Firstly a huge thank you to Renault UK for allowing me the pleasure of having a drive at Bedford Autodrome in one of their mini hot hatches.....

It was very very wet and slippery after a whole day of rain but undeterred we were all allowed out in Renault's newest baby......thumb's up for that.....we were using the version listed with the cup pack...uprated to 17" rims, suspension mod's...

first thing you notice is just how rev happing the little 1600cc lump is, some trick exhaust and head work and this little baby sings from 4000rpm upto its 7000rpm limit, this is shown nicely by a well placed shift light, COOL....

brakes are fantastic and even in the pouring rain you didnt feel the ABS kicking in every 2 seconds like on some hot hatches......when pushed the ESP system takes it all in hand, sorts it out and gives you loads of feedback before anything nasty happens, NO surprises made this car so much fun in the wet, even with 4 wheel and rear end drifting through 70mph corners it was upset by this and let you play...
great feedback from the steering wheel and as you straighten it up mid corner the rear let's you know if you nearing it's limit....

ESP off and it's whole new car, reminded me off the first Williams I drove.....doesnt have the punch of a 2 litre but the feel of car was spot on....
It's not aimed at the people who can afford a 197 or Megane Turbo but it's a perfect entry level car for the younger generation, they will have a 5GTT following I'm sure with a perky, quirky hot hatch thats as much fun on the road as it's at home on a trackday

so, big thumb's up from me, got the look's,got the character and most of all, IT'S A RENAULT.........

been looking at these and they make me want one:confused: i dont fancy the new clio 197 as its getting fatter, choice would be from the 172/182 or now this. less tax, better mpg? would make me want the twingo over the 2000cc cliosports........mental:smokin:

insurance group 8E.....low tax bracket, high MPG for a sporty little number....

less than £12,000 its well worth the money and great fun..

They are saying that Twingo's and C2's are the new 106/saxo/5/clio etc.. So expect them to be heavily done up.

Me.

It's called the 'Stage 1 Twingo Chip' and consists of a bleed valve and group A uprated elastic band to strap the intercooler.

looks tasty from most angles, not sure any bodykit could be made to complement the curves, but i bet some jizz stain will whack a great big ironing board on the back..

bring back delta kits, always good for a laugh:p

I have asked........................so let's see....

Maka

i have a twingo gt turbo 100
the track is something like 60mm wider on the front with the sport version.
I will say the chuffing twingo needs it, as the GT is not exactly a good handling motor.
But saying that its got great performance for 100 horses!!!!

I brought the GT then saw the press release about the sport....buhhh!!!

however the GT does 50mpg and i insurnace group 4...i have bought kebabs on a friday night that cost more than this cars monthly running bill.

Not the Renaultsport. 1.6 N/A. You're thinking of the GT which is a 1.2 Turbo :)

paul b
09-09-2008, 21:42
the GT spec is not bad a little car at all........wheelspin happy too....

But this RenaultSport version really is a cracking little car....

Andrew Cooke
09-09-2008, 21:54
any idea how the cup pack compares to not having it? Any sign of a cracking deal on 'friends and family'?

paul b
09-09-2008, 22:09
only drove a cupped version so I'm not the person to ask...sorry..
but I know you'd love the cup pack....

The old "friends and family" was removed after an unknown dealer took the pi55..1 bad guy stopped it for all...

Andrew Cooke
09-09-2008, 22:16
cup for the track, but what about B roads? I heard mixed reviews about the clio (there were a lot of cups at work...)

paul b
10-09-2008, 09:29
Bedford circuit isn't exactly a full on track....I think the surface was on par with a normal roadsurface....plenty of joins and uneven surfaces...LOL...

It did feel well planted and I did comment to the instructor who was with me that the way the car felt it should be GOOD on the road....not too harshly sprung and the ESP will save the newer drivers from embarassing and expensive accidents...

I'd say on a B-road the ESP maybe kicking in but only if your trying to understeer yourself into a hedge...(as most young kid's do) ...if you straighten up the steering wheel and plant your right foot ( 5GTT Stylee) it pulls itself straight with no drama...

Well from what I understand the 1.6 found in the RS twingo is based on the 1.6 found in the current mini and the new mini copper S is turbo'd so it shouldn't be that difficult

Its just what I've been told, it wouldn't be the first time a manufacture has sold the rights of its engine to another, the 1.6 turbo in the pug 207 GTT thp 180 (or somit, far to many numbers) is the Mini unit

The Cooper S is supercharged i think.

The old copper S is supercharged, the new 1 is turbo'd

paul b
24-09-2008, 10:31
yup, couldnt agree more.....

its a very captive audience and hey, were easy to get on with...

The Boss of RenaultSport, Jeremy Townsend is actually quite gutted he cannot make it there himself , which is nice

be nice to see Renault in the future too....so no abuse eh!!!!!, LOL....unless they rightly deserve it...:laugh::laugh::laugh:

BriC

It should be good to have a Renault presence though, as Mart says. I look forward to seeing the Twingo RS.
