change to a volvo gearbox and starter wont engage???

i have recently fitted a renault gearbox to my C1J engine which came off a volvo. for some reason the starter wont engage with the flywheel now and have tried other starters incase it was that.

what can it be?

the gearbox serial number is M60-373E / R008696.

has anyone got any ideas?

its as if the starter has not got enough reach and is to far away to engage with the ring gear but i dont know why as the castings are the same as a standard GT box.

im lost so please any advise will be appreciated.

there is a locking dowel but i brought a new starter also and it came with 2 in a bag. should there be 1 or 2?

You only need 1 in place matey and it should be in the following location cirlced in red

make sure that the first bolt you put in is the 1 where the dowel is
