First post!

So i took a gamble and brought the car off my cousin as a non runner, no mot or tax, water mixing with oil project

Spec is pretty much unknown but have found a few things:
Alloy header tank
ktec alloy carb top
mocal oil cooler
alloy degassing camber
ktec bored out turbo elbow
bigger alloy intercooler
samco silicone hoses everywhere
engine rebuilt back in 2006 new pistons+liners, bottom end rebuild
scorpion straight through exhaust system
clifford g5 alarm
Ecotek valve (removed as soon as i saw it)

This is how the car turned up on my door step after being towed,
Carb and turbo had both been removed and put in the footwell :)

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00245.jpg

then i started work on the engine to get the liner seals changed and inspect the rest for damage

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00249.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00242.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00250.jpg

Whilst waiting for parts to turn up from renault i decided to take the front bumper, front archs and side skirts.
Found a few medium size rusted through sections in the drivers outer sill and a small hole in the passenger side outer sill.

So far have cut out the rusted sections and put in new metal and welded it, seam sealed and painted with paint, got to do the rear of the drivers sill as the inner sill needs a bit of welding but need to drop the tank as its too close for my liking

Replaced both front wheel bearings and bottom ball joints as they were knackered

Then my bits from renault turned up :)

new heatshields as mine are missing
new headgasket kit
new rear window square trims as mine are falling apart
new sideskirt clips as most of mine have broke
Metre of brake servo hose as some knob has fitted a ecotek valve in mine
New coolant
Sump painted black by my brother
Also found out the whole car has dynamat everywhere

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/DSC00254.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/DSC00255.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/DSC00256.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/DSC00257.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/DSC00258.jpg

Rebuilt the carb
Dinner trays are good for carb rebuilds  found out some muppet had got the accel pump spring wrong way around so it was sitting on the diaphram and would of split it sooner or later
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00293.jpg

Then i got the engine all back together after cleaning the liner platforms (Drill wire brush attachment and flat screwdriver works wonders) new liner seals fitted, new headgasket

After much internet searching i found out where each samco hose should be
Engine bay now its fully functional but slightly smokey from turbo oil seal
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00301.jpg

Turned him around so i can start work on the back end so took pics of the front end all rust treated and painted black

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00299.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00300.jpg

Bolted the front bumper and pushed the broken grill back in place to look better for the moment
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00302.jpg

Now i got to fix up the back end
drop fuel tank
do small bit of welding on sills
fix the fuel pump and filter on properly
fix a fuel pipe leak
make a new reserve tank strap
raise back end as currently sitting far too low

Got to sort out the interior aswell as its a bit of a mess

Then hopefully get it to work for a mot and i just need to get the turbo rebuilt and the car onto the rolling road for a fueling check and boost increase

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

did a bit of filler and prep work where i had to weld in a new bit of metal on the top of the sill the other day during the week

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/tommypaint.jpg

all primered ready for a rub down and lick of paint :nodyes:

And had a decent amount of progress today :)

Sill has been painted
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00308.jpg

Drivers and passenger rear sections of sill holes has been fixed and strengthened so much its a new jacking point :D
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00310.jpg

Then the front archs, sills, floor pan, boot floor pan basically everywhere under the car has been waxoyl'd super thick

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00309.jpg

My reserve tank strap had rusted away and snapped and i wasnt going to pay £30+ delivery for one
So i went all blue peter on it 8) Mine cost £0 :P

Cut away snapped strap from brackets

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00311.jpg

Cut out length of metal from brothers crash austin mini

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00312.jpg

Clean brackets ready for welding, Spot welded new metal strap to brackets, welding outside in the wind with a gas mig turned out half decent :)

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00313.jpg

Temporary fit on car, bend strap to right place and measure the second bracket and mark where it needs to be welded on to get a nice tight fitting strap

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00314.jpg

Spot weld second bracket onto metal strap and you should have something like this

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00315.jpg

Then it got painted in etch and chassis black paint, and a nice sticky foam strip was cut to length to stop it rubbing through when its all bolted up :)

Then after arseing about with the exhaust to get it a perfect fit, took off the rear bumper started poking some holes and found some rather nice rusty holes to weld up  So glad i brought a new reel of mig wire and gas bottle today

Provisional mot date is beginning of october fingers crossed if i don't go rust hunting again

My little helper making sure i dont grind my fingers again

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0012.jpg

And After

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0017.jpg

Doesn't look like much but we've done a fair bit.

