I need some concrete info on a suitable turbo upgrade for a C1j running a standard cam and possibly in the future a Piper 285 if changing the cam would help the cause. Looking for over 200 bhp, car used daily, using for fast road, must spool up to full boost as close to a T2 as possible so no laggy crap etc.

Im after turbo specifications, ie wheels and housing sizes etc and not just a 'tomcat turbo will do'! Has anyone actually had one built to specification to truly suit the C1J or are the turbos all off the shelf / similar to what other cars use?

The reason i ask is i have been in some dreadfull boosting T25's, laggy and lifeless unless really revved hard. Really takes the fun away from driving a 5. Any ideas chaps??:agree:

I always liked the VNT on my old raider, one of those with an external wastegate might be the ticket?

:agree: VNT I have mine set up pretty much perfect now for how I want it on a 285 cam, yes it has taken a lot of fettling to get it right but full boost at 2800rpm and just keeps going. :D Only running 20psi manifold and only has 1psi spike which I think is more than exceptable and I know some peeps whom use the same VNT who have alot bigger spike's.

James, what is the spec of your VNT? Could be the way forward if its not too much hassle to fit and set up??

i doubt youd find one of them. James has only just managed to buy it back:laugh:

True:laugh:

My VNT is a Turbo Developments item, to get exact spec you would need to speak with Adam L. I know the core and the rear housing which is a .64 a/ vnt rear housing of an Audi 2.7 V6 TDI and the compressor housing is a T3 but I am unsure as to what wheels have been used.

So apart from the VNT is the T28 the best turbo to go for? I see it mentioned twice .49 and .63.

Also no mentions of T25's is that an indication of how unsuitable they're or how unpopular?

ive had 2 T28's.. one was rollerbearing. Good turbos for big power, but if had cash and could do it again, id go for a t25 for the road. Else wiv t28 u wont get much fun in 1st gear and is quite laggy for road use. Although i am happy with mine :)

Personally I didnt like my 5 with the T28, but that also had standard cam, was very laggy, but when it kicked it it kicked in hard...

where as my favorite cam/engine was a 285 cam with a T2/T25, a small turbo but great for quick launch, no lag, and when the turbo ran out of puff the cam would take over :)

I want to try the 285 cam with a good T25, would be interesting. :)

What would be the difference in max boost from a T25 & T28? Also at what engine speed would these turbos actually start producing boost?

Anyone had experience with both T25 & T28?

Yes.

The T25 I got from TD spooled well, nowhere near as fast as the T2 but not bad at 20psi manifold, ran it at 24psi for pod (12.78) & it made over 200bhp on the rollers on low comp, I have a T28 now & on a standard cam it's pants, real lag monster, the 4k-6.5k powerband with a standard cam makes interesting driving @ 20psi. I will update here over the next couple of days as I now have the T28 on a better engine ;)

Matt, personally after being in James' car with the VNT on I'd get a VNT if I had the cash, best turbo once set up as you really do get the best of both worlds bud.
Big Jim makes a VNT set up for £900 ready to bolt on but it's yet to be tested (chop chop Phil :cooter:)

i looked into this before , i think ideally the best combo is t25 with a 285 cam and set up correctly, look at quarter mile board bushy has a 285 msm cam with a t25 turbo made by adam l and its got a staggering 11.9 seconds with no nitrous or additives running on 97 ron cij engine, the t28 seem popular but must be laggy compared to a t25, adam l is the man to speak to as he knows his stuff and also markey b knows alot about these engines and been a great help to me, hope this helps

Yeah as Jon says, I bought an MSM engine. I have only just got it up & running today so I can't comment on how well it goes yet, need to do an oil change & check for leaks etc :)

Had a t28 with a .49ar turbine housing with the standard 53.00mm gt2554r turbine wheel. Had the compressor wheel swapped out for a 60.00mm wheel. With standard cam bit of headwork and decent carb it came on boost hard around 3500rpm. Would work a **** load better with a decent cam but I was none the wiser as I did not build the bottom end.

Im running a t28 t3 roller bareing with the 285 fast road cam set up. steel liners carb set up 1.10 ac wiith 1.35 main jet and boost set up for 24psi and i will say this it pulls hard from 3000rpm all the way through the rev rage. ive had t25s vnts and this turbo is by far the best set up i had on the car.
