Turbo failure

What might cause a turbo to fail. I have had it rebuilt properly and done under a thousand miles on it at various boost levels but nothing extreme and it appears To be blown again as when I come off throttle I get a puff of blue smoke and I have play in the wheel side to side. I have always run a mocal inline filter to the turbo and I checked it and it's got no swarf inside. Oil pressure is high so and no leaks going to the turbo so I'm happy with the oil supply. Any ideas on what may have caused the failure. It's a t28 on a c1j averaging 20psi.

Seems like you've done everything right. Could be down to bad luck.

May well be a manufacturing or component issue :)

Now if I'm running 20 psi and I shut the throttle that pressure has to escape and without a dump valve it's throwing itself back through the turbines and out of the air filter. Then after a second or 2 I get blue smoke. Could this extra pressure on the turbine be the cause of the bearing to fail again in such a short period?
I don't think it's the person who did the recon as it wouldn't have lasted this long and they are reputable.

Adam said that usually a puff of a blue smoke on throttle release relates to thrust bearign damage. He said he's also chuffed that you've already check the inline filter already as so many seem not to :agree:

Thrust bearing damage, damn :(. Any ideas on what causes that to fail. It did the exact same thing before being rebuilt and that was on a differant engine and both had good oil pressure and supply. I don't want to have to shell out for another rebuild and be in the same situation a few miles down the road. I can only think it's from compressor surge but no one else I know uses a dump valve.

I've ran 20lbs for ages with no dump valve, had no issues :)

Adam said the only way that thrust bearing damage can occur is by either overboosting or low oil pressure at high rpm usually.

Few things to check: Take the elbow off and check for thrust movement, also consider that the actuator used might be too strong.

Thanks dawn/Adam appreciated :). It did run a -34 actuator and it was fine. I then Fitted a -31 and done around 100 miles on it and this happend. I never got round to trying the one he lent me. Also the new engine has strong oil pressure especially when the revs are up as it has a shimmed oil pump. I will drop it off to Adam when I have some cash and see what they make of it. I will Also do a compression test aswell to make sure it's not piston rings or valves causing it although I'm pretty sure my turbo is the cause. Just annoying that I don't know why it went.

This is the thing, difficult to say without taking it apart and taking a proper gander. I've got a couple of suspicions but let me know when it's coming in so I can treat it as an urgent job for you :agree: - Adam

With the pump being shimmed, what oil pressure do you have at higher rpms, could this perhaps force a bit of oil past the seals?

I can't give a exact reading yet as my gauge only has a small 90 degree range and it's hard to read between 50-70 psi. A new 270 degree one was orderd this morning so I can get better measurements.

Marc check your breather system for blockages. As I had this problem a while ago only to find I had forgot to put breather holes in my Fanta catch tank..:cry: and you did move some bits about the other week. ;)

Logg fixed it. My new home made breather only had a tiny hole and it was not Letting the engine breathe properly. I made a new tank and it's problem solved and my oil leaks hav calmed down aswell. Nice one Logg.
