Bit of an issue with it idling at the moment, will idle but is a bit rough and dies occasionally and dies when you pull up at a junction when choke is off, so will have a look at it at work tomorrow.

Idle issue sounds like it could be an air leak below the carb, if it's intermittent it could be sticky one way valve, if it's all the time could be a split gasket.

Looks like it hasn't been molested by previous owners so a good base for a project

Yea i think its a leak from the carb base somewhere, sounds like it, when i get a day off ill see if i can trace it.

Cheers guys! It has cost a fair amount of wedge and taken a few years!
Hopefully can get the 5 to somewhere near the same!

Well it idles now, one way valve on the inlet manifold was going two ways! Blocked it off now as was only for breather circuit. I presume you can remove this breather without any problems?
Jobs a goodun!
Also changed the coolant and all the odd coloured vacuum hoses for some new black ones, next job is to fit my spare -31 actuator so it will hold full boost at higher revs.

Should be fine blocked off :agree:

Have a look around the site for the "cup" mods, couple of ways it can be done, tidys up the engine bay as well :scared:

Yea cup mod has been done already, but just replaced what was left with black hoses, looks much better than mix and match hosing!

The mini is a 1380, morspeed ph2 cam, stage 3 head, full rotating assembly lightened and balanced, hif44 carb, k&n filter, 1.5:1 roller rockers, aldon dizzy with aldon electronic ignition.
When it was set up a couple of years ago, it was 81hp at the wheels, so about 100-110hp at the fly. Not bad in a mini!

Fixed the speedo today in the 5, only trouble is that it reads 1/2! Fixed the indicators, just a loose connection!
Gave it a quick t-cut and looks a bit better!

No thats what i wanted to do, either that or a supercharger, but just for a decent gearbox i was looking a 1k! And with a moragage i cant afford it:crap:
I've always wanted a 5 so thought i'd get one insted to forfill my boostage needs :D

I used to have a mini with a metro turbo lump, bought some custom stainless exhaust manifold (can't remember the make) that allowed fitment of a T2 turbo so there was no need for a bulkhead box to be welded in and the gearbox held up fine.

It was the headgaskets which was more of a worry.

:laugh:you should try white cars.when you clean it looks realey nice :cool:but if you dont clean it,it can look very bad:sad2:.the worse bit about it is when you get dirty water staines on it once it has been raining.to add insult when you car goes into the garage and you can just spot some times oil stainsor smudges of oil on the wing of the car as they might of been leaning over on the car:mad::(
this car one of the member on here this is nice looked even better in the flesh:cool:
phase 1 is nice as well :agree:

Have been using the 5 daily for work for the last couple of weeks and has been spot on:smokin:
Thought i'd give it a blast this afternoon round some local lanes and all was good, putting a smile on my face:wasntme:
Pulled up at a set of lights near home and had what looked like smoke coming from the bonnet, bugger!
Got it home to find it was only steam, the pipe from the water pump to inlet manifold had split by the manifold and was spraying water over the exhaust:rolleyes:.
No major problem but means i can't drive it till i can get a new pipe!

Im gonna get a few bits when i get paid next week, few trim bits, hopefully a wideband guage if money allows, also some new hoses, possibly some pipework to fit my spare forge fmic. With the ic and the wideband hopefully i can up the boost a bit:wasntme:

Been buying a few bits here and there when i can afford it, have tidyied up the engine bay a bit, have gone from this:
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/fishey798/5GTT/2071201-8.jpg
to this, the multi colour hoses looked a bit of a mess i thought:
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/fishey798/5GTT/DSC00458.jpg

Still trying to sort out getting the bumper/grill/bonnet painted, that will make a huge difference!

Need a starter motor heatsield and possibly a new starter most importantly at the moment due to the supposidly new starter being fitted without a heatshield before i bought the car!

A couple of rubbish camera phone pics:

Engine bay looks better. A great way to make the boost hose look better, "boot polish and brush". Almost makes them look like new.

re starter motor, try putting a jump lead on one of the bolt heads that hold it to the gearbox and the other straight to the earth on the battery, if it fires up better replace the engine to bulkhead earth. could save you a few pennies as you may not need a new one.

get the impression you know what you're doing around cars so hopefully I'm not insulting your intelligence but if you're not familiar with 5s even the smallest things can look like bigger problems :)

Any advice is good! It starts fine when cold, was just last night after a bit of a spirited drive, I stopped for fuel and starter was dead, not even a click! Pushed is off the forecourt and opened the bonnet and left it for half hour, clicked a couple me times, 5 more mins and it fired up. I guess its due to the heat?!

next time it happens give it a try and it will eliminate earthing issues.

i changed a starter motor because of the same thing, the new one was the same as the old which pee'd me off so bench tested the old one, which was fine so led me to the 20+ year old corroded earth strap.

i always forget rule number one, check the basics first

The starter was brand new, there should be a receipt for it - MarkyMark fitted it for me and it was working fine but then was working occasionally after it had been sat for a while, not sure whether or not that is just a coincidence.

It's been years since it was fitted but I'm sure some people run without the heat shield but maybe I'm mistaken.

Also, in reply to your txt, the speedo cable was a 2nd hand item I bought off here, it was sold as working but again sat around as it wasn't fitted for a long time so wasn't tested on the car for quite a while. I did borrow some working clocks to rule out the clocks as being the the problem. I read that the connector that connects the cables together can be a problem.

Starter ended up being the engine to bulkhead earth! Just as you said tricky! Nice cheap fix, we like things like that! I also added a new starter heatshield to hopefully make it last longer (thanks mike :)).
Been using it all winter without any problems, it proved brilliant in the snow! But it did get into a bit of a state even though i was reguarly cleaning under the arches:
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/fishey798/5GTT/DSC00480.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/fishey798/5GTT/DSC00481.jpg
After putting up with the water leak in the boot, i gave mike a visit and collected a rust free black bootlid which is now fitted and the boot is nice and dry!

At the same time i got a spare wheel cage so i have a spare with the car just in case, just need a proper steel spare as i have a spare alloy under there.

Also got a torsion bar to replace the drivers side one that has a bolt snapped in the threads, meaning i can beat the old one out soon and raise the rear ride hight up a bit.

Other than that the hose from the water pump to the inlet manifold split again while the car was idleing on the driveway the other night causing a large cloud of steam, my own fault really as i should have replaced it when it split before instead of cutting it down! Oops! Got a new one on its way from marky b - Cheers!

Gave it a quick clean today as i had a day off ready for the new hose to be fitted and a much waited for drive! Only drove it last friday but seems ages ago!