Removed the tailgate as its scrap but kept all the wiring safe.
Removed the rear seats, drivers seat, boot carpet and under back seat carpet.
Removed the show roll cage.
Fixed the rust hole on the rear bumper mount and fuel filler neck mounting.
Fixed the captive nut so the bolt that holds the drivers seat frame to the body so it actaully screws into something and the seat dont flap about .
Hammered off all the renault sound deadening from the boot floor and rear arch sides.

But i got pokey screwdriver happy and found another 2 rust holes

So i've crossed a few things of my to do list but added a few aswell doh! :)

The worst rusty hole less than 1 inch away from the rear seat belt mounting point :D
Some of the weld went **** near to the end as i ran out of gas and the gas regulator packed up :x

This is just the inside part of the panel i've fixed, got to do the part in the wheel arch tonight :)
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0018.jpg

Oh and you can see where i removed some of the sound deadening on the arch and floor

Rear seat backs repainted black
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0023.jpg

Interior going back in

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0027.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0028.jpg

Shopping this morning got some new engine bits
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0029.jpg

Took the rear windows out to change the 3 little rubber bits and well i'll let the pictures do the talking.......
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0032.jpg
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0033.jpg

My newly paint floor is going to get ruined :( even tho it'll be recovered in sound deadening anyways
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0034.jpg

Looks like the welder is coming out again..... surely there cannot be anymore rust after this?

Removed all the scotch lock's and crap solder joints and replaced with heatshrink crimp connectors 8)

ok the brakes wont bleed properly  so i went out and brought a new master cylinder as it only cost £27 and the rear bias valve seems to be working fine
oh and a easy bleed kit as these like to be pressure bled

good news
got a new brake compensator coming for thursday and got some 8mm microbore copper pipe

also my brother brought these home today

before picture of badges with lacquer peeling off and looking rather tired

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00241.jpg

After

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0136.jpg

Simple to do, In person they are great and shiney 8)

My brother has said if people cover the cost of return postage and offer a few beer tokens, he'll do other peoples in his spare time, letters will have to be a brushed style finish but background can be most colours

Fordy
26-02-2011, 23:07
new rear brake compensator valve as i found mine was leaking,
copper fuel lines as my standard steel lines had cracked,
new rubber hose for good measure,
and a load of jubilee clips again for good measure,

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0143.jpg

Compensator went on fine without a problem......But ..... I snapped a bleed nipple in the drivers rear caliper.... DOH! couldn't drill it out double DOH....
So off to the millfield motor factors for a new one for a lovely price of £70 and it came with a new pad carrier aswell :)

But now i have 2 new rear calipers, brakes that bleed properly and actaully stop. Also new fuel lines that don't leak out v-power quicker than it goes in lol

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0144.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0148.jpg

Then I put in some engine flush to help get any water out of the engine/ oil cooler as theoil cooler hoses wont undo without breaking the line and cooler, so its had a flush and new oil fitted after a cheeky road test up and down the road to make sure it stops lol

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0150.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0151.jpg

Then we got bored and a night free from the gf means as much time as we want to play.
So my bro finishes sanding the passenger side down and i got bored.....

Soooo i started ripping the black trim off the bumper, the brother wasn't too pleased as this now means he has alot more sanding and prep work to do muhahahaha

You do realise that those tyres are going to scrub more than likely, when going 15" you really do need 195/45r15

Superb work there, cant wait to see the finish look of it, do like a nice clean white 5, you going to be putting the original decals on?

So off to the millfield motor factors for a new one......

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I Just read this part of your thread & thought "Surely he can't mean THE Magical Milfield Autoparts???"

A quick look of your profile & I see your in Sawtry!!! :niceone:

I'm only in St Neots mate & all my family are in Peterborough :agree::agree::agree:

Nice to see a well sorted 5 is so nearby!!

I'll have to have a mosey on over sometime & have a look in the flesh, and I'll add you to the list for the convoy to National Day!!

I like what your brother has done to your badges & reckon I could be tempted to see what he'd do to mine!?

