does anyone on here know much about the 1.8 20v vag lump??
i have an audi that have that engine and the temp gauge shows it overheating after minutes??!!jumps straight to red.
its got plenty of fluid/no leaks and hold pressure fine
is there a dodgy sensor i should be kicking or do the panels play about??

I'd go with the waterpump, vags own is normally a plastic impeller which breaks up, you can replace this with metal impellers nowadays.

Either that or an engine temp switch, best of putting vagcom or an obd-2 reader on it if the engine light is on

iv put my scanner on it and there are no faults!
does any one know what resistance i should be getting from the temp sensors??
im thinking its a sensor as the dash reads red even when the engine isnt that warm?!

try a new temp sensor an just reset the fault codes...

right iv just had a little look at the audi and there seems to be no pressure building up in the cooling system, also there is no coolant flowing back to the bottle from the return pipe when the engine is running.which suggests no flow??so could be waterpump as was mentioned?
does this sound about right?if so are these ok to do?has anyone done one?

one other thing is that bolted to the back of the top of the rad is what seems to be an electric waterpump buzzing its nuts off:scratch: is this normal?do these engines have an electic pump or is it something completly diffrent??
any help greatfully appreciated

The pump could be the turbo coolant circulator when the engine is off

:agree::agree: that makes sense as it runs when the engine is off

think im gonna sort out a waterpump and just to be safe a stat as well!

is there anything i should be careful of when doing the belt on this engine?
iv done lots of belts on lots of things but never an audi!!

When changing the waterpump you should change the timing belt is what the word on the street is :agree:

sorted out the audi today :D:D
new waterpump from audi now has metal propellers so fitted that and replaced both belts and all of the rollers/tensioners.
was much easier than i thought it was going to be!wish i worked on them all day instead of the junk i get at work!!

Pump went on my S3 the other week, £150 for all the parts, new pump, belt kit inc tensioners (contibelt I think it was & circolli pump with metal impellor) & aux belt.. took me & my brother 4 hrs to do & that was messing with other cars at the same time, the engine mount is a right PITA & it's a bit tight but doable.. make sure you rotate the engine after doing the belt as it likes to jump a tooth out ;)

My impellor had dissintergrated BTW...

"EDIT"
Just seen you sorted it, lol.
