegate springs the other week but we sorted now and back to safe boost levels for the time being. We have managed to map the car up to 22psi and feels good, we keeping revs a tad low so limit is at 7.5k for now and also a tiny bit rich at the top to be safe. We may make a few adjustments on day..... Be good to see what this runs :)
Rob@Backyardracing

Results from first outing.
Firstly im Chuffed to bits with the car, we coved 34 runs in total over the two days with no fails...:) apart from the kung fui turbo..:D
Ok started of with 12.2@116mph for our first run of the day. Managed to improve down to a 11.2@124mph on that day mapping each run.. :agree:
Day two, started the day of alot more agressive with some great 2nd gear burnouts with a good result of pulling a few 1.6 60fts with a 1.68 being the best from the line with stock chasis and suspension...( Top work deano for his first run on big tyres :agree:).... We improved our map slightly more and our best on the day was 11.2@126mph with a 1.7 60ft with the carry pulling 100mph now at the 1/8... we carred on with slightly more turning and smelt a 10second with a cross of 11.16 ET but the good dame boost hose blow and rolled over at 114mph ...
The turbo is pretty much dead... but we have some ideas now in pipe line, also i think our days of mappng on the road are short as the car is :( So more results to come soon........
Thanks to everyone to organise the weekend :agree: Top day....

That was CPL racing with that civic, thats got the record for the FWD, also holds the record for fastest europe time without pizza cutters (wheeli bars) i think????. he was testing a new box out so taking it easier but on a second run his head gasket failed due to head lift he says...

soldier indeed, thats probably the thing that impressed us the most, we did 37 runs in the car over the 2 days, and on 1 run we ran out of fuel and went really lean (we datalog each run) and still the motor held up fine, and with the amount of timing we were running, i couldnt believe we didnt damage it when i looked over the log. gearbox and shafts also really strong, full throttle shifts and 1.6 60ft`s didnt phase it 1 bit, no funny noises, nothing :)
you'll be amazed at what you can get away with on that c/r rob. well done lads :)

I saw that car run yesterday, the K20 lump i'm guessing. It did 136mph across the line from what I remember.
Was chatting to the guys on the TDI stand at the autosport show about the CPL and TDI north Honda's and they were talking about 2.4l, 800+bhp and wheelspin halfway down the strip. I'm not that up on the later K engines but what I have seen (a worked head) was pure sex.
I should also add well done, proper quick, regardless of the outlay:cool:

i hate to say it as my bro is really smarmy when it comes to hondas:mad: but i think he has a point! he has a b16 vti and it goes like a rocket, the fact that the car has never had any fault during the 3yrs hes had it beyond me as he absolutely gives the engine a raping!!
he's going to be doing something big with it pretty soon, possibly a k20 turbo. he thought about a 3.5L v6 (honda legend)Turbo conversion but i swayed him off that as i convinced him it would be sh1te around a track and general ragging around.
im more interested in the d16'T after seeing robs efforts and i can only assume its alot cheaper than the route my bro is going to be taking. :agree:

the stock rods are rather thin, and there are lots of people snapped them, so unlike old wives tales about "blah blah rods only good for xxxhp bull" these rods do actually snap, hence we fitted forged ones to start with, would mind to much killing a rod, but if you then have to skip the block, head, turbo, pistons, its just not worth messing about. the forged rods are $289 = £176. per set. cheap enough for you ;)
whats the plan once you have extracted as much as you can afford from it? :smokin:

JUNE 16TH
Firstly a HUGE THANKS to Eddie at F1 in Bolton for giving us free and unlimited dyno time to help us build our project....... :agree::agree:
Well we just had a few hours play on the dyno with the car, map and setup as it ran at pod also we wanted to try some things out aswell.. We took the car so we can see what torq the car has and where peak power is etc just to give us an idea rather than fact base numbers before we get stuck in on the turbo swap.. Will try get graphs later... peak power was around 6100 and peak power 439bhp fly... Been good as tonight we worked out a few small issues we had..
Also another thanks to Eddie for spending is own time to show us around his gear to use and also showing great interest in our car..... Top guy...:D.

16-06-2009, 22:43
wait till you see the graph, its more of a spike than a graph lol, its pretty poor.
we made peak hp at 6100-6300, and by 7500 we was down to 300hp!
we was changing gear at pod at 8k  prob making 250hp by then lol.
so we would of gone a lot quicker by simply changing sooner, as we was only crossing the line at 7100ish where we still had "reasonable" power. but spent way too long in the lower gears well out of peak hp.