You're doing a F'ckin awesome job on the car though mate, Great thread, keep it up! ;)

Fordy
27-02-2011, 08:51
as long as the wheels dont scrub the inner archs with half a turn before full lock i'd be happier, tyres wont be lasting long as it'll be abuised on trackdays :smokin:

didnt know about the oil pump tho :crap: oil pressure is fine on the dash when hot, but if the engine does blow it'll be rebuilt/changed for a higher power build :)

big steve,
you wouldnt believe how much millfield have saved my life and wallet when buying new parts, master cylinder £27, the compensator came to £80 and caliper £70, bleed nipples few pennys so a tidy saving from buying online :D

if your badges are the metal ones he can do the same as mine or maybe something fancier but you'd have to ask him. To get them off the car without bending them, use some welding wire to cut it off the car careful of the locating pins on the badge tho

national day and frog of the pod are my plans once the car is finished so i'll defo be going to both and be nice to convoy with someone as i dont know anyone yet

If so you may have problems, it often reacts like buggery, and its so damn thin in them cans it either does nothing orrrr.... it just rubs though when you flat it...

yup only out of a can for the moment to stop anything getting into the filler when it gets driven to the mot, most will be sanded off

brother is going to get some proper filler spray stuff from work that needs a 2mm gun nozzle to spray it

have experienced the reactions before on another cr when painting over halfords paint, needless to say it wasnt pretty when the proper paint went on over the top

Those wheels with 195/45/15 would be fine.

195/45/15 tyres have near as makes no difference the same rolling radius as the original tyre size.

well the new wheels are on and looking sexy also checked for scrubbing as i dont like scrubbers

the rears are 100% fine even with my brother jumping in the boot  :agree:

And the front clear fine when the car is jacked up.
When on the floor, they clear.
The front of the tyre misses the chassis leg fine but the back is kinda close possibly cardboard thickness maybe a touch thicker but for a mot they will be fine.

Down the road with the tyre flexing i recon it may scrub slightly nothing some 10mm spacers and longer bolts cant fix i'm sure

Also fitted some new number plates to make it look good :)

Well log story short,
friday i set off to the mot station and i got possibly half a mile away from my house,
gave it some boost in 2nd gear and didn't watch the boost gauge,
pulled up the a roundabout and cough cough cough yup running on 3 cylinders and smoking worse than ever with no power at all,
So drove it home at 40mph and a ozone killing cloud of smoke behind me.

compression, sparks and fuel all fine.....

So i blew the head gasket or a inlet gasket

Rather than mess about i stripped the engine down and this time going to build it properly rather than in 5 minutes

new turbo, piston rings, oil pump, liner seals, head gasket, head bolts, head skimmed and all the valves relapped in

the head has already had new guides by the looks of things and the valves look new too but it had a bend in the centre when checked with the straight edge so needed skimming

Got the head back from being skimmed today, and i've done the valve lapping

Spare cylinder head is screwed, det marks a plenty, corrosion pitting in the head and 3 or 4 valve seats beyond repair

few pics from the phone when stripping it down again

:agree:

Only planned the campus pump to last untilll after the mot but i didnt even make it to the mot before the engine went pop

And my thinking is a new turbo + a campus pump = bad times so it had to go :agree:

Head is pretty much built up only little bits left to put back on

BUT!

I broke a one way valve on the inlet manifold :(

Took it out to check it works fine and change the copper washer, put it back in and tried tightening it and it wouldnt tighten it just snapped :x

So i need to go over my cousins to get one off his 6 spare inlet manifolds he's got

You don't mess around do you:agree:

Notice you've got a brand spanking new turbo - have you considered an in-line filter in the oil feed?

A lot of others recommend them and it will save any swarf of ****e ruining your fresh turbo.................just a thought!

Good luck with completing it:agree:

I was thinking about an inline filter but with the rubber feed hose is cracking and stuff, i was going to get a braided pipe made when needed

Funds are at a major low so any little extra's will have to wait till next pay day

I just want to drive it for more than 1/2 a mile then i'll be happy :D

Take a look in my profile at the T2 housing i made for bedding engine in. oil feed i just pushed in to the return and put a clip on it. Its worth it for the turbos sake.

Good idea there fella but i dont have a spare t2 housing :crap:

I should think with very regular oil changes in the first 500 miles will be good enough to save the turbo. When the turbo does blow I'll get it rebuilt into a t25/t2 :smokin:

time for the big update

drum roll please ..................

