View Full Version : Price for a rebuilt engine?
I'm just curious, if I was too break my car (been toying with this idea for about 8 months now) What sort of price would I be looking at asking for just the engine? Collecter would also have to take it out as I have not time to do it and i'm lazy! It has only done 3000 miles since K-tec rebuilt it, I know that the tuner does not add value to it by the way.

A few reason really, It has been layed up for almost a year and I doubt I will ever bring it out again, I sort of lost heart when some little w**ker tried to steal it, it cost me £300 to get the ignition fixed and the door still needs doing, which I have but I am just not getting the time to finish off the project i started.
Anyway, no one seems to want to buy it (well I got silly offers of £800 and why would I take that??) so I may as well break it, hopefully with the members on here getting the benefits of basically all new parts for a good price.

Its just what the receipt says mate.
Not alot i'd expect, it's dirt cheap to build your own engine. Not to mention the fact your leaving the person who wants it the lumber of taking the engine out themseleves. I'd give you £300 max.

u could get all the new bits for a rebuild for around £400 and that includes piston and liner set
so nothing over £500, anyway ive seen running engines go for under £200

im sure when i priced up a Full engine rebuild [not inc turbo] it came to alot more than that :confused: i get my bits from gsf and ecp.

obviously you dont need to replace absolutley everything but this is what i replace when ever ive bought a 5, and this sort of rebuild is usually done once in a blue moon.

going back a few years now, was chatting to someone from on this forum and we came to a price of £400 or was it £600, cant remember exactly but £600 aint too bad, yes it was with trade discount

you can go on forever of what a full rebuild should include
out of interest from the above list, whats the cheapest anyone has been able to find them parts.?
im wondering how much traders actually save.???

TBH i wouldnt pay more than £400 for a rebuilt engine...
I know of a member who sold a rebuilt engine for £1200 might have been £1500 but it had a fair bit of chrome on it, but even so i wouldnt pay nowhere near that much.
Most people only pay £1000+ for a company to rebuild an engine is cos they dont know how to or want a warrenty (which is worth w*nk)
I forget who it was selling a Torsion Tuning Engine for around £500 it was for a sale along time and i think included pipework etc.
TBH i wouldnt pay more than £400 for a rebuilt engine...

Why would anyone ever need to fit 8 new valves? And for £200?! £50 for 8 valves is more realistic. Unless you're buying Paul Ivy wasted stem back cut type of thing.
£15 for a water pump and about £60 for a Valeo clutch is what I last paid, all though that was at least 4 years ago.
I fitted used pistons in both rebuilds. Measured, checked and passed as good enough.
Used followers and cam. Used oil pump, measured, etc.
Why would you want the crank reground? Lapped maybe, if that.

the price for valves i got from paul b. and yes they dont need replacing most of the time.
I happen to know that just a couple of years ago a set of 8 new valves could be had for £50. Non Renault parts though. Williams valves from Renault were IIRC £400 a set. I have it on good authority that they re not are better than the £50 ones.
Basically, your says it's cost you £1200 and everyone else is saying £400 or so.
Simply, few if any one replaces all the parts on your list. There no need at all to do so.
Even in the case of the last engine, nearly all ruined. So I got good used parts for hardly any money. Honed bores, balance, lapped crank, pistons onto rods. New valve springs, rings, shells, gaskets, good to go.
Holts anti freeze for £5 a gallon from local shop. Mobil 1 for £30ish from Costco.
just had a quick look on the gsf website and all the prices are very close to what i had off them a while back.
i understand what your saying ian, yes you dont have to replace absolutly everything when something goes wrong. i was simply stating what i do when Fully rebuilding an engine.
but as far a the prices go.. i cant find anywhere significantly cheaper :(
