I'm taking the engine out this weekend to get the gearbox looked at.. thought I might aswell do the cam belt.. is it straight forward? I've not changed one before.. I think I need to buy something to stop everything moving

You can hire the Renault tools to lock the cam/ crank and pulleys from a few people on the cliosport.net site.

Just don't make the mistake I did and overtighten one of the pulleys so it didn't move (fecking idiot)

I've uploaded the manuals to the techincal files section.

Heres the link

http://www.rtoc.org/files/?path=Technical%20Files/Clio%20Sport%20Service%20Manual/

there is one more file which wouldn't upload it covers the brakes and suspension so if anyone needs it fire me a pm

cheers for that.. I'll nip to gsf and grab a belt kit..

I think I might need to enlist the help of a friend as I can bolt and weld stuff on but I'm never confident about playing with the engine itself..

I know it can be done in situ in a R5 with the 172 lump by jacking up the drivers side of the engine abit (mounted undone). Not sure on the 172 / 182 as the engines are suspended mounted and you will need to remove the drivers side mount to get to the pulleys.

Prob best doing a search on the www.Cliosport.net site

No mate you can do it with the engine in, it took me and Steeve (speedy) 1.5 full days to do it on the wifes 182, that was with all the proper gear and 2 guys who've done it before. It was a bit of a nightmare to be honest, wouldn't want to do it very offten! Space is very tight and you keep having to jack it up and lower it to get access!!

Its soo much easier with the engine out tho!

Although i've not changed the cambelt(not due yet) i've done the aux and tensioner and a waterpump on the floor and that was a pain

there so tight to the leg and inner wing

My 172 is due for a cambelt, well, it's slightly overdue...

I'd rather pay someone to do it in all honesty, like you guys have said, access can be a pain.

TBH it only took us so long due to the engine builder (who will remain nameless) tightening everything to ridiculous levels, followed by the destruction of a vital tool (not the kettle luckily). On top of that was a leak from the rocker cover which needed to be removed to re-seal it. If we'd had all the tools on day 1 we could've easily finished it in a day, but it still is a pig of a job.

Its a days work with someone who knows what there doing, espeacially if its got aircon. Also makes it easier if you take the headlight out. just make sure you lock the crankshaft correctly, worth taking a plug out and making sure its at tdc. Then the caps pop out for you to lock the camshaft tool in, the de-phaser returns to its correct postion anyway so theres no need to set it up or anything, aslong as you have it locked and dont try and turn it. Sometimes the crankshaft pulley seizes you may have to pry it off gently as this should spin freely.

To me thats not a bad price...:agree:

Ive done a few cam belts on 182/172 AC and without.. Cam belt on AC cars takes around 5 hours and thats changing the aux tensioner unit and no removal of any panels etc.. with out AC its pretty easy going.. Tools if your handy with a bit of fab you could make your own tools up.. if not them laser kits seems cheap and ok...:)

You should NEVER use the laser tools they bend and can cause the timing to go out.

Thats got to be for a cup models. as the parts come to more than that.

You should ALWAYS change the aux tensioner as they can fail and take the cam belt out by rapping around the crank pulley.

Seen it happen and its not a nice thing to see.

Our prices for cup models is £210.

The job takes about 4 hours just so people have so idea on time.

What the slotted one for end of cams bends? who torqs against them anyway on a belt change? or are you referring to when cam pulleys have been removed?

Yeah the one that you slot in the end.

You shouldnt be torquing them with that on that would be crazy.

For a few pounds more for the Renault 1 its not worth even risking.

Nope i dont and never would , ive never had to remove the pulleys anyway on a clio.. If i did ill be looking for the flats on the cam if any?.. :)

If renault tools not much more then hay hoo, there you go.. :agree: still, you cant beat good old in house made tools... :p blah you renault guys have it easy with timing anyway compared to a porky GT3 or GT2/ turbo..

Enough of that, Heads up on the Prices... :agree:
