View Full Version : I need a good flocking....
Right gents, this might be a topic closer to the mark on Cliosport but here goes...
I've had to make some modifications to my Dashboard for a number of reasons and now i need to make it all look like 1 piece. So I was looking into the options of getting it flocked... Does anyone have any good contacts for getting things flocked? or any advice on how best to do it yourself?
Heres a pic of a dash thats been done incase anyones wondering what it is

I saw that dash on Clio sport looked a tidy job and cheap too. Have a read on this link as there are a few recommended places. I'm going to use the Watford branch ian said as it's very close.

There are different length fibres. On their website they say only 1mm.
The people in Watford I went to do loads of different lengths from 4mm down to what I had which is what the Subaru and Mitsi WRC teams had to stop glare. I had 0.5mm is some parts and 0.7 in others.
There was a lot of masking around the instrument panel which is why it was more expensive.
The Watford people can put a drawing into the flock in another colour, etc. You send them the drawing they make a print and somehow do it. He showed me, very intricate.
They can also make any custom colour you want in their sizeable factory. http://www.flocking.co.uk/

I will pm him. I asked on here as I thought I would be a common question regarding dash prices.
Thomas and Vines originally quoted me about £25 for the dash.
The price went up to £46 as I had the fiddly little bits around the 'clocks' done which took a lot more time as it's a close fitting part so I didn't want to thicken any of the mating faces with glue and flock, hence all the masking.
They carry a large stock of various lengths and colours of flock. Some particularly nice colours.
I thought about getting my domestic loudspeakers flocked in maybe 4mm white or the satin purple.

has anybody done a 5 dash to see what it looks like?

There are different length fibres. On their website they say only 1mm.
We can order various lengths and any colour you want, we only stock 1mm though as that's standard issue. We're only a small company so it's not worth us stocking every colour in every length as it would leave us £1000's out of pocket carrying stock that very few people would ever want. It only takes a day for anything we order to arrive anyway!
I imagine if they're having to spend ages masking, that they're using a spray glue then just chuck it in a big bad industrial machine, which we don't.
We can put patterns, pictures or whatever you like into flock & mix colours :)
If you don't want to come to us Ian that's fine but I don't appreciate you suggesting we're ill equipped, have no idea and just the general negative tone. £25 sounds very unrealistic for a full dash, the glue we use costs more than that per pot so we would make practically nothing at that price
Average price for a dash is £100 (less your 20%) and takes around a week :)

So £80 for a dash all in. That's fair :)
Good response :)
Don't mean to sound negative about your operation. Just pointing out to members that there are more then one length of fibre and one other company stocks this and offers custom colours and pattern which you hither to had not, unless I didn't see that on your website. Also they would appear to be very competitively priced.
I believe they did use electrically conductive spray glue. I think the flock for my dash went on by hand held electrostatic spray 'funnel' done in a spray booth.
It says on their website they are the UKs importer for the type of glue they use. Maybe the glue is cheaper for them?
As I said, I don't care who the members go to just that I make sure they have the information to make the best choice to suit what they want to do.
Since my post, you've expanded on what you can offer which is only a good result for this clubs members. :) Thank you.
£25 sounds very unrealistic for a full dash
Maybe it was.
This is what I had done.
£25 did not include the instrument panel surround which took the most time.

Ah so it was just the top/hood part then? In which case that's quite a reasonable price :)
We use a conductive 2 part epoxy resin which we put pigment in to match the colour of the flock being used, it goes on by hand then the machine is a hand held affair like you described.
We'll be doing a few 'off the wall' demo pieces in the coming months to show what's possible which will be on the site and at any shows we do. Website could really use updating to be fair, we have a lot on at the minute though with various group buys and show season on its way!

We haven't opened yours yet (we leave them packaged until we get round to them, makes it easier to keep track of whose is which) I think you're now second in line and we usually do 3 or 4 a time. You should have it back next week ;)
On the matter of flocking limbs, I've been trying to convince someone to let me flock them a moustache on but nobodies gone for it

Looks a bit marked in the pics Ashy? Go over it with a damp cloth (scrub the marks with it), should come up spotless :)
Unless it's just the pics?
Glad you're happy with it anyway :agree:
I popped round Ashy's on wed for a few bits and pieces, had a look at his new dash and it looks even better in the flesh. I couldn't see any marks at all, I know there were a few problems with the bubble wrap leaving small marks on some of the cliopsort lads but Ashy's looked first class.
I can see how some people could become obsessed with it though, and get a bit carried away flocking everything in sight :)

So many people want everything on their dash doing, inside all the vents and all the switches etc and we always advise against it, starts to look like a kids toy if you go too far with it!
The majority of our customers always come back for more though ;)
Right, finished fitting all my bits today :)
Once the new dash was in the old steering wheel looked shockingly old!!
So I bought a new wheel and boss, well happy with the new look :agree:
