Further to these recent threads 1 (http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=17684&highlight=uniroyal) & 2 (http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?p=177500#post177500) regarding the sudden disapperance of Uniroyal 195/55 13 Tyres from all good tyre retailers; I've been on the phone today to a "Very Nice Man" from Uniroyal who has told me that the reason we can't find these tyres at the moment is:

THE MOULD IS BROKE!

He tells me that according to his system their is a note that says that production is due to re-commence soon when the new mould is finished!

His system also tells me that at the moment their is no date to cease production of these tyres (and the fact that they are going to the expense of having another mould produced is a good thing) which means they will probably be selling the tyres for a few years yet! :yeah:

Whilst I was on the phone with him however, I asked him if they would be open to us setting up a group buy for the tyres DIRECT with Uniroyal (or Continental as they are now) which he said it would be something they would discuss with us depending upon how many people would be interested??

So guys.... Who would be interested in a group buy of 195/55 13 Tyres??

Steve, have you thought about asking Michelin to see if they'll dig out the old mould for the MXV's? I know that a few years ago, 'due to popular demand' they started remaking the old TRX's that the 5 Turbo/Turbo 2's wear.

The MXV's are 1,004.7 times better than the Uniroyal's

Quick update for you all...

I've been in touch with both Continental (Uniroyal) and Michelin again.

Continental have told me that they would need for us to be a company and provide accounts & credit references to get an account to then purchase directly. The best option therefore would be for us to go through one of their largest Wholesales's & buy from them direct. I've been in touch with one wholesaler at the moment & had a price of £45 +VAT per tyre which isn't that good considering were trying to purchase 50+?? I'm going to speak to another wholesaler they've given me & see what their price is??

The interesting news though is with Michelin... I've been in touch with a good guy there who has done some research and confirmed that there isn't a classic option for a 195 55 13 and agrees with me that he see's an opportunity here for them to help us out. He needs to speak to the main decision maker on Monday & will then come back to me then?? It'd be interesting if Michelin would be willing to support us?? :D

I'll keep you all posted when I hear.... :niceone:

As for you Rob, I don't think any of this is going to happen mega quickly so if you're tyres are feeling dangerous, please get yourself sorted out & safer sooner rather than later ;)

I would be interested in a set if we can get a good discount. Otherwise Ill hold onto my pennies.

Steve, surely a RTOC member can use their company name as a distributor?
My old man may be interested. We wouldnt be able to place the order without the monies from everyone though. It would be alot of work to organise wouldnt it.
Storage wouldnt be too bad, if it was for only 2 weeks max.

The idea of buying direct is nice.

Good Efforts Steve

I've got some promising news regarding these tyres.

We've just had an online tyre ordering service from continental intstalled at work, so I thought I'd put in the tyre size to see if any info came up about them.

The latest is that there will be 46 uniroyal's available from continental from the 01/12/2010, and a few more available the week after. Once works added there bit on, they come out at £42 + vat.

If everyone's happy with this I could order these up at any point, the sooner the better though, just incase someone else snaps them up before me :)

That's really good news but I hope it doesn't stop the feelers going out about the MXV's which would be more desirable for some. (and me especially :))

thats great stuff jamie, if we snap them up they WILL roll out another batch keeping some on the shelf..

STEVE - if you can't get better anywhere else steve drop jamie a msg and he'll get you in touch with my old manager. this tyre garage is a chain of around 20 in the southeast so not some 1 man band outfit that could turn us over.. you should know the garage steve as you dropped off that engine loom to me there a few years ago:agree:

if this went ahead people could arrange collection from the garage, collect themselves or i could cart some along the m4, surrey meet, ace meet if its on.. theres garages near oxford, farnham, kingston, leatherhead, so some could be collected there i believe..

cheers dave :)

As dave said, people could collect direct from the garage, or could be delivered locally as dave has just kindly volunteered to deliver them (you was on about getting a bigger van anyway)

I'm not too keen on people collecting them from other garages tho, as tyres have been known to go missing whilst being delivered between branches before :scared:. Its better if all the tyres are in one place so I know where they all are instead of being scattered around the company.