Its alive :D 8) and it runs great, no more smoke, rough idle or milky oil :)

Also word of warning to everyone
when your little bro is turning the engine over to get fuel into the carb and the pressure up and you have the coil pack ht lead off
DO NOT HOLD THE LEAD to stop it arcing off metal

fook me the coil pack packs a punch  both my arms went straight up and kinda flapped about

But i may have a minor leak from the flywheel side half moon sump seal
Or it might be where i split some oil out when the turbo oil feed was off in a bottle to make sure i had oil moving around with the new oil pump. But thats a simple fix which will get done once i've put 50-100ish miles on it and need to change the oil next

Now i'm getting 4 bar oil pressure whilst cranking down to 2.5ish when the fan cuts in 8)

Did get a little video but its nothing special will upload soon

Its now officially mot'd!

Only advisorys was
oil leak from sump (think the flywheel side half moon seal moved when the sump went up)
Antiroll bar bushes cracking
Slight play in steering rack internals

Had to slow the idle speed down and the co was 2.10 :D not to bad considering it was set by ear :)

now to fix an overboost issue and oil leak :D

I am 100% sure Adam, been a while since I have seen or worked on an OE stlye setup

http://www.rtoc.org/boards/album.php?albumid=61&pictureid=3503

You could always do the boost cup mod and let the rear port on the actuator go to air like we did on JRP's 5

Run the cup mod matey :agree:

Loop the 2 outputs on the ktec carb top to each other,
bolt in rear of turbo elbow,
pipe from carb base to front port on actuator,
2nd port on actuator just goes to atmosphere,

new oil return pipe is here so i can remove someones bodge of copper pipe, just need to source some hoses for it as everywhere seems to want £25 each for them http://www.renault5gtturbo.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_surprised.gif

And since its raining and tommy doesnt like the rain

So he is having his sump pan removed and the half moon seals changed in hope to fix the oil leak,
if it dont fix it then it seems its a rear main seal gone.... BAD times http://www.renault5gtturbo.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif

Does anyone know if the top and bottom oil return hoses are the same or different? and what size bore pipe?

1. the bonnet needs that much repair work i have no energy left to do it
2. it doesn't suit the car imo

Still a few trims to fit etc but the most has been done and we can have a rest for a week

BUT its not all good news! Like a true renault 5 it has a new problem.......

Its clutch has decided that with the newly rebuilt engine and all the new power plus a spirited drive home, the clutch didn't like it and started to slip on full throttle after 3k

So new clutch time yay....

Yup thats a hole in the diff and some pretty deep grooves,
The shaft bearings looks fine and theres no pieces floating in the other half of the diff...
On the hunt for a new one might try scrappys tomorrow
If no luck then i'll put it all back in and buy one from renault and do it in situ with the shaft out

So the list of things found wrong:
No roll pin in o/s driveshaft
Rear main oil seal fitted wrong way round causing my oil leak thats gone over the flywheel and clutch
Gearbox n/s diff section has a hole in it and deep grooves

The bro did some cleaning while i removed the gearbox

finished off today

Bailey dump valve removed after finding it was leaking when we was cleaning it

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110501_113033.jpg

Then we found out a knocking noise from the drivers front wheel when pulling it in and out at the top

Found both top mount bolts loose enough to move
Tried undoing one and it snapped
So off with the drivers strut which turns out to be koni adjustables :wasntme: then ground off the captive nut and rewelded a new nut to the bracket
Refitted it and took out the passenger sides and copper greased them up for good measure and jobs a gooden

Then we decided to put the strut brace on since "fingers crossed/touch wood" all the engine work is done

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110501_133203.jpg

We then cleaned up the earths on the front of the car and put the bumper and bonnet back on

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110501_141225.jpg

Took it for a spin up to tesco and treated the car to a full tank of 99 octane, then popped round to halfords for a new clio rear wiper blade and some satin black so we can paint the wiper arms next :)

Feels good being able to give it full throttle in any gear without having to worry of it slipping anymore :agree:

and i love the green box volvo clutch :D ok its a bit grabby but its not really that hard on the pedal, i've driven worse clutchs in the past

Small update

Radio wiring has been fixed after some time with continuity tests and finding lives and earths :D
Radio is a classic kenwood cassette headunit given for free by a friend as i Didn't want anything fancy to stand out like a swore thumb

Also my new grill from renault for a bargain price

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110510_170530.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110510_170538.jpg

