New poster! (less than 10 posts)

Just thort I'd start a progress thread for my 5. As you can see it's looking standard and pritty clean, still a few things I want to tidy up. My plans are to keep the standard look but have a bit more bhp to it. The car is used as a daily driver and I do my best to keep it in pristine condition. Here are a few pictures..

First thing I done was refurb the speedlines, I pay'd £180 and got them powdercoated at romax, well worth the money
http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh343/B20ENJ-CODE/007567e7.jpg

I got the wiper removed from the tailgate, I think it makes the tailgate look better..
http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh343/B20ENJ-CODE/539e032d.jpg

I changed the steering wheel for a 300mil omp. It cost £100 for the wheel and hub, I think there just as gud as the mo teams if not better, especially the price you pay, the 300mil feels like the rite size for the car

http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh343/B20ENJ-CODE/f75c027c.jpg

I want the front dropping, I was thinking gaz coilovers or any better ideas?

The cheapest way to lower the front end is to purchase some -50mm lowering springs. Option B is a set of sports dampers which will give you adjustable damping with lowering springs fitted. If you have the money then yes Option C, a set of front coilovers will also do the job with the bonus being adjustable ride height.

Links below just to show options available, RTOC deal with companies that give us discount for suspension.

i changed rubbers and mounts on mine cost hundreds and had uprated konis i think and 50mm lowering springs ride was tight but comfy, not sure if coilovers replace old existing mounts etc but if they do get coilovers would be cheaper

Ricardo
11-03-2010, 21:25
50mm and the torsion bar adjusted IMO makes it look just right, i'm pretty sure i changed the bearings and rubber donuts as well which makes a big difference :)

I can't believe how much a set of full Koni sports suspensions comes out at compared to a coilover kit :scared:

coilovers only front though aint they? are back shock non adjustable

Adjustable ride height on the front, the rears are probably an uprated damper but height adjustment is on the torsion bar

benj88

Iv always preferd coilovers because you can choose the hight you want, there's not a great deal of speed bumps were I live but there's always a way of getting round things:D I was thinkin about getting some 195 45 13s I think it will look subtle il see wot I think wen
I lower it..

Yeah they look like the old school 90s Mondeo repeaters or the ones you could buy from the motor factors back in the day :ashamed:

I know it's not much but something small still makes a difference especially when it looks original all round. You can buy them from Eurocarparts for about £5-6 each or someone might have a set knocking about in their garage :)

I also went to Renault to get 1 of their dealer tax disc holders too as it has the name and logo on it :ashamed:

I'm not sure TBH mate, it's been a good couple of years since i've purchased std parts for a 5. When i ordered from from Renault i'd have to pay upfront then they'd get them in either from England or from France which would take 3-4 days, that didn't bother me as the 5 was a 2nd car on the drive. Parts like plugs, oil filter etc you'd get from Eurocarparts or GSF.

The person to try for Renault parts nowadays seems to be Phase 1 16V IIRC

This was my old tungy

The bottom end, head and gasket were completely stock and untouched, boost was stock on a T2 turbo. strapped oe intercooler and carbon kevlar turbo heatshield. The only things changed in the engine bay was an induction type air filter and the boost circuit changed. I spent money on many oe parts like new boost hoses, expansion tank, hoses, straps, black vacuum hoses to keep it looking oe.

Up to now i have done -

Inlet/exhaust manifold gasket & clean inlet up externally,
Fit new turbo/braided oil feed, hybrid t25 i think? Adam L special, Looks like a decent unit.

http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm453/Brigsygtt/Image0543.jpg

Fitted 2 1/4 downpipe with lambda bung & flowed cast elbow,
Adjust tappets, Fit chrome rocker cover & new gasket,
Rejet carb for 18 psi & refit(needs road testing to fine tune),
Fit braided oilcooler hoses to clear breadbin cooler,
Remove perc fan & associated wiring (all shot anyway),
Oil & filter change,
Fit capillary oil pressure/boost gauge, pipework into cockpit just need to fit gauges,
Fit various silicone hoses/alloy degas/headertank - Ongoing.

Sounds like a small job but i must have at least ten hours in already & not finished!

The engine bay didnt look like it had been touched for some time & needed a fair bit of maintenance despite running OK. The o.e water hoses were tired to say the least, most were shot & fell apart. Its slowly coming together though (no current pics as i forgot) will be finished at some point in next couple of days:)

well.. bit of an update!

couple of months ago my water pump went and the head gasket went as well :disagree: the head no longer had any meat on so was scrap. i bought a head off gtnutter also bought his engine that had been rebuilt by markey mark. my engine was due a rebuild so was an ideal opportunity really.

with the help from briggsy and scott my old engine came out :agree:

since then i have became a bit of a restoring peado

although the body work is in good condition the bay has never really been touched, as you can see the bay was a big dirtbag, subframe was coverd in oil as was everything else. its a good thing really because its worked well as its protected everything.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before Ben but in the winter you might find that the lack of water through the carb base can cause the throttle to stick open partially. It usually goes away when fully warm but it's a right pain in the process.

It has to do with the carb base and throttle spindle being made of different metals and warming/heating up at different rates. The spindle gets pinched and sticks.

See how you get on. If it happens, at least you'll know what it is.

benj, i know you have mentioned about the indicators and the wings being cut, but is there no way of getting the standard ones in, even a bit of sticker flex to help keep them in, or trying to make a bracket or something.

Just a thought, it would really just finish off you car :).

Mine are red and i love them, but i have red hoses, a red strut brace and obviously the side stickers so it all ties in quite nice. I would go with black calipers on your car though, that will look sweet :)
