On my 21 there was a connecter that I could never get into the side of the gearbox becuase of funny angle. Im not sure if its the same but there may be a connector attached to your box which has come loose when being bump started.

The reverse light is switched by the green plug on the side of the gearbox.

If the light isn't working then it's going to be either a duff wire somewhere or the switch/connector is buggered.

If you just short out the wires going to the switch in the side of the gearbox it will tell you if the wires are ok.

If that works then the switch must be broken. Get a replacement off Phase 1 16v Turbo & then be careful when you change it because the gearbox oil will be making a bid for freedom when you unscrew it so you've got to be quick!!

or you could just leave it like i have, as it will still pass its m.o.t without reverse lights.

No, a car will pass an MOT with no reverse light, but it won't pass it with a broken reverse light if it is fitted.
