get billet, the cam lobe surface is less harsh on the cam followers due to the angles involved, due to more meat being on the cam.
also the parkerising of the metal surface may not be that great on the regrind.

That won't be a billet, that'll be ground onto a new standard blank.

Won't the standard blank have come from a billet initially Andy? Or are standard blanks forged/cast rather than machined?

Lee, 'billet' simply refers to the solid, high-quality bar of metal from which, by machining, parts are cut away until you are left with your desired shape, such as a crank/cam for example. It's a more expensive method than casting or forging but the quality is usually higher.

See the lower part of this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankshaft

Mark/Andy, please correct as appropriate.

I'd ask them again to confirm that it's a billet, and not just a new blank, last time I asked they wanted ~£500 to do a billet.

Andy, for my own knowledge, how does a blank differ from a billet over and above having already been made generally camshaft shaped ready for profiles to be cut?