Update 12th July
Ok so last week we final managed to get the car out with the new turbo and mapped just in time for pod this weekend. We started the weekend with a 117mph trap and finished in style !!! our first fail after 63 runs at the pod.. Either the head gasket has gone or head lifted or worst case cracked sleeve, will strip down this week to see. Our final traps of the weekend was 132mph close to 133 i think.. our 330s are down by .1 as expected due to turbo, We did manage our best 60ft of 1.66 which was is good to see and gives us good hope with the unit we have once we dail in LC.
Our BEST ET was set today 10.95 @ 130mph but only with a 1.75 60ft and 4.808 330ft but we cracked the 10s finaly only just tho :)
Also i took my GT down today and was in the show and shine. Its the cars first big trip and i loved every minute of driving it :smokin:...
Good to meet some new peeps and all the FWD HKS lot.. had a really good chat with these lot as we will be seeing alot more of them in time to come as some of you on here may know our future with this car...
Dave Reed
14-07-2009, 12:29
Well done guy's massive achievement for such a short period of racing the car :smokin:
Really hope it isn't, but they do crack liners almost as often as R5's do! Nice engines but fragile blocks.
I know it's old hat but I remember the trouble people had getting road cars into the tens back in the day (80's?) Twin Turbo V8's not making it! Nic Mann's Minor being a very notable exception. How times have changed, a hatchback with an ebay blower cracking it... Great stuff, well done. Until you've been in a car like that you just don't realise how quick it is.

vitaras, custom pistons, very expensive, very exclusive. I'll sort you a set out for a never to be repeated £850 (keep it to yourself)
i knew about the use of the vitara pistons, i wondered whether it related to any other cross over parts. esp as backyard hadnt put it on the end of their entry on that list.

Update on listings, humble performance just ran 10.07@142mph :agree: stock sleeves from memory........
love the thread.
built 1 in a del sol last year.
arrow rods, vitara pistons, arp's, greedy e, manage, external waste gate ect ect still waitin to be mapped tho.
the sound great especialy when they start gateing.
did u have to notch the cradle too?
would seriously recomend sleeving the bores tho.
top work lads :agree::agree::agree:

we still not going for after-market sleeves, were rebuilding it as was, it was simply too much pcp that cracked our sleeve, due to too much ignition timing for the boost we were running (30psi!), it was simply making too much torque for the cyclinder, its the only way the motor would make any power due to it not carrying torque high up in the rev range (stock cam), the car was making somewhere in the region of 450lb ft when the sleeve failed, too much for the hp it made, but thats the stock cam for you.
sounds awsome
i think the americans are using a skunk 2 cam an springs
but bin a while since i even looked at a honda lol

Well thought id post up where we up to with the car and we havnt got very far. Infact we havnt touched it since the last event when we had a fail back in july. We did pull the head off right after the event to find that we did do a sleeve in which destroyed the head and piston and also the blades on our new (kung fui) GT35r.. We havnt stripped the car any further to see if we have damaged a rod.
So basicly we left the car as that but we was still pleased at what results we managed to pull so far with the stock cam and head and TB etc even tho we screwed the engine, we did know that we was pushing the map so much on the day, but if we didnt push it we wouldnt have seen a 10.... :)
In the meantime we have still been much involved on other forums and also with the HKS lot, and hopefully as some of you know we will be in next years HKS drap series and should be able to confirm after this years final once we have a meet with Rick C from pod about the weight discussion..
Now the little progress we have, we have a new car :D(not just an engine) all for £250, we havnt collected it yet but we hoping the shell is cleaner than our sliver one and also its white so maybe a better colour imo, we are going to weight our old car in to gain some cash back in the pot for other spares needed...
Few pics in here of the damage we did back in july:

Rob, thats awesome news...white is definetly the best colour :D :smokin: :agree:
On the other hand, what you guys have achieved is amazing, got a lot of time for you chaps and hope to see you kick some ass in next years events.
Keep it up :agree:

13-09-2009, 21:38
Cheers lad, be nice to see 140mph over line by next summer time maybe....:smokin: still to gain that extra 8mph isnt easy once you get up around that power level..
:agree:
You havnt modified the head or cam yet though, so I'd imagine there would be some gain there.
But like you said to me at Mallory, once you start spending money, where does it stop lol
Rob@Backyardracing
13-09-2009, 22:30
Yeah we changing the cam now on this rebuild and we have a h22 TB to go on but thats it so far.. we going to leave the ports etc and stock manis for now...
Have you got any idea of hp with that combination ?
Also, is the gearbox still coping with all this stick ? :)
Rob@Backyardracing
13-09-2009, 23:08
Im not sure of what HP tbh i guess around 450+, as for the box we ok with stock box aslong as we can keep the torque lower or at 350lb and we ok, much over 370 and we will start to break the tranny.. we are slightly over that at the mo with the old spec and map and turbo but we have a good idea of how we want it to be. We just need the cam so we can rev it some more and also stop peak power dropping of so soon as you know rev x torq = hp..9k rpm would be nice.. have to see yet.. our 60fts are going to get harder to achive in the future unless we start to go bigger on the drags but then we back to straining box and id like to keep the 23" for as long as we can before we go 24.5".. also if we go that big we will need to rev it or look into box ratio as we will be close to dropping of peak power over the trap.... i think we cross at 7k at mo in 4th, cant remember would have to look a logs to be exact.

