Ive just seen a photo of a steering gaitor and realised I have no idea what it does or why its there?

It can fail mot if its broke I think so what does it do?

Stops stones and sh1te getting lodged in the rack and pinion set and locking the steering solid...

it just protects the cup an ball joint.

it protects the moving parts that a packed with grease from the elements,if it splits
it allows the grease to dry up/let moisture in and eventually you will get play or failure on your steering rack, that's a basic example!
