Hi all,
After getting underneath the car i have noticed that the ball joint housing on the gearbox has broken slightly resulting in the ball just pulling out.
i am thinking of fabricating a bracket to hold this in place but am unsure of whether or not this would work
any ideas would be great

Have a look at my project thread (project yellow peril) and you'll see all the parts you need. Looks like you just need a new nylon cup and circlip.

You can bridge the gap with these aluminium repair rods.

Just put the circlip in on it's own and bridge the gap with a rod. You can then remove the circlip as the aluminum rod won't stick to the steel circlip.

Are you using a nylon cup?
