View Full Version : Silly things you've done to your car
today the assistant manager at work, in his ultimate wisdom, decided to fill his car up with petrol instead of diesel  , and to top that, he then wondered why the staff at the petrol station got a bit funny with him when he decided to drain the tank......all over their forecourt
so what's the daftest thing you've done/heard been done to a car?
ill put my hand up, after filling up a van with oil i then drove about 90 miles up the M1 until i smelt burning.
I hadnt replaced the oil cap had i..... ooooops! AA brought me home after that!

its always funny when you try and put fresh oil in only to find you havent put the sump plug back in, nice puddle of liquid gold wasted on the floor

After doing an oil change on a smart car i was feeling very lazy and didnt wipe off the excess oil spilt from taking off the oil filter. When dropping the car back to the owner the A34 disappeared into a mahoosive cloud of smoke! Thought i had blown it up!!

This wasn't me but its the stupidest thing i've heard at work.
Quite a few years ago my old firm had forklifts down at Ford in southampton on shutdown, the forklifts ran flat out so did have quite a few breakdowns.
One made me piss myself, bloke driving forklift round had a massive bang and it stopped. Me and mate went to it and looked round and picked up some bits from underneath. Driver said 'is it bad, didn't sound good', i said 'yes it is this is your con-rod cap'. He then replies with 'well can i still use it as i need to unload that lorry!'
I just laughed my arse off!!:laugh:

lol. we allways get people ringing us up, explaining a noise, clunking banking knocking squeaking or whatever noise they can explain, then they proceed to ask, is it safe to drive??

oh bollocks!
Selling mine to Markey B was quite silly
On my old gt, i changed the plugs for splitfires, they were all the rage at the time, whilst doing the last one, i lost the nipple bit of the end of the old plug. Now whats the chances of it falling down the whole into the engine, must have went on the ground, spend half an hour rocking the car and looking for it. Sod it, plug in fired up, yeep straight in the whole. Rattle rattle
Then took head off, replaced gasket, cleaned pots out of debris, new oil and off we go. Thought ahh never mind it was probably due a new head gasket soon anyway.
About 2 days later turbo failed, aarrrhh bought a new turbo, some hybrid a phase 1 1a it was called £450, fitted that. Car fixed again woho, oh no about 2 day later that turbo stated to smoke, played hell with supplier, must be a faulty turbo i yelled. He asked if i had changed the oil when fitting new turbo, of course i did. Liar :scared: I then got the turbo replaced, i did change the oil this time and bingo car was fine. I must have left some tiny debris in the engine, probably remnants of that bloody spark plug and it cause me to contaminate my oil.
All this hassle from one nipple.
Had purchased a car and had a little misfire when I got it, needed it to get through the MOT so decided to give it a quick service as didn't know when the last time it had one as previous owner had it sitting for a while. Changed all the plugs but as I went to put the last plug in (one nearest to the water pump) it decided to cross thread. Some previous owner had decided to jam it in, guess thats where the mis fire was  well got a garage to helicoil it. put the new plug in and it was rattlling around and making god knows what sort of noises. Took the rocker cover off and noticed it was the push rod wasn't sitting right, tried setting the clearance on there and was still about 5mm out even at full adjustment. Removed the push rod and noticed it was bent. Removed the head and then started seeing the rest of the damage, valve had bent, looks like when helicoiling he went to far and chewed up the inside. Luckily I had another head so made a good one out of the two, put it all back together and away I went. All because of a slight misfire :(
I always let my cars warm up for a couple of minutes before i jump in and and drive off, it also gives me a chance to puff away on a last tab so I normally just reach in and start. Unfortunately on this occasion I'd left it in gear because the rear brakes had been sticking, anyway 182bhp launched it double quick into a post and in the process ran me over.
That cost me almost a grand as I'd just started with a new insurance company that morning.

you should be aware of this
Leaving your car engine running could land you a fine under a controversial pollution crackdown.
A council has instructed traffic wardens to issue £20 penalty notices to drivers who keep their engines on while parked – and the charge could double to £40 if not paid promptly.
But the attempt to 'improve air quality' by North Lincolnshire Council has been condemned as a 'money-making scam'.

Yeaaars ago i had to go out to Slough to work on a Sunday morning in my ol' XR2i at the time...
Being an XR2i, i had some problems on the M4 on my way out but just wanted to get there and see what was wrong as i had plenty of time to spare.
When getting to near where i was to work i pulled over into a quiet sideroad.
Now having a Clifford alarm with the anti-hijack system thingy i usually always left the window ajar just incase BUT seeming that i was on the motorway i had them closed and yep...
Got out of the car to investigate under the bonnet, door closes and locks!
Noth the best of things to have an a Sunday morning, with no breakdown cover and a damn loud exhaust rumbling away :sad2:
After 20mins and much panicking with a few neighbours curtains twitching what was going on, a builder on a house that was being worked on came across and much to my relief he was quite handy with a bent coathanger

I know how that feels. Three times I locked my keys in the car at college. Luckly they had a mechanical department. Think the tutor got pretty p****d off with me in the end. :sad2:

put on a dawsons extreme front bumper, carisma rear spoiler and side skirts, k tec rear bumper and re sprayed it with the lovely flip paint.
NEVER AGAIN!!!
The GTA locked itself running at a Bruntingthorpe test day  Now the problem there is that there isn't a lock in the door ,it's just a switch that operates a solenoid in the body :crap:
However ...we found a way in the end ...he's not called Dellboy for nuffink ..
