Handy Andy has asked me to start a new project thread for him and post up the pics so far of his latest project and when I say its nuts, I'm mean its totally insane:D
Right lets start with the basics which Andy well correct if I get anything wrong.
The car is based on a 1989 campus he bought off ebay which had a twin campus engine conversion using a R11 turbo subframe in the back. Both those campus engines have gone and a 1.8ltr 16v clio valver engine has found its way into the back but with a few tweaks :D
The basic plan is is a wide bodied kit with extended bumpers and shed loads of power form the arse end.

looks like you've got some competition stu!
I dunno, I would imagine this car will have more power, more response and a hell of a lot less weight.
So. Not much competition in a straight line lol
but in the twisties is different.
I would think this will weigh 850-900 kgs, mines 1050
and this has gotta do 500-550bhp mines only 400 at the mo.

I can't wait to see this on the road.. it'll be a real handful through those rear wheels.. I struggle with just 180 ponies! although I'll be developing the rear hubs and arms this years so I maybe able to help you a little if they work out :agree:
So. Not much competition in a straight line lol
but in the twisties is different.
As it stands mine does seem to handle asymetrically.. especially with me and the engine sitting on the same side - having a pasenger evens things out a bit.. although, I bet the renault 11 wider track will help.
skeete wide arches now fitted , and side vents cut out and ducts fitted,will get some pics up (cough cough )os8427;)
if it makes 400bhp that will be more than enough for me:) dont think gearbox will last long at that level :cry:

ive always had a soft spot for wide arched 5's especially the Maxi turbo:devil:
now when i first read the thread title i nearly shat myself, if there has been one thing ive wanted to do its to intergrate a maxi widearch bodykit onto a gtt's body.:devil:

Yo Handy - This is looking a bit Spesh' hope to get over soon. Is looking far better than you've been making out.

:laugh::laugh::laugh: car booked in for respray in 4 weeks time, still got to choose a colour :confused: metalics , pearls(to show n shine) ,red(fade to much) ,white ,black,(to much hassle to keep clean /show up marks) lairy bright colours are a no no,was thinking of something different, looked at some light greys and blues, something subtle,without attracting to much chav attention:scratch: thought about porsche meteor grey,or battleship greyish colour,something like that v8 twingo of the front cover of the old pfc magazine ,any suggestions ?? did think about doing it in maxi production racer colours and decals:cool:
just finished making alloy cover plates for rear vents (to hide the join between fibreglass duct and outer skin of body kit) could not believe the difference between the two moulded side vents:sad2: must have been 10mm difference in height and width :scratch: anyway more piccys coming your way os84762;)

new ford fiesta has a subtle OE purple colour....
(just checked- its called Morello - a dark metallic cherry colour)
Check out the audi tt denim blue.. it would be my choice followed by s3 blue (a bit louder) or bmw estoril blue from the m3 I had fiesta painted in that and looked real nice.. or there's always old faithful... Raider blue :) ..either colour and i bet the result will be stunning!

looked at a bmw rally blue that was quite nice,should be getting some 9.5x16 on rear and 7.5 x15 on front , 5 spoke split rims:eek: need to come out another 80mm, which figures out to be -7mm offset on the rear :laugh:

only problem with a red car is that IANMM already has a red wide arched beast, dont really want to follow if you know what i mean;)
I know its not a blue like your after but... i was looking at upgrading my VW T5 today and thay do the new ones in a metalic pearl brown (looks sooo much better that it sounds) or VW bamboo gray is a realy nice pearl gray. :agree:

I don't think andy is going for a race look again, you may remember his ph1 black gtt with ronal turbos, stripped and stickered up like a cup car. The bonnet in the earlier pics is his carbon one off said car.