18th November
Thought id post up a small update of what we have been doing.... yes we just been scratching about really and havnt done much..:ashamed: The car still is stock and just rolls around as it is...
We have come to a decision to move away from the d16 engine sometime next year after spending some time looking at cams and what to do.. So looks like after some research and thinking we going to invest in a B16....
Why the b16 you say and not the b18??? Well simply its cheaper but also we want to drop to the lower stroke (lower than our D) and with the size of the bores of the B block we still could bore out to 1.7-1.8 if we feel like it intime.. With some decent internal work we should be capable to rev to 12,000 rpm with no big dramas and also with the wider ranges of boxs and ratios that fit the B it all helps us to build a faster drag car..
As for the first few rounds of 2010 we will be sticking with the D pretty much as it was this year but will be swaping over from pump gas to Q16 fuel to gain mapping experiance of a such fuel for when we make way for the B. The car wont break any records and will go slower with the extra weight which is going to be added to meet the Regs.
The car is also booked in with Hauser racing for a rull 9.99ET spec cage to be fitted. I was going to tackle this myself but i was worried about the cage not passing scrut etc and the chassis stamp so managed to sort a deal with Hauser racing :agree:
Finaly our new graphics for the car. Well we started a small competition on another forum to design a new logo graphic for our car for a small prize :) after some bad and good attempts by many peeeps we have set on this design and will be made up soon with matching shirts..:smokin:
Well thats us so far roll on 2010, the year of the 10s.......:D

Nice one Rob, I suppose the D16 cams are harder to come by for the power you want eh.... is the stroke on the B that much better then ?

cam, singular ;)
well theres a few options for the D16z6 motor r.e cam choice, some seem to give good results, but at the end of day, its still gonna struggle to go much over 140mph,
and will take loadsss of boost and timing to do it, which will mean high torque, and probably lots of breakages.
now the B16`s are 13mm shorter stroke, which is lot, the b16 is about the shortest stroke car engine around, the geomatry is closer to a bike engine really, which means more revs, less torque, more HP. which should mean less breakages for 1, and less traction problems to overcome which may mean we can stick with the small 23" tyre for longer. also with 2 cams we have more scope for adjustment with the motor (overlap etc), and the B16`s go as fast and faster than the D16`s at half the boost! its just a much more efficent motor, we always knew it was the better motor, but wanted to try the D for the cheapness, and love of the underdog :)
but if we want to be anywhere near winning the championship next year, we need to be aiming high, and quite simply i dont think the D has the potential to take the win, the B certainly has, though it still wont be a walk in the park chasing guy chamberlin`s 150mph type R :(

These b16 series motors you talk of are they of all aluminium construction with liners or just an iron block? What about gearboxes? Are these strong in o.e spec

yeah all alloy block, with pressed in liners/sleeves, not wet fit like a gtt.
gearboxes very very strong, same as the D series, few guys in the states over 160mph traps on stock gearbox! thats well north of 800hp!

So few peeps have asked how the car is doing.. Well i thought id take some pics tonight to show what stage we at. Our first event is mid march so i think its going to a busy couple of months to get this completed, its off for its cage next week and im unable to get down to collect the car till feb:crap:. We yet to refit all the interior, carpets, well front section, dash and get all the leccys back working to meet rules. Yet to build the topend of the engine, port mani for new TB, rebuild head etc. Our new cam ;) has only just been made for the D motor and sat somewhere in USA. I couldnt help but get a cam sorted even tho we plan to go B motor in time... Other jobs that will need doing is fitting and installing the engine, cooler, pipe run, fuel system, engine breather system yet to modifi (we even larger on P2W and gaps). Paint work, graphics, and full dyno sessions from scratch, ( Ive lost every single bit of data and pod runs etc due to laptop fail)..
I'm only asking this as i've only realised the potential myself recently. Have you looked into Holset turbo's?
What are the advantages? I've been seeing and hearing more and more about these. Holset have been around for ever!
They are cheaper, have been shown to work well with low displacement engines and apparently have advanced compressor wheel design.
I'd buy one purely because they are so cheap!