Brother will be painting the grill sometime this week for me.
In the meantime he has a Mini A series engine block i need to start building into a turbo block :D

Time to update

Grill painted and fitted on, it finally has a sexy looking face rather than a black hole

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110512_173942.jpg

Then plugged the aem uego on

Majorly lean as boost hits
So ordered a new fpr from renault

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110514_125155.jpg

Which didn't fix it.. DOH! oh well its another shiney part fitted :wasntme:

So onto the lean issue
Tried a few things like accel pump adjustment - no difference
Whilst doing a power run down the road the accelerator cable fell out the linkage  - fixed on roadside
Found a nice major oil leak from the rocker going onto the exhaust making a bit of smoke

So after that i got moody...got home and put the car in the garage (Its favorite place)
Took off the strut brace, rocker cover and carb
Fixed the rocker cover leak

And proceeded to strip down the carb + a good spare on in the garage that hasnt been used for a while

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110514_212248.jpg

And found this little bugger was semi blocked

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110514_212254.jpg

So swapped it out for a good spare, and reset the accel pump with a 5mm drill bit

Then i thought lets go for a bar of boost, so swapped the ac jet for a 1mm and drilled the 2nd stage to a 1.2mm and fitted everything back together.

Just need to get a new fuel filter and bleed the coolant and see what we have tomorrow on the aem... fingers crossed at 10psi it overfuels enough for me to up the boost a little to 14 psi :smokin:

Want a bit more power so thinking either up the boost and tweek the sensor or megajolt it and remap it completely

Should be much better and less of a spike of power when i've changed to a better boost controller rather than the bleed valve i had kicking about and used in a rush :D

Fordy
24-06-2011, 18:56
OK well where do i start since the rolling road

Tappets got really noisy, so aroudn 600 miles on the engine thought a reset tappets and fix the poxy rocker cover leaky fibre washers would be good

So stripped it all down started to adjust and then thinks why is the cylinder 2 rocker shaft bolt moving  grabed the bolt and it pulled straight without any effort

The threads stripped out completely  which i can only think back to when i missed and gear and over rev'd it alot

So i helicoiled and put a new bolt in job done i thought?...... nope turning both cylinder 2 push rods they have a very slightly bend in them :(

So adjusted it up for now and the engine still idles sweet and drives smooth.

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110612_175259.jpg

Forward on a few weeks of the car being garaged up not being drive to today..
The day before i go to modified live at brands hatch....thinking i could get a 20 mins session with the 5

So got to work all good no leaks

Drive home was great, driving it quite quickly on the motorway overtaking and listening to radio 1 loudly... slow down for my slip road

WTF is that noise... sounded like a grrrrrrrrr, so change into 4th and noise gone :scared: change back into 5th and grrrrrrrr

Still got drive in 5th so thought maybe the nut had worked loose

Got home jacked it up f1 pit crew styley

Within 10 mins the cover was off and foudn the problem, it soon came clear that I wont be taking the 5 to brands hatch tomorrow or being able to drive through dartford tunnel on the way home

5th gear nut is tight but 5th gear is missing a few teeth :D look in the cover and found the teeth and some needle rollers from a bearing in there

Also what is this part? as it looks pretty battered

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110624_173307.jpg

it was loose inside this shaft

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110624_173315.jpg

So i need to get a gearbox in for that as a temp fix or swap 5th gear over and hope the rest of the box is fine or find a good refurbed box to put in

Might have an issue
Doner 5th gear's are different sizes, thickness, design and ratio's, to what i have on the car

The doner is jb3 032 and the one in the car is jb3 014, both have the same diff ratios and gear ratios so they should be the same, yet visually there different gears
So did a bit of checking and i think someone has swapped mine over before for maybe a campus gearset at some point as thats the only guess i have as to why they are different and the reason behind me finding bits of needle roller in the casing with the gears

After finding what other bits i need to swap to make it work without grinding the casing it was all put back together with loctite

After finding what other bits i need to swap to make it work without grinding the casing it was all put back together with loctite

i think the bit that you found is the spout for 5th gear lubrication. dont think the 5 has it as standard, its a later box feature. i swapped one on to mine for some extra lube ;) nice to see someone getting stuck in. there fiddly to strip further than 5th.

both my boxes had thems spouts? strange, the bearing casing did look a bit toasted and going crispy around the edges

checked the ratios and altho the new gears have more teeth they are the same ratio of 0.76

I found a good guide on the stripping so i'll probably make a how to thread soon in english unlike the french version i have found

Right been giving him some tweeking over the week while he's been garaged up after a 2 week daily use mission with no problems

Replaced all the blowns dash button bulbs and dial bulbs now i can see what i'm pressing
Strut brace is back on
Fiddled with the carb enrichment pump adjustment
Carried out the "cup" mod now boost is up to around 16-15psi

Then today the track prepping began for snetterton track day :crap: slightly nervous about this.

