Turbo studs coming loose

After getting back from Mallory last week I gave the car a good clean and a quick mechanical once over, I discovered the turbo studs were coming loose. I tightened them up this morning and took it out for a quick spin only to find they've come loose again :(

Is there any tricks of the trade to stop them coming loose? at the moment I just have the copper nuts on there without any washers. Would spring washers work?

Spring washers & proper locking nuts will do the job.

I think spring washers will just become flat washers once you've got them hot. might be wrong :scratch:

ive always used the type of nut in the link with no washer in place and none have got loose or come off :)

don't use washers ;) I couldn't tell what type of nuts those were in the ebay link but you want some crimped locking types. (obviously not nylocs :D).

The locking is just there to stop them fall off completely isn't it?

The locking is not so intense that it'll prevent backing off if it's already overcome 20 ft lbs or so to move?

If they move, locking or not, it's 'cause they're were not tight enough?

I've no idea how much the clamping the force goes up to when a 20 ft lb torqued nut on a turbo stud gets to 500°C or whatever.

I (did) still use the original 5GTT A2 Stainless nuts with the 'helicoil' for a thread which is flattened part way in.

I was told Renault were charging £9 each for them a few years ago.

Maybe the copper ones are too soft to clamp up? Or expand / soften too much when at turbo heat.

For the manifold Paul B got me some Laguna(?) flanged nuts which are 'squeezed' a bit.

Cheers for the quick replies gents, at first I thought it was the studs coming undone and winding out from the manifold and turbine housing however upon closer inspection it is indeed the copper nuts.

I'll be honest I bought them from a local custom exhaust specialist AAS in Newcastle, and honestly expected them to be fine as they do a lot of tuned/high performance cars. They do have the flattend off part so that they do lock but obviously not enough. I suppose I could try adding another nut to each stud and locking them off but TBH the stud closest to the turbo core is awkward at the best of times without trying to add another nut.

I'll do a bit digging around with the info from above and see if I can get it sorted, I suppose whilst the turbos off sorting this out, it could be a good time for an upgrade :devil: now where did I put that credit card so the GF doesn't notice LOL.

Apparanlty you need copper nuts..... Hummmm.

I called renault up for a kit but they wany £100 for 3 LOL i think not...

I'ts probably them little mackam hands not able to do anythinthing up FT. I'll bring me breaker bar round steve and put a bit of 'force' on em!:D

Or for FFT (thats double F in tight) i'll team up with Ashy!:wasntme:

there good yeah?,never used those but would give them a try,always used binx nuts myself,different types work better than others.

worked well for me, never lost or loosened one of these cerated type of nuts on my car :D

Ive allways used washers and galvanised nuts, nothing special just really tight. never had it loosen off. There are ovaled nuts available for manifolds, pain in the arse to undo as there never finger tight lol.

I used to Lockwire them, now I use 'K' nuts with a tiny dab of lock-tight on the threads of the studs in the head.

Thats if the threads are ok in the first place........
