On the top of the strut, should there be anly play/movement in the top hat part?

Mine moves very freely, about 5mm up and down and it wobbles. I've taken it off as there's a knocking when turning left, but only when accelerating. I'm thinking the top bearing/bush has gone underneath it.

Does this sound right? It looks like there is a split aroud the bearing/bush but I didn't know it that was common.

Looking from within the engine bay, the top hat will move a little when the steering is turned.

However, if you havnt already changed it, the big rubber donut type bush may be worn and gone soft and allowing the extra play in the top hat.

Strip the damper Rich, replace the bigger rubber donut bush with a poly one & the bearing, you'll notice the difference :agree:

All the R5 damper parts are the same other than the ph1 and ph2 top mount...

The top hat is the same across the board :agree:

deffinatley worth checking 'top hats' this was what caused the play in mine lol
