engine overhaul

i have a spare engine in my 5 i have for breaking, it seems ok but when car was in working order it was a bit tappety, i have no stripped the car and almosthave the engine out and was planning to rebuild it as a spare for my one.

can the tappets be adjusted whilst simply while the engines out or does it require fine tuning with engine being able to run?

also if i have the engine out stripped and re built how do i prevent the parts becoming seized etc as it'll have no oilin it?

When it's all back together, you can set the tappets when it's still on the engine stand ready for the first time it fires up inside the car.

To keep it all nice and free, some oil down the bores is all you need.

I live abroad, and went over a year between rebuild and turning the engine over, and it was fine with this method.
