Well tonight I had an adventune... the head gasket blew.

I was parked up waiting for my friend to arrive and noticed the fan wasnt kicking in even though all wires were intact for the fan. I went to investigate further and found a random black wire not leading to anything and looked as though it had ripped out of a grip neck thing coming from below the water pipes near the rad but I couldn't see where it lead to.

The fan then randomly kicked in and I thought all was fine. So I hopped in to go home (25 miles away). Got to some traffic lights and saw loads of smoke and the car become hesistant. Looked at the temp guage and everything was normal.

Got out, took the water cap off and pressure was high, water everywhere and the infamous milky substance.

Anyway I then filled the water back up and thought I wanted to get home. Turned the car back on and began to drive back to Telford... everything was fine all the way and I thought I would make it back home before everything went bad...got 5mins from home and the temp shot right up (I had to stop at some damn traffic lights otherwise I would have made it). So had to turn can off, leave it round my sister's mates house (lucky I pulled up right next to it) and got a lift home from mumsy :D

So now my feelow RTOCers, is there anyone in the midlands that will help change the head gasket on the car so it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. Willing to get my handds dirty ;)

Thanks in advanced - Poor Sil5ver

That sucks mate... but really... changing the head gasket isn't that hard a job. Get yourself a Haynes manual and do it yourself! ;) Only thing is... the head probably got warped a bit due to the high temperature, so you need to get it skimmed... Good luck mate!

Right first of all I have to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU to minty83 who came down today and took the head off for me. Showed me how it's done getting your hands dirty...I personally would have shat myself.

Also he took me in the exige which was just ridiculous...absolute monster of a car!

Right now to the epic fail of my head gasket. Took the head off and found splits in the head (pics to follow) and I want your guys opinion as to whether to get it repaired or scrap it once I get the pics up. There wasn't much oil and water so I think we caught it at an early stage.

Sure the guy I got it from said it had head work but none was evident (unless I'm making that up in which case I apologise).

I'd say it's repairable, although for the money your gonna spend on a repair and skim, you may aswell buy one that's been done, take the head to Telford engines opposite new inn's garage on the trench road they'll tell you what work will need to be done,

p.s it's tone Si perrys mate, I had the escort rs2000 4x4 got me a 5 now, just need to get it running properly!

Ha hi tone, got yourself a 5! I have sent the head off already to get done should be back with me soon and cost less than getting another one..

Get some pics of the 5 up, is it a standard one?

Yea I couldn't resist, mint little cars, pretty standard except alloys and a air filter, got some big plans for her though, I'll put some pics up later, should be on the road for the end of the month.

Are we talking about the little crack between the valves? If so I wouldn't worry too much about them....... :)

:agree: It's fairly common to see a crack between the valves.

Providing it hasn't cracked all the way into the valve seat and/or the oil gallery, then it won't cause a problem.
