Hiya ! I could really do with some friendly advice if anybody would be so kind :)

I have never had problems with losing belts before, but on my way to work today the alternator belt turned it self over ! I managed to put it back on and by the time i had reached work it had turned over again ! This is after 40 miles of testing and no problems :(

The three pulleys seems to be straight and true and i also have the OE anti-belt jumping metal peg on the water pump. The alternator seems to be adjusted in the correct position to keep tension without destroying the alt bearings, and its the correct belt :)

The anti-belt jumping peg thing use to work before too, very well, but i have a feeling it may have bent slightly out of position when doing the top-end rebuild.

Is there anything obvious i am missing which would make the belt WANT to turn over?

Do the belts just get old and worn enough to develop abnomal play in them? After 4 years you would i thought i would know this by now !

I have no idea what i am talking about ? Please help me, i love my car and i try to take good car of it :( Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

The belts turn over when they are worn out mate, replace it for a newun. If that doesnt work check the alt bushes.

recently twisted a belt up on the 5lag, then put i back on and it flew off again, (thats with the peg fitted). once they are out of shape they are knackered. fit a new one:smokin:

Always get nice new genuine Renault solid alt belts :agree:

Check the 3 bolts securing the bottom alternator bracket. One of mine had fallen out and another was loose made me jump 2 belts but hadnt had a problem after that.

Or fit a small campus crank pully, that seems to work well, along with a new belt to of course (campus).. never flung a belt in 5 years... :)

Fantastic ! Does anyone know the correct size in mm for a GTT ph2 alternator belt ?

I am gonna get a Renault one later but i have to put something on my car just to get there ! :)

The water pump is available with v belt pulley, i assume the rest of the bits are on the later c series lumps? not needed though mate o.e is up to the job;)

mine kept on jumping off! alternator wasnt quite inline with the crank pulley packed it out with a washer and it sorted it out a treat. get a steel rule on the crank pulley and it will tell you if its inline or not. dont think this is a common thing to happen most prob just mine

Is the genuine Renault alt belt grooved or toothed??

mine was toothed not proper teeth like timing belts but like cut outs to help it bend better but not sure it was genuine but did buy it for the 5 oe from a motorfactors.

Isn't there a different tensioning system used on the 1.4 R19 engine set ups that uses an extra pulley at the back of the block?

All sorted now, new belt on and anti-belt jumping thing adjusted. It was a bit strange seeing it turned over and stay on all 3 pulleys.

Thanks to everyone who posted above for their advice and help :smokin:

Glad to hear it is all sorted. For anyone else finding this thread in future:

Common causes of belts jumping/twisting:

Worn out BELT.
Worn out alternator bushes.
Lose alternator mount bolts.
Excessive revs.
Misalignment between the pulleys.
Solutions:

Correct above faults.
Fit the belt 'peg' or 'anti jumper' that goes on the water pump next to the pulley.
Fit a smaller 'campus' crank pulley and associated 1138mm belt. This slows down the speed of the belt and reduces the likelyhood of it jumping. There are 2 sorts of campus pulley, ones with holes and ones without. They are both the same diameter - smaller than the GTT one.
Tertiary tensioner pulley that fits to the rear of the block (between the crank and water pump) as used on the 1.4 R19 engine.
Poly V belts - The water pump is available with v belt pulley; I assume the rest of the bits are on the later c series lumps.
OE GTT belts are not 'knobbled' underneath, length: xxxxmm by 10mm (1152 iirc???)
OE CAMPUS belts are not 'knobbled' underneath, length 1138mm by 10mm.

Recommended solution:

1. OE setup with new belt, and alternator bushes then fit a belt peg.
2. For high revving applications campus pulley conversion and peg.
3. Consider tertiary tensioner.
4. Poly V belt if required (very rare).

I went this way on mine mainly because of my I/c pipe run but I have noticed sine using the campus pulley temps of coolant get a little warmer quicker.

Well done for sorting it out matey.

is it possible that renault fitted a bigger pully to keep temps in check?

According to GSF, a GTT belt is 1180mm in length?, i have put a 1175mm Gates belt on mine for the meantime until my Renault one arrives, even that felt tight ! I must of really stretched the other one