from memory they do more twin scroll and high pressure ratio stuff, no idea how you work out which one you want though.
What are the advantages? I've been seeing and hearing more and more about these. Holset have been around for ever!
I've been reading up alot about them the last few months, although there's so many different types you need to be careful which one you choose. The Skyline boys have been using them for a while now as they've latched onto the fact that HKS and GReddy have been doing them over on turbo kits for the last 10 years. £5k for an 800bhp+ turbo kit and a Holset will do it for a few hundred quid.
Most of the ones i've seen are twin scroll and the compressor wheels are massivley efficient at high boost levels, although if you're after power you'd want at least a 60mm inducer on the compressor wheel on a HX35 frame for anything around a 2.0l sized engine, there's also the older frame sizes H1C/H1E which is exactly the same as the HX35 but has a range of different sized compressor wheels, varying from a 54mm inducer and 58mm. People are rating the 60mm wheel at 600bhp. Obvisously now people have latched onto the idea it's not just a case of buying any old turbo and slapping it onto your car. You will need a custom manifold. Quite a few people have been using them on the SXOC and they're moaing that they're very laggy, although everyone of them is using a 4 into 1 manifold which is a total waste of time as they're not dividing the gas flow to pulse the turbine wheel.
I actually bought one myself as I was quite intrigued by them, although the exhaust housing i've got on mine was colossal. It probably wouldn't have worked on anything smaller than a 3.0l so I sourced a 12cm casing from the States which should arrive next week.
There's another problem with them, there's very little information about them, compressor maps ect. Holset themselves won't even comment on them because they're only in the market for deisel engines. They are genuinely not interested in the modified car market.

Update..
Well 4 weeks to go and things not the way i like. The cam im getting made up by comp isnt done, trouble with the core so am told.. so im playing it safe and just built the motor back up with stock cam, using 75mm ycp vitara pistons (unlike last build with 75.5+rebore) so will rattle like hell but should be fine, really need to sort a larger breather system out tho. Engines back in but not running, still a good amount of small jobs to do.. Need to get car to a weight bridge and poss add some weight too... im going to leave the car pretty much how it was last year for the first two rounds then do a swift head and cam swap + 24.5 tyres and use the rtoc day to map the car...
You will be able to view our points from rounds on here for the peeps interested..

http://i331.photobucket.com/albums/l463/BackyardRacing_2008/028.jpg
Well sort of.. The finger came out this week and pretty much hammed the civic build to get the car ready for first event in two weeks.. I havnt given it a proper road test due to no tax or insurance anymore, just MOT.. Ive managed to get the car going on an old map, needed a few tweeks.. Going to write a good safe base one ready for first days testing at pod. Also i managed to tow the car to a weight bridge today and it comes in at 1000kg with me in it.. so we 39kg short so ill start to add ballast over the week where i can best.. Not to happy about the weight as i really thought it would be over or there about on limit, which means the old silver car was actualy lighter than i thought, so dont expect this car to be fast because it wont, specaily that i havnt tweeked the motor from the old one, and running a safer map plus the extra weight.. :( hay hoo..
Heres some pics, im yet to sort the graphics out, plus be nice to get some skinnys but the BYR account is empty :crap:.... Anyway roll on summer and boost.... :smokin:

Hi Rob,
Did they let you have a weight break for running a tiny engine?
Are you getting excited for this weekend?
Tom
Rob@Backyardracing
16-03-2010, 19:19
They have dropped the weight from 1089 -1039kg, so pleased they did move it a bit, but im currently adding around 50kg in weight to meet that.. :crap: Had the graphics on today, will sort a pic later... :) id like to see the field to be broken up with weight vs CC..

Ok, the car became fully road legal today, so we was able to do some testing tonight as i was worried about leaving the car till weekend and test at pod on the saturday (with poss rain). Only did around 10miles, all seems well, pulled a far bit of timing out and boost back down to 25psi, rev limit 7k wayyy to low with the 35r but wanted to keep it safe to at least run it in a little.. Its a little dirty here and there but we unable log AFR at the moment to sort it nicly.. heres a few pics of the stickers too...

