View Full Version : 5 Turbo or Clio 16v or Hybrid?!
First post!
Hello all,
I have been looking at getting a 5 turbo or a clio 1.8 16v as a weekend car/on the road project. Can't decide which to go for and was wondering if there are many parts that are difficult to find for the 5 turbo being that bit older.. or if clio bits are getting scarce?!

The best thing about 5's & clios are they are as common as muck...
Parts are easy to get and cheap ish...
If your after a track/strip fun car 5's are great, handle well and power is easily achieved for less bucks...
If your after a restoration/minter project then thats where funds and time looking for parts can be hard..

Well there's only a handful of 5 Turbos in this country, so as you can imagine, spares aren't exactly growing on trees. Also, if you do find one for sale, you're looking at £15k+ for a good one, whereas the Clio's can be had for pennies in comparison. As for the availability of Clio parts, I'm not too up on them. I can't see it being anywhere near as bad as the 5 Turbo though.
In my opinion a 5 turbo if you have a lot of time on your hands (going by my experience with my 5turbo engine). but awesome engine on boost :):)
Clio 16v ... a engine you have to rev hard to get the most out of ..but parts are easy to get a hold of for them :) ..clio16valver forum members have most bits your after also. Watch out for sensors packing in .... idle control valve being one or the Tps sensor ...gearbox's like to go on them ..make sure the cars had a cambelt done as changing one of them is an engine out job.
Im going on what ive read on a forum about the clio 16v as i was going to get one ..but instead i put a 5turbo engine in mine

I have a Renault 5 GT Turbo, a red Clio 16v and another blue Clio 16v with some trick bits.....
When I drive the R5 on track I'm always aware of the temp gauges.....not so with the Clio 16v but slightly less fun....however with my trick Clio 16v.......big grin! Loads of track time (around 120 laps of brands last time) and still take the kids to school the next day in heavy traffic.....;)

GThanks for replies!
haha looks like a a 5 GT might be the one then.. I will just have to go sensible with track use. I have seen many a racing 5 GT pouring clouds before half distance!
Are there any cheap on the road GT's up for sale at the moment that could do with some tlc? Most seem to be modified and expensive, understandably

just sniff around ebay and in the classifieds, or even drop Mike a msg, he will have something or know of something that might be what your looking for.. good shell knackered engine, or a runner with poor body and paint..

give him a msg before you go looking anywhere else as you could save yourself alot of messing about:agree:
as for the track a healthy engine etc with a good set up and you'll have next to no problems.. these cars are what the owners make them:)

If its all set up correctly mate there's no need to be seeing this, at Mallory for the past 2 years don't think we've seen one 5 pop its gasket after a full days abuse on the track.