Plus, I'm sure I read once that out of the 8 original Maxi's that remain, only one of them is in this country, and that's one of DIAC sponsored cars (not to be confused with the replica that's also in the DIAC colours).
Because of the reg' number ;)

I've no idea on that one. It's definitely a Maxi kit, which JP specialises in fitting to non-Maxi's. They must be the gayest wheels I've ever seen though :crap:
That colour scheme is what Carlos Sainz' Maxi wore, and that car's now owned by Renault. I know there are several replicas in that colour scheme.
I'm trying to think where the original Maxi's are. Renault built 20 (to homologate them). They broke 10 immediately (for spares). Two were written off.
Four are owned by Renault.
One sold in Monaco a couple of years back.
One sold in France last year, on carclassic.com.
There's the one I mentioned in my previous post, in the UK (I think it's owned by DV8Motorsport).
That leaves 1 :scratch:
I could very well be, and probably am, wrong, as I haven't really followed anything to do with the Turbo 2's/Maxi's etc for a couple of years. Where's Moggy when you need him? ;)

Don't paint it a modern metallic colour, they always look **** on old cars.

It's not done anything whilst I've been looking, but it may well be heavily into the dogging scene when my back's turned.

choosen colour, its a maxi mayer colour reference 7-3482 which is quite close to bmw corperate blue(a gloss version of a bright electric blue) is how i can best describe the colour:)

The colour which andy has chosen looks good on the car and i think it will suit it.
But it is hard to tell as he has only tried it on a little piece of the rear quarter :)

I'm with John, its not a mad modern colour, infact its close to the original Gordini blue, should look spot on

The welding should be done by august.
2011 if track records are to be considered.
Pleanty of room in the car - until you get in then there's a bit of a squeeze.
Anyway, stop hijacking your own thread you numpty, back to the colour. Sounds great. Can't wait to take a peak tonight when we roll up.

once the shell is sprayed (2 weeks ),i will get the engine in and put up more piccy's, your all very welcome to come over and give me a hand ;);) free bacon rolls and tea :agree::laugh::laugh::laugh: have ordered the v band connectors and bends /connectors for the very short (3" diameter)exhaust system this week :laugh::laugh: along with alloy bends for the hard pipe boost kit:)
btw jimmy b, still loving the borbet's;) might get a set myself :cooter: (if i can get the offset right)

I've no doubt, but what Scoff has achieved was no easy achievement - 9's is a very big ask. That said, there will be a lot of weight over the wheels LOL.

re 9's guys, not wishing to sound pesimistic but it takes about 145mph trap even with RWD to pass at 9.9. 145mph will take 550hp+ and no renault JB/JC gearbox will deal with that at the rear wheels :crap:

Nope, ive seen RWD cars crack 9`s with only 140mph trap, they get out the box well.. But as you say the gearbox wont last to see them times, prob just fail trying to launch the 1.5 60ft needed..
10`s is some doing, 9`s is another game... good luck

The first attempt to lift the engine had it's problems - namely a broken lifting eye.

been a busy boy today ,drive shafts in , turbo and turbo blanket bolted on,exhaust cut to length a test fitted ,just needs welding(jp racing cough:innocent::innocent:)coolant pipes fitted,oil cooler pipes fitted,fuel pipes to inlet /pressure reg fitted ,oil catch tank/header tank re-fitted,oil return to sump fitted,template for n/side front engine mount made as r11 item wont fit jc5 box:cry::cry:r25 v6/21 turbo airbox fitted:cooter:, deffo trying for national day , rolling road on 10 august:scared:

I have a slightly easier method of installing the engine, I have a little trolley see picture.. I've since modified it slightly with two raised bits that meet the subframe giving clearance for the sump.
With the back of the car jacked up, I wheel the engine into the engine bay.. slide a jack underneath, jack up and drop the four mounting bolts in, this allows me to do the whole job single-handedly.. then plumb up as normal, it's quite useful for unsociable hours when you just feel the need to take the engine out :niceone:
I generally leave the driveshafts, hubs and struts connected although thats down to preference!

