Can anyone shed any light on this, not having much look with the helpful people on Cliosport:rolleyes:

I get a strange knocking noise when pulling away and when I come of the accelerator or going down a hill. It doesn't happen under acceleration.

It's sounds like it's coming from under my feet / drivers side wheel, suspension maybe.

It doesn't happen all the time, sometimes it knocks once and sometimes it knocks repeatedly for about 5 - 10 seconds!

Jacked the car up today, the wishbone to subframe appears pretty solid.

So it could be something to do with the steering arm or clutch i think

Engine mounts?

Driveshaft could be ****ed?

Suspension could be duff?

Ball joint?

Wheel fell off?

I'll also be interested to see what this issue is because Millie's 172 is making a few choice noises from the front??

I has the front up in the air at the weekend with the wheels off looking for something amiss??

I'm thinking it could be a the dogbone mount maybee??

What's the solution?? One new engine mount? If so which one?? Obi-one! :D

Has the cambelt been done...or dogbone been off for some reason??
It can be put on upside down resulting in the exhaust manifold hitting the anti-roll bar.

Scratch that, as this happens mostly on acceleration.......
Check the lower arm ball joints haven't gone dry....

It was getting dark on the drive tonight when we jacked it up, but nothing was obvious. From driving it, I get the feeling its clutch related, thrust bearing?

What ever it is its not consistent which is well annoying!

Don't think its engine mounts as we got the engine rocking and had no clunks, plus I don't think its suspension as in neutral going down hill left to right etc no knocks.

When it does knock, its when changing gear / engaging / disengaging the clutch.

steve mate, honestly no clue, can't say I've ever done much with this engine when it's been a clio :D I've heard it's common for manifolds to knock, unsure weather that was 172 or another version. solution might involve a hammer.

It would be worth jacking front wheels of the deck, leaving wheels on and runnin it up through the gears to try and re-create the knocking. Try putting it in 4th, the weight of the wheels will make it feel like you are pulling away in 1st, if you get my drift. it may be enough to get the engine moving enough to make it knock while someone stood close by investigates it's cause.

the cambelt was done in 2008, only had it a few weeks myself though!

it's an 02 reg and has done 49k.

as jay said, it doesn't happen when the engine rocks! which makes me think it's possibly the clutch

The downpipes are very common for knocking on the bulkhead, can sound like a rumble when accelerating by your feet, or a clunk when backing off, downshifting. Its dificult to fix, the renault fix was to bash the exhaust on the bottom :crap: new engine mounts cure it again but only for so long. you could try and adjust your engine mounts. If thats the noise your hearing that is. also the engine steady on the bottom at the rear of the engine can wear.

Dan, think we'll have a look at the downpipe.........

sometimes my trophy rattles on hard acceleration, been told that one of the heatshields or that sandwhich(forgotten what it was called) thingybob on the downpipe are the usual suspects

could be engine mount
take off the plastick cover and youl see two slots . get a lollypop stick or somthing sim and slip some grease in between the rubber stops and the metal part of the mount . silcon grease would be the best to use or a grease that dont react with he rubber;)

alot of the clio sports suffer from a strange knocking noise that is caused by the top mounts location!!it can be constant or complettly random and you can feel it through the pedals because its transfered through the bulkhead.

if you take your top mounts off and see if they have been rubbing on the back of the strut top mounts!!
il try and dig out the note and scan it up. it show which peice you have to cut away to cure it.
that may be your prob

all the mounts seem prone to wear / movement etc, check the one under the battery and make sure the nut under neath is tight (an utter **** to get a spanner on 18mm), and think cause its a pain if its been swapped previous nut does not always get done up tight. Also you can slacken off the drivers side one and pull the engine then mount as far forward as possible and tighten up again, just make sure not too much play in this one and also as stated check the dogbone one underneath.

UPDATE!

The knocking noise has now become consistant with turning right.... does this narrow it down further?? ball joint maybe??

it stopped doing it today, other than the odd knock! it's got a mind of it's own!!