Took him out today after putting in 200ml of millers extra cool (3.6% mix with renault premix coolant and a bottle of millers octane booster to stop any det that may come with the increased heat from 20 mins of abuise

Coolant temps are now alot more steady than before.
When giving it some abuise the temp moves up a very little but not half as much as before but the temp comes down alot quicker than before so its doing its job well :smokin:

Adjusted the brake bias as it was majorly to the rear so i could bed the new pads and disc's in. So now its more to the front.

Changed the oil aswell still using 15w40 mineral oil for now as its working fine and i want to make sure its bedded in 100% as i've only done 950 miles since i built the block, will wait till around 1500 miles before i start using semi synth :agree:

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110726_171310.jpg

Excuse the manky oily subframe its just what is left from the gearbox overhaul.
Had to shave off a few mm off the wishbone bushes with a grinder to make them fit into the subframe without having to bring out the big hammer.

Wishbone bush was red but after burning out the old bushes it was hard to keep my hands clean

Then the brakes were next as they were pants on track and faded to nothing on the 3rd lap
So an order was placed...

Brembo discs £23 delivered from next day brakes :D
And
Carbone lorraine rc5+ pads from Ktec, which i will use for track days only and swap over to normal pads for any everyday stuff or driving to static car shows

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_182859.jpg

Pads look so yummy
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_182755.jpg

Baby size brake discs
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_183002.jpg

So with the rear calipers already replaced a while back i felt the need for more shiney bits and since the front calipers are the only ones left on the car which were old, manky and had a slightly sticky piston on the passenger side....

2 new front calipers turned up aswell
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_183038.jpg

Then tonight i have been swapping over the old red dot pads and unknown discs for my new shiney brakes

New stuff fitted

Old brake disc not looking very healthy at all
http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_193024.jpg

Now i'm just waiting on some brake hose securing clips from renault as mine will probably fall to bits as soon as i go near them lol and it would look wrong having new hoses and old manky clips.

Then its back to the rear axle in an attempt to raise it up a few mm or so but that will be next week's mission

After begging the boss for time off, i've booked a couple of taster sessions so i can shakedown the car with the new stuff on
30th August at bedford autodrome on the gt circuit
8th september will be the return to the great snetterton 300
If all goes well without any big problems then i'll start doing some full day track days

Time to update again

Its taken a while to get the braided lines on,
One front copper pipe twisted with the nut as i undid the old pipe so had to make a new copper pipe from the master cylinder to the braided line,
Then the rears where mega rusted solid lots of release spray and some patience soon showed them who was boss

So had that all done and bled up during the week
Took the car out for a test spin friday to see how the brakes where and i'm glad i brought these pads once there is some heat into them they stop like nothing else.
Gave the car a bath to get the dust off last night.

Took it to work fine
Coming home was a different story...

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/289397_258790200815119_100000524223229_1016596_631 5073_o.jpg

Yup it brokedown about 2 miles from my house  the first proper 100% immobilised breakdown.
Had to get the bro and old man to bring me some tools as all i had was the worlds smallest screwdriver.
Got it started somehow by luck so didn't turn it off and hot footed it back home...
Let it idle and then i tapped the coil pack main relay and it stalled!
A spare relay got it up and running again then i took to fixing of poor alarm install in the same area and cleaned the earths up again while i was there.

So i'll be running the car a bit incase there is anything else coming out the wood work and going to order a new coil pack, coil pack relay and fuel pump for safety as i dont have spares of these

Well yesterday didnt go so well up at snetterton - october 8th

It was a lovely morning

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_074000.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_073952.jpg

I got me a garage too

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_073359.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_073342.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_074018.jpg

All up packed we went in search of food in tyrells.... and it was awesome!