Round 1
Well what a poor weekend but overall came away not to bad in the end. We planned to go for the weekend so am able to at least get some steady testing on saturday and some much needed data logs. I got up at 4am to make the gates for 8.30 and was just hoping the rain would have some breaks in the day as i really didnt want to go in to quilfying without testing, but wasnt to be... It rained off..:crap:
Sunday came, weather was good and was hoping to get 1 run in before quili but wasnt allowed, the car went fine through Scrutineer even with 50kg of gym weights bolted behind the front bumper, wheel archs, and footwell.. :)
So stright in to quili without testing great :crap:... First run wasnt to bad, had a miss fire, and was way to rich. ran 11.8@118mph..
Second run wasnt good, wastegate pipe came off (stupid me), hit boost cut, plus i got disqualified for being under weight by 2kg anyway, must remember to keep my fuel toped up :).
Third run i let the car roll to far in and then over the box with LC/anti lag bouncing away so gave me a red light and another disquali, :ashamed:. I just drove off tho as i was logging and wanted to make sure miss fire had gone, seemed ok.
First elimination was agaisnt Adam/TDI car, this run went ok, wasnt running the boost we wanted tho, ran 11.4@122 and took win. Result more points... Next race was agaist Rich FTO in a semi final so was in for some cash now :D.
But this wasnt going to happen, i discovered a fault which i new would come back to haunt us or caurse damage so i dropped out at that and gave him the by pass.
Hopefully get some jobs sorted for May and 2nd round. :agree:
Just like to say great effert from Ant and Dean that makes the BYR team....

Well 3 weeks to go till PTM show (our 2nd round), made some small progress and got a new head that im yet to lap valves, pressure test etc this week at work. Also we finaly bit the bullet for a billet, the GT35 has seen better days, even made scoff spit is coffee out when i turned with the turbine wheel :scared:  one evening.. So time to move on to a proper built turbo than ebay cheapo ones so been on the blower this week to over the pond and ordered a new unit. Just hope it will turn up intime so i dont have to do a backyard racing Mod to our 35r...:crap:
Cheers to TD Autowerkes for sorting me out and slaping a discount on it for us, looking forward to seeing there car out later this year....

I noticed you were running a roller core on the latest pictures... Have you melted the wheel?
oh, he melted sommat alright
Has Rob got pictures?:D
I see it happen all the time on GReddy turbo's. It's commercial spec wheels, they can't cope with the heat. Although, i've got very little experience with ebay turbo's...
It's a simple reason why:D

Well, the turbo was going ok, i thought it was a roller bearing so ran a restictor, on our run that cracked a sleeve we spat half the sleeve out over the turbine wheel which damaged the blades.. i didnt bother to do much for the first round and just ran it... noticed we had more lag, 7.2k rpm was when we managed to reach full boost, anything before, fook all.. i noticed the turbo started to get more play on the thrust, and the comp wheel just about to score, so i stripped it.. to find it wasnt a Roller bearing and the turbine wheel was really bad also... the whole thing was cock ****.. anyway was unsure what to do for this event if to get new or ebay or rebuild old unit. Couldnt find a match for the bearing as such (maybe you could), im very able to make a whole new bearing at work no probs at all, but im still stuck with a **** wheel.. just thought blow it... buy a new one that im able to run and (with few changes) on the B motor i plan to built later in year...:)

Adam if i get chance over weekend ill take some pics of whats left...
If you can, Rob, show me the bearing housing itself. It looks like a 6 bolt exhaust housing and the oil feed itself gives the impression it's a rollerbearing. I suppose you'll know if it's a journal core though.
If you've had engine parts go, that turbo is scrap, the comp side will be good though, i'd keep that. Unless the comp wheel has hit the comp housing.
... There may be a chance you could re-use the turbine side, but i'd have to see the turbine wheel and there may be some grinding involved:D...
There's more to consider but anything is possible.
Incase you didn't already know, rollerbearings come with the so called ''thrust'' movement from factory, so it's easy to check. The main reason they do is because they don't use a thrust bearing, they rely on the carttridge setup.

Have any of you lot looked at borg warner turbos, they seem to be priced well and are rebuild-able. What is this new turbo you have Rob Precision? I have been having a look at this

Ok few pics for you Adam, not the best... feel free to laugh :D. really hope new unit will arrive for next event...:crap:
I'll be honest, that fooled me for a rollerbearing core. Stick the oil feed design next to a T series and that's pretty much the main difference, oil feed wise, on a roller core.
It's easy to see now that something has gone trough the turbine wheel, especially with the glazing on the ends of the fins (the wheel has hit the outer casing). You did a good job of destroying the thrust bearing too:D
With reference to the grinder before, I think that wheel is too far gone, it'd be far too laggy if you tried to bodge it
Impressive though, I must admit:D

Well if my new turbo doesnt arrive, ill bodge this back to together and run it, i dont have a choice, as long as lasts 3 runs it will do me.. ill need to re drill the oil holes tho i think on that thrust ....
