View Full Version : simple r5 engine bays
ok, over the years ive noticed many renault 5's with simplied engine bays, these often having relocated water circuits, and the oil breathers setup simplied down to 1 or 2 hoses..
I just wondered if folks fancy posting a few pics as at the moment mine is very cluttered and i just feel its an epic mission to sort things when they go wrong.
a good example being marks campus

I like what you did there..............

I like what you did there..............
I just started with the simple things :
Removed Anti-perc fan and wiring
Removed overboost wiring
Removed most of the actuator piping
All unshielded wiring placed in convoluted tubing
All wiring from centre of bulkhead is attached to the bracket on the side of the head
OE water system and breather system seem tidy enough for me :)

If you think the campus is tidy you wait for the volvo 5, i've been working on it now for the past 2 weekends. All will be reveiled when i update the project thread.

The oil breather pot and pipework from back of inlet manifold (plus one-way valve) has all gone. I've simplified it to have the breather straight out the rocker into the catch tank, if i get any probs i'll mod a fitting into the blanking plate on the front of the engine to go to the other catch tank outlet.

was looking at yours yesterday jimmy, really tidy, , again another one of interest, have you also pretty much removed all the oil breathing sid eof things, cant really tell in that pic.

heres a more up to date pic.
ive still got my std breather system, i have a catch tank but feel it would be too much in the engine bay

You can get rid of loads of stuff - run the breather system open, like the cup cars. You may have trouble come MOT time. Lose loads of water pipes too. I didn't run any to the carb or turbo.
ah thats a point, never realised there wasnt any to the carb in most the pics.. I presume its more for cold climates where they suffer carb freeze etc.

The hoses to the carb base didn't really make much difference to running in cold. That was mainly down to my intercooler stuffed in the grill.
just trying to work out exactly what you do to loose all them oil breather hoses, and the oil pot, as surely your left with the pipe it sits on that returns back to the sump
You can run the pipes from rocker cover and sump into a pot. Fuk the rest of the sh1t off.
Can even block the sump off and just run out the rocker. Depends how much your engine wants to breath.

I presume you then also have to block the inlet up at the back.. In my books id prefer less stuff in the bay so i can keep a better eye on what matters:agree::agree:
Cant remember mate - I've had a few...

have you looked in the carb inlet and outlets, most are so corroded its a wonder if any water travels through.... alot of are cars have moved on from daily drivers to weekend and fair weather, mine wont be out in the bitter cold and if i am getting some freeze i'll cardboard the intercooler.. :D

Markey, what have you used to block the sump breather? Also, is that a knock sensor bolted to the head, near the actuator?
I love threads like this, its amazing what different people can do with there engine bay! Krissy M has a really nice empty engine bay!
My bay, needs a litte tidy up and only recently added the oil seperator pot back in situ
fidos got a raider

Getting there still a few more things to change in the engine itself :)

It's an overflow in case the diaphram splits IIRC, it directs fuel away from the hot manifold.
