Is it me, or is there a growing trend of people finding it far to easy to break there cars because it needs a lot doing to it?

I mention this because of the article within the club where someone in Sheffield is selling Sparkie ol' 5 and was very quick to start breaking her up. He's not the only one and it has been happening a lot lately. Should we not be looking to encourage the other members to do what they can to keep the 5's, 9's ,11' etc on the road? It seems to be that more often than not that other members sugest breaking it so that they can have the ashtray etc.

Surely this is not the ethic of the club.

Ive said this for ages now mate..

Its all well good thinking.. "the value of mines just got up that little bit" as each one leaves the road , but id still dooner know theres more of them out there.

Unfortunately a lot of these cars are worth more in bits than as a complete car - especially ones that are at the bottom end of the price range and in the current market... One way to look at it is that the ones that die are often used to keep other cars going....

yeh you are right but dont forget when they get broke the majority of the time the shell also gets sold so it has a good chance it will get built up again.

im not so sure that they are worth more in parts though..

Fair enough to a proper breaker who can store the car until every last peice as sold will make money on it however most seem to take a moted car, with rusty sills.

Sell the seats for £100 or so, sell the engine for £150/200.. Sell the bumpers and various arch bits for like £50/70.

and then maybe a few panels for £20./40 ,..

they then weigh it in , and get about £70 for half a car.

Only reason i know this is i looked into it when i was selling my rotton F reg r5.. eventually 2 lads brougth it , knowing it was rotton, knowing it was barely running , but knowing that it still had mot..

This car had a rottom rear 1/4 , rottom floor plan, and over a year and a half on its still on the road somewhere and still moted. :P

Alot of 5's are fcuked, rust, need paint or resprays. No one wants to pay out so break or scrap, can you blame them.. Having a mint 5 costs alot and even then I could pick holes in it..

i do agree to a certain degree that to many are being broken up but if it was not for them how many peoples car's in the club alone would of been scraped due to not being able to afford o.e parts ect.

I agree.. stop breaking them :( there running out!!!!!! :(:(:(

I agree some are to far gone.. but like ive said before..

people now days will pay thousands for a rotton mk1/mk2 escort shell, however im sure there was a time when people were scrapping escorts due to rotton sills etc (small bits of rust). Now days mk1/2 escorts are a super rare sight on the roads, and im sure r5s are heading the same way.

Im sure some r5s are past it and not worth saving, however id say at least 80% of the ones ive seen broke for parts have been easilly saveable..

Im pretty sure r5 engines, hubs, etc will far outlast the shells , and think it will become much harder to find r5 shells soon than it will parts.

After all , look at the price of the average running r5 engine, and then look at the price you will pay for a windscreen surround, or rear 1/4.

a normal 1.1 would be a good doner for a shell, but they get broke if the wipers need replacing..:(

my cars paints pretty shafted, im pumping lots of money into it but not feeling the love to paint it yet.. its alot of money, i dont wanna get bummed by a painter doing a poor job.. its solid tho so maybe 1 more will end up with bodywork like new:smokin:

i dont see many others spending 2k + for a decent job, lets avoid the 1000 myth paint jobs, they dont last and paint over rot.. :(

I know a sprayer who will do a decent prep/paint job for circa 1k in a metalic colour. He will charge more for welding though as it can be a whole world of pain on the r5's. If you were to get your car solid though dave i can pass his details on to you, he pays very little for the unit and therefore passes the savings onto the customer, hence i got my sills doen for less than half of what other bodyshops wanted.

I think he may also be spraying mattyJ's r5 so see how that comes out, my 205 will be going there soon for paint.

thats it tho, they always need welding and people get tucked up.. mine needs little behind the front light, one at the sill join credit card size plate needed, front drivers sill going and the inner looks suspect.. pics on my profile in the tinkering folder..

i think carcrash on here will be doing the welding with me...............watching:p after that i'll carry on with the matt black theme, but i have 2k for paint now, but im just shy about going ahead with it for a few reasons, i wanna run the car in after building and i wont leave it in the rain after paint so i need the garage empty..

a painter near me quoted a grand for a blow over with no other issues, but the cars already had the welding done.. others aren't that solid so i always expect nearer 1500.

your bodywork guys done a cracking job:)

I was going to make a similar analogy earlier with Escort RS Turbos but after looking on pistonheads to see how many are about there was over double the amount when compared to 5's.

Not sure if it is just the popularity of the RS marque but people will pay alot even for a shed RS.

I think alot of retro cars reach that point whereby they don't really fetch alot compared to what they used to but then as their numbers begin to thin the price will gradually creep back up.

agreed that people shouldnt break them up, but the money talks and people will still break them whether we like them to or not

i sold up cause the big freeze ruined the paint on my car, and i knew to have it good again would mean spending aload more money again and by then i couldnt be arsed with it anymore, endless money pits

Iv gotta say i dont really agree, as long as the good solid cars arnt being broken then theres no harm, I think of it this way if no one was braking 5s then the cost of restoring them or even just keeping them running would go up by a huge amount which in turn would make the price of the car go down as no one would bother to buy brand new bits for a 25 year old car, then once the price has gone down and theres less demand for the car them more will be scraped. Dont get me wrong i love my 5 and have had Gt turbos since i was 14 but these cars were built to be driven and will get worn and need parts. just my 2p

Since when am I breaking the car up? I'm hoping someone will take it off my hands complete and save it from the crusher!

I already spoke with Sparkie and he wasn't intrested in having it back, so what do you want me to do with it?

I moted my car yesterday it failed and went for retest today, it was an mot test station that dose taxi's and lgv's.

little probs get cars scraped when owners lose the plot after spending thousands and not having either knoledge or money to look after them

or smipley want all the goodies for some other project or to help a mate, who's car would benifit from any said parts from car being broken.

If i hadnt of under-sealed my car 3 years ago when i got it. It would be rotten now. I have just cleaned and repeated under sealing prosess today.

For mot i had to put switch on fuel pump, the horn on a button, that would be  for some people especilly if they didnt have an mechanic who was intrested.

Antiroll bar bush play my arse but it failed and i had to wait till today for it,

Hand brake fail 9%, i ajusted it and was 12%

arrgh that was my retest And day 2, had wedensday off and had to wait for bush till today  S i had half day off work today trying to sort it all out,

I just dont like having an over tight hand break :( so i have wound it up and will have another day or half day tomorrow to collect my Mot.

I got home tonight and wanted or had vision of enjoying raming it in my garage to smash it up  with my fail sheet in hand

All still solid tho! so when i got it i did sumat right. first job clean and under paint:cool:

I can see the + and minus for this and I wasn't singling out anybody, in fact this does not just stay within the club. I have a friend who is into his classic V8's and with cars that go back to the 50's you can easily see that for the more obscure car (which the 5 is) it is a much harder car to to look after if the numbers go down. I think we are past that day anyway, The 5 will never be a national icon like the mini, the beetle or have a huge following such as Triumph owners which makes it easy to source parts.

My own personal story is that I have only owned 1 GTT which would have easily been on the scrap heap if I didn't have the inclination (or help) from friends. What I do have now is a solid 5 which will see another 20 years that is in relatively good nick (don't need to spend £000000000's for a mint one). I have not spent a fortune, I could have spent less, it is not show standards by far, but I have a solid GTT which will be on the road for many years.

i think if the car is savagely rotton and going to cost the earth to fix then break it.
but if its just got a couple little problems and people cant be bothered to sort it then sell it as a whole :)
