hi all,

looking for advice on oil make and grade. i do quite a few track days with my five gtt ph2 and in the past had two turbo seal & bearing failures, to be fair when on track i dont take it easy and i push every bit of performance out of her the whole way round 10 laps of oulton at a time. my engine and surroundings are quite modified and when on track i run 15psi boost from a t25 unit, i do have an oil cooler fitted, oil pres is showing a steady 40-45 psi at revs when hot. (enough??)

anyway maybe someone has been in a similar situation and poss found a good oil that works well bearing in mind i cant afford the upmost exotic brands. or does my oil press sound a bit dodgy? i know it would be fine for road use but may need more pres for hard use on track???

any advice will be appreciated:)

cheers......mike

i was told to use the best oil i can get.as the cheaper oils braeakdown very quickly under high temps, its sort of false economy useing cheap oil because if it breaks down twice as fast you have to change it twice as much as the expensive oil.so probably costing you the same as an expensive oil if not more

i use moble one 15/50 :agree:

Just because an oil is expensive doesn't always mean its the best. If a company spends millions on advertising it will have to sell its product at more money to make its money back. So sometimes you can find a little known product can be just as good a quality but cost less money :)

I tried Mobil one and my bottom end started knocking, went back to Halfrauds 15/40w semi synth, no probs:agree:

If you're pushing your car that hard on track, the oil should be changed after every event anyway.

Halfords oil never caused any harm with my old Raider, Trusty, or T-cup.

Mobil 10/40 super s for the gt. Good price quality oil. I used nothing else with the c1j after having issues with other known brands.

I did frog of the pod on a mixture of 10-40 semi synth 15-40 semi synth and 15-40 mineral oil!:ashamed::ashamed:

Thats what happenes when your still working on your car at 3am the night before doing constant oil changes to try and get all the mayo out! :wasntme:

Incidently no problems at all drove it 400 miles or so and did 14 runs!

Changed it to the ever fathfull mobil-one 15-50 fully synth as soon as I got home mind ;)

I tend to go for a 10/50 or 20/50 recently been using Valvoline Race.. Then add some zinc to it... :)

Failing that, halfords 15/40 oil seem fine to use, never had issues...

When last changed mine before pod put some 15-40 mineral in it, would ths do engine any harm rather than semi synth?

cheers for all your advice fellas.

i have been using rock fully synth 10/40 for the one reason that i stock it at my shop and never had any probs before. (apart from in my 5 that is!)
gonna change to something else now just to eliminate any prob with my choice of oil and am going to fit a baffled sump although ive not had one up to now and the only mechanical fail ive had is turbos! the motor its self is still running strong and sounds as sweet as when i 1st built it.
im starting to wonder if ive just been unlucky with turbos, got to say that the 1st one i blew had been on it for 4 years trouble free and had all the stick i could through at it before giving up on a high boost dyno run, that could poss have just been a combination of old age (the turbo that is!) and my own stupid fault for pushing her with to much boost to get some high numbers. i have however since done a couple units in a short time on track, thats whats concerning me???.
