I was thinking with regards to mot but coppers pulling you as well?
From what I've read online it would seem they are legal providing the car was registered prior to sept 2001.
A quote from mot manual:
On vehicles first registered on or after 1 September 2001, check that the registration plates do not display a honeycomb or similar effect background.
That statement to me says that if registered before said date it is ok?
Just wondered if anyone else has experience with mot's and police

Got plates with honeycomb background, all letters/numbers are standard font slightly 3D if look up closely. Never had any issues with old bill or MOT man. Wouldnt have anything more than that, they are pretty much standard looking, got them off the net so havent got that code on bottom corner but jobsa good'un :D

Looking at the online manual again it would seem you are allowed a slight 3d effect whether it be grey edging or carbon fibre effect.
