I'm undecided on what to do, either patch and bodge, or replace the lower half of the panel, or do the full panel and be done with it!!! Obviously cost is an issue, and the panel is a fortune.

Mr Ash, the panel replacement makes more sense. I guess availability and price will make my mind up. Will check today.:agree:

Matt if it helps at all, my campus is probably going to Renault heaven soon, there is not much left of it to be honest, if you can cut one from one car and put on another that may be an option.

I was hoping to pass the shell on for someone to re shell their gt, its a really good shell rather than scrap it or break it, but if no one wants it i might let you cut it apart :scared:

Phil thats a great offer!! I guess i could even just cut the bits out i need and tack them in. This would at least give me the shape i need and minimal filler. :agree:

Like i said above the guy at Reno said mine was the last one listed on Reno UK's site... Thats not to say they aren't available from France? They can usually get them in within a few days.

Brigsys after my subframe to, but i really need a rolling shell to get it winched onto a flat bed to get it away.

If we can come up with a plan for me to get rid of the car and then you two vultures can rip it apart :)

ive done a little research and it seems to be there are 2 things that can happen with these..

either A , they stay mint, always are mint and thats that..

Or B , they are very very rusty / knackered and need replacing..

I presume somewhere a weep hole or similar gets blocked..

with this info i believe it should be possible to cut decent panels off r5s in scrapyards-drill out the spot welds and use them as a replacment panel..

Slight thread hijack but whilst on the subject of windscreen surrounds if anyone is interested I have a complete phase 2 shell in red that has a very good wind screen surround, I just want rid of the shell non rolling though FREE to whom ever wants to collect but you have to take the complete shell, It can be lifted and moved quiet easily now as it is a bare shell:laugh: but will need to be placed on a trailor

I had to almost destroy mine to get it off, the lower section wasnt too bad but the side pillars were a nightmare...

Just spot welded mate, there are two small bonded areas between the inner win and the lower section but nothing to worry about... Its picking up the spot welds thats the tricky bit...

Maybe he's got sick of chasing welds across the footwell of chunks Raider.... Time for a re-shell :cooter:

Ok update. I have had another go with the grinder tonight and its looking beyond repair. Even trying to weld new sections in and shaping it is going to be torturous and not worth the hassle. Im not keen on filling it full of bodge as the rust will inevitably re appear!

My options are minimal. :scared: Any ideas chaps on the possibilty of getting a new panel?? Renault have ran dry although i'm informed Belgium may have some??

Are there any places i could try for a replica panel??

It cant really be done mate as the part needed is spot welded to the inner skin/frame. You will pretty much feck the part needed in splitting it from a car.

id either source a campus surround,go to scrappy an cut that sucker out...or fabricate the metal needed to replace the badly corroded areas, can be done with some time an thought, get some por 15 on the back of it an you wont be worrying about rust again...
weld,grind,sand..blobs of weld, give the old girl a few more yrs of life..

if you got a campus surround take your time an drill out the spots ftw...

Been told today by renault that they can put it on back order, and with enough interest an order would be raised with renault france. Thing is no time could be given and it could be on back order for ever.:disagree:

It appears that the rust seems to only get hold where the seal traps it..

based on this im wondering just how hard it would really be to fabraciate a sort of Z section that would lie on its side. and have it so it goes halfway up the pillars.

Surely then it would be possible to cut the old on out and tac weld a fresh one in, admittidly it wont be as easy as swapping the full section but if you weld it in well ,and take wax oil away there should be no issues with the repair.. Im thinking about popping down to my local jaguar restorers to see what they would charge to do this.

maybe you could use a clio as a donor,im sure parts of the surround could be used and tweaked to fit your bad areas of rot.

Some good advice chaps, some i have already tried.:crap: The problem is the time and effort to fabricate the curved sections at either side of the screen. I knocked up a repair section which took 3 goes as the metal got thin and kept splitting. Once i got it sorted it was then still too far away from having to use quite a bit of filler/fibreglass to get right. This means it could crack (flexing) and it may even begin to rust again.

It's just not worth the rediculous effort. On the plus side, i have managed to get a panel and so the fun begins on drilling the spot welds out of the existing one. :D

sweet no problem bud. I think i may end up taking that route, saves a lot of agro of having to cut one out of a scrapyard.
