View Full Version : Wash-Polish-?

Was just wondering what products are on the market to give paint on a car a better look. I wash it, been known to polish it once but what's used to get rid of swirl marks and make the car's 9 year old paintwork look fresh.

And no just because i own a Clio i most certainly don't 2 bucket wash blah blah spend the WHOLE day/weekend 'detailing' :ashamed: :cooter: :D

invest in a mop & some cutting compound g3 etc = super bright shiney paint!

All i do is wash it and leather it off, that's it, but fancy trying to get the swirl marks out and liven it up a bit.

It looks ok clean but could be better i guess

I wouldve polished them out...you clearly didn't see the Autoglym box of tricks I have ;)

I usually end up spending 2-3hrs cleaning my Clio :p...that gets dirty and there's no more than 2 weeks before washes :D

I know what you'll be doing next time i'm in the area :D along with the Sunday dinner :cry:

I don't fancy G3 and mopping it myself, knowing me i'd burn through the paintwork :ashamed:

If your looking to polish by hand, your best bet would be Auto Glym Super Resin Polish as it has abrasive in it.

But it's hard work for minimal gain, however, it will help mask swirl marks depending on how bad they are.

You could also try something like sratch x -

But for best results you would be looking at a machine polish with a cutting compound

Will have to purchase that Meguiars, i have a chap who does the paintwork on cars i've bought i could ask out of interest how much it would be to mop the car.

you need cliosport, the lads there are well up one correcting paint, one or 2 guys are crazy with info..

if polish fails you need to start using the 2 bucket method..:p

Cheers Dave, i've done without Cliospurt all this time so i'm sure i can manage :D I think i'll purchase that Meguiars X, i have the Auto Glym polish but as mentioned a lot of work for little gain in the way of swirl marks etc

its the one thing they do know about.. detailing world, i4detailing or something are places to look at goodies.. :)

The ScratchX is really just for very small areas as you will need to work it very hard still, believe me your arms would have fallen off long before you got the swirls out of even a very small panel with this. Swirl removal can only be achieved with a machine polisher unfortunately although some hand applied "polishes" have fillers to mask the swirls.
I think i'll have to start hiring me and my polisher out:)

wax an polish= to different things right,also the manufacturers seem to confuse the to,what you think you are buying to wax the car may in fact contain abrasives an be a polish....

You're right I "could" :)

Takes me too long and you can't really do that kind of stuff in the sunshine, because IT WILL be a lovely weekend.

Autoglym Super Resin Polish is a prime example. I've just bought some Poorboys Black Hole - A pre-wax glaze, which also contains some fillers. I got to use it last weekend for the first time, and it's the nuts :agree:

I spend a fortune on cleaning (I refuse to use the term detailing :D) products. My machine polisher is one of the best things I've bought :cool:

Bill, what polisher did you go for? I to spend a fortune on cleaning products but feel Im missing out on not having one of these! For such a small car the Clio is a pain to polish! But worth it :).

As for the Swirl X. I only used it last night and it did the job perfectly..Bloody cat decided to jump on the bonnet...15 minutes later the cat was in the river and the swirl x had done the job brilliantly!

an open day might see one car finished.. a propper paint resto takes a loooong time, but if you look on the detailing sites it is impressive what the propper guys can do.. im sure i saw some guys using cutting compounds on headlights etc as they werent shiny enough:smokin:

I appreciate what these 'detailing' guys do, no denying when you look at a car that's finished they look awesome. I've seen a thread when they buffed the 'scratches' from plastic headlights :eek: they take it very serious and IIRC charge a fair whack for a full on job.

Personally, the car gets a regular wash and leather but was thinking that maybe it deserves a little TLC :)

Tbh I only tried it very briefly, but it was too much effort for me (not that I'm lazy or anything :laugh: ). It just didn't seem to buff off properly.

So what are you using now? I didn't think Dodo did polishes??

BTW Bills choice of machine, supposed to be excellent but more importantly for a beginner it's a "Dual action" machine rather than a rotary. The other one to mention is the Meguires G220.

Full-Fat LimePrime contains abrasives. Some say that even that's too harsh for the Evo's super-soft paintwork :scared:

Because I'm new to machine polishing, and I've got a car with such soft/thin paint, I don't want to use anything too harsh, and risk damage. Even more so with my paint being pearlescent. That was why I got myself some Blackhole, so that it can help with it's fillers.

I tend to polish briefly, and regularly. The way I see it, it'll take a long time, but I'll get the finish I want in the end :laugh:

You can't put it back once you take it off.

The reason I take so long is I work up from soft pads and polish until I get the finish and then work back down again.

Ric, I've got access to machine polishing equipment...I've got a mate who valets cars for a living...hes a Vee Dubber too...cant get more anal than them geezas :D