You could mock up a perspex right rear 3/4 'glass' and have a cold feed straight to the airbox/turbo?
That way you could incorporate a subtle duct for the air scoop effect :)

could make an alloy plate with duct running out of it ,directly feed into airbox, that way the air would have to be pulled over the wheel arch void :cool: another good idea andy:agree:
few more updates, fitted gear box oil and engine oil , intrestingly because i've shimmed the the front drivers mount by 12mm and fabricated passenger side the engine,it seems to be tilting back a liitle more ,and has taken a bit more oil in both area's ie it has taken 4 litres of gear oil ,and 4 litres of engine, the dipstick only shows half full , or do the f7p/f7r take more oil anyway to fill:scratch: havent read oil capacity in haynes manual yet:homer:doh!:laugh:
also finished making braided brake lines and fitted on all four corners:)

4 -5 days for delivery , the manifold is the cast item jobbie that k -tec sell , but got mine of ebay £89 or try www.engine dynamics/or performance engine components (pec) only thing is if you want to run a bigger t3 then you will need a adapter plate (ebay £40-50)or weld your own:laugh: must admit if i did'nt have the supercharger ,would have gone for a tubular type with longer headers(follow on the lines of r5 turbo2 ,and bought it around the side of block

Looking mighty damn mega fella! :cool: :agree::cool2::cool2: just finished fitting new steering rack and filled the brake and hydro clutch system, then bleed the system and checked operation of clutch slave cylinder, all good with only 2 leaks on the whole system:eek: one being my fault (forgot to fully tighten one of the hose connectors on too the brake bias valve (feed in):rolleyes: the other was weeping from feed in to the hydro hand brake :crap: but sorted with a re tighten and some ptfe tape around the thread pmt ftw:agree::laugh::laugh::laugh:,also made a start on the wiring loom to engine ,which i should have finished by end of week, 45 degree bends turned up today also ,so should have that completed by end of week also:D

unfortunatly not and due to a leaky fuel cell, it maybe a while :( i do have a sound bite of the first start up but it sounds like a proper bag of spanners
fuel cell back in and new pressure gauge+ sender fitted:)

yet another set back , sump is now leaking , so the sump will be coming off again :cry::cry::cry: another pain in the arse job!!! seems strange how this only happened since fitting the recirc valve on supercharger boost pipe ,maybe causing to much crankcase pressure:scratch: will swap back over tomorrow and see what happens, and fit thrixo paste this time instead of a melleor sump gasket:crap: the eaton did make a nice whine though when running ...felt good:smokin: started to pull @2.5 andwas going nicely by 3k, bearing in mind the ignition and fueling need tweeking to really get the beast to sing:cooter: did sound a lot quieter with the recirc dump valve and engine covers in place ,rather than hissing every time u touched and let of the throttle,maybe that recirc can't handle the amount of air being released back into the turbine housing:confused: think the locals will grow to hate me judging by the look on most peoples faces as we mapped the car in the estate today :tuttut::innocent::innocent: hahhaa:devil: with da boosst init!!!:laugh:

You've gotta expect a few blips along the way which he has accepted now. There will be some pretty radical stuff wrong in the ECU and sealing the sump is no biggy, I think you're right to take out the tricky stuff and concentrate on getting the basics right first ie recircing dump valves etc. I think he's done amazing considering how quicky this has come together.

Thing is mate there shouldn't have been anything wrong with the ecu, Andy paid for a brand new unit, but Nigel stuck his nose in AGAIN and gave Andy what looked like to me a second hand unit as it had a map for a pug 306 with an S16 engine on throttle bodies and half the settings had been changed, for example the map sensor had been switched off, that would be the case on the pug engine as that uses a MAF not a MAP.
That prick nigel has alot to answer for and I personally can't wait to go over to his house and make him see the error's of his ways:upyours2:

Awesome, we can crack on with some part throttle mapping straight away then
fitted the doors /locks and rubber trim/mirrors yesterday, fitting glass tonight and re-alinging bonnet and fitting bonnet pins:)
wensday is bumpers and gear linkage
thursday is brake lines re-bleeding and testing

