i was just thinking,
if you were to have the block refaced would the liners also have to be done?

would you not need to do the piston tops, too?

thats what im asking!

surely some one here has had there block refaced?? pls tell what else was done?

im only asking as ive heard about everyone refacing the cylinder heads but not the block?
is it down to the block being cast iron? and less likely to warp etc?

so if you were to reface the block say 2thou, thats also 2thou off the liner tops and the same again for the piston crowns?

I' not sure if this what you mean.

But I know that my engine builder had my block machined as he wasn't happy with the amount of liner protrusion there was as standard. As far as I know my pistons and liners whhere left alone.

If you're decking the block so much you need to do the pistons then your block is fecked :coffee:
We're talking thous here and then the liners to suit min protrusion

If your block needs decking then throw it away and get another, a decent, straight block should be available for the cost of the machining.

ok guys, how do they skim the liners then, out of the block on there own?

clee
25-02-2010, 19:27
You would have to do them on their own .They are wet floating so how would you hold them in the block ?
It ,as said ,would work out cheaper to just scrap it and get another .
You could get different thickness bottom seals but is really is not worth the hassle .

I iz just asking lee.
So this is how it would go

Skim block
put liners back in
measure protrusion of each liner and skim that amount off accordingly (whats the accepted way to measure protrusion in this senario)
Ready to go aslong as its not a major amount that needs skimming

Arent the liner seals different thickness's?

i was just interested in what the process envolved. ive never had to do this and going by what would need to be done i wouldnt even bother doing this.

Lee, some off us dont have years of experience, so rely on older and wiser members to educate us.;). This is something that i always wondered, not that i was ever thinking of doing, just interested to know. :p:D

" Arent the liner seals different thickness's? "

Yes, but if you've cleaned up the block even a couple of thou then the liners will protrude too much .
The liners are far easier to hold tolerance on due to the method of manufacture .All of the liners I've pulled out of the V6 lumps are dead on to each other .The blocks I've depth mic'd and they are the bits that wander .

no, not in the C1J. C1E and C1C did from memory, they were a flat seal rarther than an O-ring.

Yes all need doing seperately, the block and liners individually. Mike spencer used to have this done to raise cylinder squish (skim the block, liners and the raised portion off the piston to get the c/r back to where it was - the result was a reduced piston-to-quench distance)

C1J ,PAH!!
we get 6 different thicknesses and three materials for the Z7U

Ye i do think the more experienced members are being a bit too harsh on the lesser experienced ones sometimes... or maybe expect more from them..

come on guys, sort it out! :coffee:

I wasn't being harsh .It was a rhetorical question . It's just the way I speak :sad2: I could have flowered it up with superfluous lols and imo etc
That's the trouble with online stuff ,very easy to get the wrong idea about people .

well, the C1J is in a different class lee, you can't be expected to understand ;)

- and just incase anyone thinks I was supporting the C1J, I wasn't. I hate them, I was being sarcastic