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_075256.jpg

We came back to find another renault friend in the garage next to us :)

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_091711.jpg

So we then went out on the sighting laps after the briefing and noise testing, the track was wet in places but didn't give a problem

Sighting laps over time for the next car group and then the bike groups to go out

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_091736.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_091802.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_094901.jpg

Then it was go time!
First session of the day
We dropped the boost from 18psi to 10psi to save the clutch from slipping
Everything was going swimmingly well, heel and toeing into corners everything was sweet
Was in front of the apt saxo for a few laps but let him go past on a straight as it was rapid when it got going.
Then we came across a 10 plate mini cooper s for 4 laps, I didn't drop below 5000rpm at any point during this and was reving it right round to the end of the rev counter at 7000rpm.

Well the mini with all its track stickers from everywhere in the uk had a renault 5 stuck to it going in, out and through the corners but on the straights it got some space between us but i could out brake the mini due to the awesome carbon lorraine front pads i've got fitted :D

Well session ends we cruise around in 5th and 4th letting the car cool down.
Pull into our garage and open the bonnet to find an alarming amount of oil sprayed out of the boost bleed valve onto the bonnet  it did spray little bits but this was alot more than normal
Yet the engine was still idling lovely....
With the engine running i undid the oil cap and the engine was breathing really heavily :crap:
So we turned it off and thought nothing more as we know it has been breathing heavy for a while.

Got the call for the 2nd session
We go to start the car and it doesn't fire up just cugged and tried to run but sadly the heart stopped beating time and time again.
Suspecting a fuel problem we stripped the carb but it was all ok and it had spark so we ripped the rocker cover off to check we didn't have any valve or push rod problems from the high rev's abuise but it was all ok
So we had to call it a day as i think the bottom end is toast

Called mr rac and got asked if we had been racing.... noooo as if we be doing such a thing ;)

Then our prestige recovery wagon came to save us :smokin:

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_170940.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_170005.jpg

http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20111007_170351.jpg

what i will say tho is how different track day stuff is compared to car shows... we had loads of people just randomly making conversation about the car and the day, even had a biker just come say hi and we laughed at someone ruining there caravan legs lol
Oh and the boobies walking around was very yummy indeed :nodyes:

Overall a great end to the 5's short track season, its now a winter project untill next year when it will be back much better and stronger with a new engine, gearbox overhual, bigger turbo and piper 285 high reving cam

Its going to be fecking awesome!

Found the reason behind my heavy breathing problems...

Glazed the bores and fried/gumed up the cheap piston rings DOH!

I was expecting some heavy detonation marking and maybe a holey piston. But nothing! headgasket's fire ring is untouched and the head and pistons are mint. Considering its never had det cans put near it i think thats a fair result :D

And where back up to date....

Had to give my cousin back his aei/coil pack which was making mine run so it hasnt moved over christmas not a bad thing i guess

So ordered a new coil pack

Then i remembered i need to be quicker down the long straight at snetterton, altho the 888's have giving me at least 10mph extra into and through most corners i feel the back straight a bit boring

So i just ordered a turbo technics stage 3 turbo :D
Just keeping my eyes peeled for a good front mount kit to come up for sale but till then i'll run low boost to keep the intake temps down to a safe limit with the double cap alloy cooler i have atm

Hopefully i can rob my brothers megajolt kit and buy the rest of the bits i need to fit it so i can make a better timing map, rather than mess about with the original gear moving tdc sensors etc so its a bit more reliable on track

then when the renault headgasket goes pop or the head comes off again i'll change the cam for a 285 like a real man

Great read, nice to see another 5 on track! How do you find the carbon lorraine pads?

Fordy
04-01-2012, 19:44
thanks for the comments everyone :)

The pads are awesome but then i've not had the chance to compare anything else in this car other than crusty reddot pads, knackered discs and old flexi hoses

Ive had yellow stuff pads n brembos on my 200sx s14a and they were ok on track for a while till they overheated but then i was going round brands hatch flat out in 280bhp car,

The cl's are epic, everyone that has been in the car round snetterton has commented how great the feel and got me looking for the same pads for their cars the next day

They've never let me down on track heat wise, even going down the snetterton 300 back straight about 100mph into the next bend you can brake pretty late if you dare around the close to the 50 yard marker board.