It failed on rear brakes as there was kink in the line to the rear and emissions as for some reason when I mapped the load site it sat in at idle the second you did anything to the throttle it would run either mega rich or lean, made no sense, Dave had it at Emerald and diagnosed a duff TPS, a new 1 fitted and the car now has a decent base map to run in on.
The oil leak turned out to be the supercharger and not the sump and I believe Andy has got the rear line sorted so its just awaiting a retest:D
been busy at it again ,since finding the oil leak(supercharger pulley wheel/snout housing)i have stripped the above and resealed as it seemed to be lacking any:sad2: which was only showing itself under postive pressure, coating the belts and off side drive shaft in the process :(
also purchased a new alternator (breakers yard find:D)
and having waited 2 1/2 weeks for new supercharger oil to arrive its now back together, i have also changed the crank pulley size , due to the fact that when being set up on the rolling road the eaton m65 only seemed to produce 4.5 psi (4500rpm)which i thought was lacking somewhat ,so i have changed from a 95mm to a 130mm diameter (1.3 ratio to 1.8 ratio which should help although i cant be sure ,so only a rough psi output as there seems to be very little information on flow rates for an eaton m65, so it could make around 7 psi (735cc ) or a possible 14 psi (1016cc) these are the only figures i could find being bounced around different forums using a google search.( if anybody knows for sure plese let me know :sos::sos::sos: ) so wont know 100% untill its up and running again:scared:
with the 130mm crank pulley and bigger trigger wheel, i had to change the metal water pump pulley to a smaller plastic item (both items came of a tdi scenic )and fabricated a new pick up sensor bracket which bolts to the sump ,

how much work is involved fitting the supercharger? I thought about this for mine just keping the 11:1 compression and running 7psi.. I was hoping to do it with an M45 as they seems to be a lot of them knocking around from the minis

very tight fit to get mine in (more luck than judgement) had to fit a 10mm packer on the drivers side engine mount by 12mm ( which gave me 10mm clearance between bulk head/ cross beam and supercharger) and fabricate a one off near side mount ,also the cross beam was also cut out re fabricated and extened 45mm towards front of car , then used redundant m10/1.5 bolt holes on the front of block to fix my supercharger mount to, and gtx alternator bracket which tensions the alternator /belt, that said eaton m45 is more adaptable than the m65 with its one piece inlet/exhaust casting (pain to work with) and your inlet manifold is much tighter to the block ,so could work quite well on yours , maybe swap positions with the alternator and have the eaton on top, level with the head,would give you better access to it , and keep the heat away , have a look on u tube for some ideas also ,just a thought :innocent:
been told to also change supercharger oil every 3500 miles if running more than 6 psi as they tend to contaminate/sliver the oil very quickly if used hard (2 cogs in the pulley housing) :scratch:, will be doing mine with a syringe and 8mm pipe (suck it out) save time hassle:)
been busy for a while sorting out yet more teething problems in between the crap weather here over the last month or so, where to begin... after fitting the new smaller plastic water pump pulley and bigger crank pulley all seemed fine for all of 8 mins ...and then crack wollap...bang !!! goodbye plastic pulley and aux belt:crap: did'nt like the tension i had placed upon it to eliminate belt squeal from the supercharger :laugh::laugh: anyway after a quick head :scratch: decided to cough up for a one off billet pulley wheel to match the plastic (crap renault item)that had blown up, why did'nt they produce it in metal like the slightly bigger o.e version of the f7p/r in the first place!!:jerkoff:, anyway after a 2 week wait and a lot of swearing trying to fit the pulley wheel on , its now on and in the mad rush to get it running again between the heavy rain showers i managed to fit the crank pulley 180 degree's out :wasntme: anyway monday night it was up and running again and sounded just awsome:cooter: well worth the effort :laugh:with the engine warmed up a few blips of the throttle where applied followed by a more aggresive stab of the the throttle, which resulted in a light showering of coolant from the header tank in the rear passenger side of engine bay:eek: it seems with the bigger crank and smaller water pump pulley in place the coolants now decided to flow a lot more at higher rpm and filling the header tank beyond its capacity at an alarming pace!!!! after more head scratching and swearing at the car,iv purchased a silicone reducer to fit on the rear outlet of the thermostat housing 18mm -13mm fitting which will then feed into the turbo and then out of the turbo back into the 8/10mm on top of the thermostat housing ,and do away with the rear header tank totaly, problem solved :D (i hope) sat morning will be intresting and the first time its been driven since being set up with a runnning in map on the rollers , cant wait :cooter: should be interesting:laugh:
if anybodys got some ideas for a coolant/flow solution let me know:D
To solve the coolant issue mate as I said we need to get a look at another F7P thats been turbo'd to see which pipes flow which way.