Another option is for me to order the tyres in and then the club to buy the tyres and put them the club shop.

It would have to be like the Orange dials, money up front from a good number of members then we purchase.

Are the Michelins more sticky than the Uniroyles?

If we have Michelins, could we ask for a more sticky grade? The OE MXVs were soft but weren't the coupé ones even softer?

The softer ones would be perfect as a winter tyre I reckon :)
Winter specific tyres are softer. A softer compound will generate heat quicker, and grip.

They will last ages in winter use, because a wet/damp surface doesn't scrub the tyres as hard.

I would be a definite for some Michelins! The 'coupe' ones even more definite ;)

"I have checked our system again today and unfortunately production has been put back to January due to low demand for this size.
Again this is not definate and could change.

Appologises for this but the factory have taken the decision to produce other more popular sizes. Unfortunately they cannot produce every size all the time."

I have found a cheaper supplier. I will post details here before the end of the week once I have verified stock and age of stock.

Unfortunately, it turns out the two suppliers I had found both could not provide the tyres when it came to placing an order, so were effectively falsely advertising them.

I had a chat with Continental who distribute Uniroyal in the UK. They said they could not tell me anything other than the fact that it was 'out of production and no confirmed production run planned'.
When I asked if this could be expanded on, the lady said NO. She went on to explain that if I was a trade customer (aka tyre centre), she could tell me more. When pushed, she said that no tyre centres have requested them and therefore no demand from customers, which means no plans to produce them.
(I had in mind the broken mould issue but wanted the latest on this situation, however this was not once mentioned).

She said either I need to set up an account (with a minimum of 12 months prior tyre trading) to place an order for these tyres which they would consider or I need to put a case forward to an existing tyre centre...so pretty much what has already been discovered.

I spoke with Just Tyres, a tyre centre with several outlets and explained the situation. The chap I spoke with was very helpful and enthusiastic. He said he will find out from Continental what kind of order quantities they require to facilitate the production run. I know this is the same end result as others on here have arrived at, but one more asking can't hurt right? Not trying to interfere but am frustrated to think that Continental are of the opinion no one wants these tyres.

If it comes to it, I would like to ask them to sell the mould to Avon, who make various specialist tyres, a little hopeful perhaps!

Will keep this updated as/when I hear back.

Thanks for reading!

OK

Got some feedback from Just Tyres regarding the Uniroyal 195 55 13

They said that Continental WILL produce the tyres and they are still classified as current tyres which is positive, subject to an order of which they claim to have had none to-date.

The only way this is going to work is if we can get enough interest on here to put forward an order and payment to Just Tyres up front. With regards to logistics, they could house the tyres in their central warehouse in Milton Keynes to allow us folk to order them at our local Just Tyres centre for collection or fitting, or they could drop them off at a single address if someone is willing to provide temporary housing and P&P service.

Just Tyres are going to put forward the following scenarios to Continental for consideration and come back to us with pricing.

100 pcs 25 cars
200 pcs 50 cars
400 pcs 100 cars

He said they may consider a smaller run but he would judge that in conversation and will potentially go in at a lower number e.g. 52 pcs

Whilst we await feedback, let me know your thoughts and take a look at Just Tyres tyre centre network (http://www.justtyres.com/fitting-centre-details.php) to see if it might suit your location if we got to the point of placing an order!

I am in no way affiliated with Just Tyres, they were simply the first company I approached with this in mind.

Thanks

I spoke to continental today at work and they told me that they are expecting to manufacture the next batch of uniroyals during week 18 this year, so the first week in may. There wasn't a huge amount on backorder either so by the middle of may they should be readily available. :agree::D

I'd be interested in some Fiat Cinq sporting tyres. They're 165 55 13. The P600 seem to be discontinued and I didn't want to pay £76 for P700. :(

ill see what sizes they have in stock ..then people with 5gtt speedline wheels can then go into fiat dealerships and get tyres :)

If you don't do many miles and mainly for summer use there is a 185 60 13.

Checked with continental about uniroyals last week and they said it would be a 5 week delay from ordering to get tyres. Hope that helps.