Only times i come in off track are when i've been out for more than 20mins, been off roading, hungry for food or to swap passengers

Only thing that lets me down on track is the
Breathing system think i need a catch can
Cooling system
And the carb is leaking breather oil mist out around the top lobster sump sealered for now or its coming through the choke spindle bush

Normally i run 1 bar on a new stock t2, i pushed the boost up to about 1.2bar for a few laps.. knowing the fueling is correct at 12-11.8s with the wideband at both boost levels and the coolant got a bit hotter than before.

My only concern is that with the t25 on it the cooling system will be hard pushed to keep stable and i don't wanna be on and off track every 5 mins, compared to 20 mins of pretty much flat out abuise i can do atm

So Im thinking maybe an alloy rad or a new radiator and remove the grill when out on track

You're not supposed to finish a rebuild project and then actually use the car. People don't do that here. :wasntme:

You have three options -

- waste years and years, never complete the project and sell on (in bits or otherwise)
- complete the project but always find new things to do other than use the f'kin thing
- complete the project and sell on as soon as it's done

Because i know people like to see shiney bits here you go :)

New turbo is on! and set to 14psi @ carb top using the dash boost gauge as my standalone gauge has gone tits up

Stage 3 hybrid vs an old spare t2 i was gunna use as a surcharge return and then keep my new t2 as a spare

I think my rad is leaking out the bottom so i've invested in a lovely 50mm alloy radiator without built in oil cooler (have external mocal oil cooler fitted) and a new low temp fan switch for good measure

So true :D

Are these alloy rads any good? The price is great and I'm thinking of getting one. Mine (foolishly) has a copper core rad and is starting to leak.

What's the best oil cooler setup to use (complete kit preferred)?

Great build thread, thanks for writing it.

Fordy
14-01-2012, 16:34
well ive never had a problem with any alloys rads ive fitted on other cars i've had :) so cant see there being a problem

Altho i think i may of messed up.... i thought it was the rad leaking (best guess)

then i remembered the snapped off water pump bolt which several machine shops have tried and failed to remove so i sealed the pump on and hoped the rest would hold it leak free....
So whilst it was jacked up today when i was looking for an ac jet i dropped  I looked at the bottom of the pump and saw a ball of green coolant on the water pump housing :sad2:
Now i'm hoping its just from where i bleed the coolant yesterday so cleaned it off and gunna recheck it in a few days

If the head needs to comes off again i'm pulling the engine out with a crane and resealing the sump again, and changing the cam :smokin:

Well it went pop again, had a mayo issue and was coming back from gsf after buying a new blue hg convinced it was just the hg at fault...

Coming back from gsf i cracked number 1 liner whilst showing a clio 182 who was boss...

needless to say maybe i should of brought that 2mm needle valve sooner
cause the fueling was perfect on the rich side low 11's ready for track so could only be a empty carb bowl to blame and 20psi on the tt stage 3 turbo added in the mix as i was pulling 4th n 5th gears for a long time in front of the clio untill it went

few pictures of the mess

Could paint the bay fella but tbh unless my brother is going to do it for me i won't be doing it, it looks fine from above and the bonnet is rarely open for public viewing

Spent all evening cleaning the block best as i could, chasing every thread on the block and crank and helicoiling sump threads as 2 had stripped causing a leak and 2 are just falling apart so gunna fix them once ive got another helicoil kit

Also checked the v5 vs the engine block number.... shock it doesn't have its original block in there
Only a couple of pictures not really showing much

not updated this for a while the car has changed a bit tbh.
It made 189bhp at just shy of 20psi on the t25, then we went for more and made 204bp with the boost wound right up to hit it :)

But sadly the time to sell up has come around
I feel like the challenge if over, built a half decent proven track car that since the new engine has proved to be realible *touch wood*

not quite sure what to price it as since everthing is pretty new as people can see from this thread

Only bad points about the car now is the front driver seat fabric on the outer bolster is gone pretty much, the passenger seat frame doesn't slide. and well its just not a mint oem standard car, its been built for a purpose and does it very very well

Im thinking of starting off at £3500 then see what offers turn up, need to get back into something jap and rwd again but i'll miss this car so much :(

ask 3.5k and hold out for every penny... its worth it:smokin:

some smart ar5es will try offer less but feck them, you can't build it for 5 or 6k so its a bargain.. im building my own and car/parts alone is something like 8k, id hate to think what other peoples projects have cost and been sold on for..