nope afr are in the high 12's -13's , its got soft cut set at 4000rpm then hard cut at 5000rpm supercharger starts to really pull at 4000 rpm which is a shame as i couldnt change quick enough hence the bang:laugh: need to sort out a pedal stop as hyrdo clutch works well but pushing down to far forces to much on pressure plate:crap: turbo disabled for the moment until its run in for a 1000 miles then the remap and big fun begins, if the gearbox will take it:scared:

brakes also a little bit under powered at front ,does'nt really inspire much confidence at higher speed braking , no servo being the main reason :ashamed: although it did feel quite balanced between front and back , never mind im sure the wilwood four pots coming next week will sort them out:laugh:

good to see its finally alive!!!
with my old RWD andy I ended up with 0 deg camber at the front and whatever factory standard GTT front camber is at the rear. I also stiffened the standard anti-roll bar at the rear somewhat. I played about with tracking too. A few degrees toe-in at the rear made it feel a lot more stable. Hopefully your tie rods at the rear will be pretty parrallel with the floor too. I used to suffer with bump steer with the standard rack angles until I sorted that out.
In the end the car was pretty well balanced, to me anyway. You could throw it into corners and you'd get a hint of understeer before the back started to get loose. It was quite controllable in the dry. Totally different matter in the wet. You will need to be SO carefull it's untrue. I could spin 180° at 30mph on a roundabout in the rain on new yoko A539's I think they were. Take every corner super carfull once its damp. I even lost it in a straight line once. damp road, lit the rear wheels up at 60mph and ended up heading down the carriageway at 45° for a moment. thankfully by that point I was getting used to RWD so it didn't phase me much. I think if I had of done that early on I'd have stacked it :D

Depending on what you do with the rack you could create some rear wheel steering. would take some clever geometry thinking, if your rack was above level with the track rod ends and ahead of the rear wheels this should toe out as the wheel moves up when weight is transfered to the outside wheel also going lighter on the inside wheel would have the opposite effect and toe in. but as said on bumps would prob create bumpsteer. something to look in to tho, theres a good read on competition geometry, good for learning basics, competition car suspension a practical handbook fourth edition allan staniforth.

As for the bump steer I eliminated mine by fixing the rear hubs.. quite a bit of work and my plan is to re-do them basically a copy of the rear end of a mojo a kit car which pretty much resembles what we are trying to do.. whilst I'm at it I will try to move the engine & box 100mm to equal the weight out as with me sat in it it's quite one sided although you are in a better position as you have a wider rear track to start with.. mines still std r5 gttt. Another thing I've found with mine is I need to lower it to keep the center of gravity down and in turn this means I'm running out of travel on the shocks so I may have to go stiffer with the springs (fortunatly they're 2 1/4 coilovers but it still costs when you buy a set at £30 only to find out they're too soft.. maybe I should read that book again :) )
If I make any progress I'll let you know.. I'm planing on doing a full seasons hillclimbing next year so hopefully by the end of the year I should have something that handles :) that said it's still a huge amount of fun.. and I will second what scoff says in the wet take it easy :agree::agree:

We've got a v6 coming in, in a week or so, ill try get a few measurements together, see how renault have overcome bumpsteer :D (Cheers for recommending chassis engineering, just purchased a copy :D stanforths was a lil wordy. Difficult to find anyone willing to give anything away, i liked his cheap methods of measuring certain conditions)

I'll be interested to see.. also how central the engine is and how they balance the weight when you have to bolt a gearbox on one side.. I can't help thinking left hand drive would have been the easy option for distributing weight evenly..

