It does pi55 you off but everything that is going on is only for your own safety.

But you are far better off being at home then being stranded at an airport abroad waiting to come home, so technically your one of the lucky ones

Someone told me today that Iceland has Volcanos that (if they erupt) could spread so much ash that it would ground all flights across Europe for days or even months. Luckily for me i never fly and the only time i can imagine it would affect me would be in five years time when me and Vicki plan to go to New York.

Be just my luck if it happened then!

Anyone else heard of this or is it an urban myth?

I would not worry too much mate, Volcanic activity in Iceland is very rare.

Well, sods law and all that! I'm due to fly on the 21st so just hope it clears by then. I just wish i'd remembered this old thread before i booked as it would have saved me the worry, oh well!

U.S. Patent Office Acknowledgment of "Application For Turbine Engine Technology Modification"

Attention: Mr. J. Heath

This correspondence serves as preliminary proof of your recent application for a patent on the following modifications to aircraft turbine propulsion systems:

"Application is herewith submitted for the modification of commercial aircraft turbine high bypass jet engines with intent to permit the ingestion of volcanic ash up to and including a 50% ratio of ash to air. This technology is to be based on redesigned FADEC digital fuel control units permitting compression intake values sufficient to combust Jet A at 85% efficiency levels for up to 5 hours of continuous operation. Cumulative operation not to exceed 15 hours without rebuild of engine hot section. In conjunction with the redesigned fuel control units, application is simultaneously made for the development of diamond coated stage one compressor blades, with titanium coated and abradable carbon fiber anodized stage three turbine section blades."

Sincerely,

Beau "Gus" Longchott

The whole volcano flight ban thing is incredibly ****ing stupid bollocks. The only times planes have been badly damaged by ash in commercial aviation history is when they have flown nearly directly over the volcano. This has happened twice. On neither occassion was there any loss of life.

Basically, the whole shut down is based on bull**** guesswork theory about the concentration of ash in the upper atmosphere, is totally unstustainable (as proven by the myriad of commercial test flights that took place over the weekend), and is basically just some ****wits from NATS, an organisation nobody had heard of last week, having their ****ing 15 minutes, along with Brown being a pussy because he is scared a plane falling out of the sky would ruin his election chances (as if utterly destroying the country for the next 30 years hadn't done so already). ****ing ****wits.

They are still flying out of Reykjavic, and most decent guesses reckon an exclusion area of 30-50 miles would do it! Meanwhile, this cock fest has cost the UK knocking on for £1 billion, for the sake of a possible overhaul on some smegging engines.

ARGH! PRICKS!
