Why have Renault, especially retro Renaults got such a bad reputation. A lot of chaps I know are moving from Jap cars to VW this summer. They are all hyped about "going German"

As far as I'm concerened VW are ok but they aint LOADS and LOADS better than Renaults. When I mention to them a Renault 5 GT Turbo I get the exact same reaction.

"yeah but they break down mate theyre so unreliable"

I give them them the same reply, something a good mate of mine (Bommer) once said.

" A Renault 5 GT Turbo is only as unreliable as the chap driving it, If my Renault 5 Gt Turbo breaks down, i get it home fix it and its back on the road the next day, if your car breaks down your ****ed coz you know nothing about your car. So its off to a garage where ya get ya pants pulled down, if your lucky you may have it back the next week "

Has anyone been a Renault and a VW fan, can anyone make an unbiased comment on the Topic VW vs Frenchy (Renault)?

to me part of the fun of having a retro hot hatch is to get your hands dirty and learn more about the car!!!! you def get to do that with 5`s..... :agree: any problem i had i fixed myself and like you say usually by the next day. 2 of my mates have golf vr6`s and are well into there vw`s, every problem they`ve had its gone straight in the garage. (lazy enthusiasts) im no mechanic but i have a haynes manual and dont mind giving it a go... dunno about you but i buzz when i fix it myself!!! :D

I used to work for VW and i would say that any VW compaired to a renault of a simmilar age will definatly have a better build quality, the interior more so. out of all the VW's the 5 is always gunna be pitted aginst the Golf which is an awsom car (except the MK3) but i have mates with golf GTi's and Carrado G60's and thay have all said that my 5 is 10X more fun to drive, some of them have even sold there VW and brought a 5 just cuse thay drove mine once. But to me the fact that the golf was so common is the exact reason i would never own one (again). saying that other than a Turbo2, Clio V6 or Williams i cant think of another Renault i would want to own.

VW's dont appeal to me, but each to there own...

TBH the biggest attraction for a 5 for me is this club, if it wernt for this club & the people in it i wouldnt be interested in 5's, renault's etc. :D

All my car chums away from RTOC are into there dubs big time. I appreciate the time and effort that goes into them and slightly like them but they just don't have the Spirt and character of Renault turbos

Build quality of vw's are a millions times better than that of the equivilent Renault of the same age.

Always wanted a mk 1V gti turbo so I bought one. Awesome build quality and extremely comfty interior made it a brilliant motorway cruiser BUT on a b road blast it's the dullest slowest car on the planet. I sold it after 5 weeks of ownership.

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

TBH i love vw i have had 2 mk2 gtis. But when i got a 5 turbo i just fell in love with it. ive had loads of other cars. But the 5 turbo is like a drug it stays in your blood. You never foget that feeling when driving one. thats why i would never sell mine. :)

It's a Renault 18 but I guess they're the same. I couldn't get it to run right on my 5 so gave it to him to try but it still over fueled on the bug so he's running muy old MS carb now.

i've sniffed around a few vw''s early mk 1-2 and 3 golfs and there oftem rotting, early dashes and seats are always falling apart.. the few corrados i've seen have been bigger sh^tters than the worst gtt's i've seen..

engine wise and styling wise i still like them, but better............meh, about the same for the early ones.

as for a 182 or something and a newer golf, there gotta be a 6k or so price gap so its pointless talking about..

Having owned a mk3 VR6 in the recent past i can say im in no rush to get back to the 'VDub' scene anytime soon :sad2:
Not only did it feel incredibly heavy when attacking any sort of corner with speed but also couldnt justify the amount that 2.8 lump drank for the power it delivered :disagree:
The GT Turbo develops so much fun from that pre-historic tiny 1.4 lump and its sheer lightweight...u gotta luv it!!
Ive only rated the mk2 GTi (and even then not in the highest regards) but with the mk3 and even worse mk4 GTi T's, i lost all credibility for the badge!
But thats only my opinion

got myself a vw polo, build wise they are better, but the electrics and ecu are soooo bad.......horns packed up, tps plays up when it wants to, goes into limp home mode at least once a month, not to mention the gearbox being made out of chocolate, i could go on :sad2:

looks nice tho