I thought that with the twingo, esp with that big heavy engine, but guess what, without me in in it's perfectly balanced left to right, I get in a feck it all up :D

you might be surprised how little difference moving the engine makes, work it out on a bit of paper... It's a lot of work to achieve very little.
dont think its going to make a lot of difference anyway in mine, once im in it that is ,must be the burgerking effect:laugh:
been tinkering again , after more google searching last night , it seems like my bypass /pressure relief valve working of a actuator to bypass the supercharger at a set psi is not such a good idea :crap: to many issues /fluctuations it seems according to our cousins in the usa , they either mount a wastegate /poppet valve in its place , or most blow through altogether and dont bother with the bypass at all:(
so im going to feed it constant through the eaton and fit a external waste gate down stream after the charge cooler and recirculate infront of the eaton intake, my only concern is that the intake temp could rocket even with the charge cooler in place, maybe refit my water injection system into the eaton intake to aid cooling , i dont have the room for a second charge cooler :crap:

on a more positive note , my engine bay looks a lot more open which should allow for better air circulation /cooling :)
have also purchased a remote oil filter system ,which i will fit in the rear near side wing (where the header tank used to live) as trying to get access in its current position between the supercharger is a complete pain:rolleyes:

I know that you never really finish a project, but it's so frustrating to see you being so close to getting it on the road, only to be tripped up at the last 10 hurdles. I admire your commitment and patience.

to be fair;) its not a lot of work . the system in place stays 85%the same just removing the bypass valve and two fabricated alloy bends, like u said to me few months back, its all trial and error:)

been buying more bits for the beast again , new clio valver wishbones and drive shafts with abs rings have turned up ,along with polybush set for valver anti roll bar,:cooter:
my renault scenic/clio abs hubs go into the machine shop tomorrow to have approx 3mm of metal removed from the mounting lug that attaches to the strut, ready for the launch/ traction control config on the ecu,and allow the rear tyres to pull in a bit, as im not happy with the amount of negative camber on the rear wheels:ashamed:and the bigger bearings should cope better with the stresses of running wide 16" rims
boost system is now 99.9 % complete again ,just got to get 25mm alloy pipe welded to supercharger inlet pipe,this will form the recirc system in between gear change and low rpm /idle:) airfiler box repositioned and 102mm duct work now feed into the nearside vent to hopfully give more ramming effect of cold air at higher speeds, oil sandwich plate now on and just waiting for remote filter head to turn up along with the extra pipe work:rolleyes: all going well should be up and running again by the weekend , and new suspension geometry should be in place for the weekend after,all going well:laugh:

350 -400 if im lucky:devil: all depends on how long the gearbox lasts !!!
but like you said after response more than anything and would settle for 300 bhp if it lasts for a while:)

sent off confirmation of engine size /cc etc paper work to dvla monday, so all going well should get the all clear for christmas, would just like to say a big THANKYOU to TNT ANDY for sorting that out ,i am really grateful Andy you came to my aid there,big time :cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:, and goes to show that there are decent people out there who are willing to help ,where others just want to shaft people,(difference between renault dealerships is just worlds apart)
a side note for anyone who has intentions of swaping an engine , you will need proof of engine size ,cc capcity, engine code, and number from
1- manufacturer
2- engineer (independent or vosa)
both options are not cheap ,unless you know people in the trade;);)
unless you can prove the engine swap was completed before you purchased the car:scratch:
oh, and i purchased a 140mm fan to fix onto the oil cooler(switch operated on dash ) more for track and long hard runs in the hot summer months next year,(if we get any):laugh::laugh:

Just paid £16 for four caliper bolts from my Renault dealer basically a M14 50mm bolt :( not sure there was much they could do on the price I think it was just a ridiculous price to start with.. ah well needs must :agree:
