Adey was on about lowering his car when he brought it, something I don't need asking twice about :D

He came to mine a few Saturdays back, had some bits off me, like you do whilst I set about attacking the rear beam...:coffee:...

Anyhow, I spent nigh on 4-5hrs trying to remove the torsion bars, the beam etc. Gave up in the end as they were seized good and proper.

Adey said he'd heard about the Renault 19 16v rear beam being a straight swap. Schakal pretty much confirmed it so he managed to source a beam.

The front suspension needed a freshen up too so he got hold of some R5GTT struts and lowering springs, -50mm to come, poly'd the top mounts, new bearings etc gave them a lick of paint and they looked as good as new. He also brought some lower arms with new ball joints.

We attacked the car Saturday morning, just gone 10ish after a couple of cups of tea and by half 12 we had completely swapped and replaced the front suspension components, good going we thought :)

After a couple of bacon and egg sarnies..EACH ;)...we cracked on with the rear beam. We had the beam off, swapping the necessary vital parts and torsion bars out and back ON, within 3-4hrs.

It wasnt that plain sailing...the brake lines were a bit tight to undo and looked a little delicate, for some reason we had to adjust the handbrake cable even thought it came off with ease ...when I was refitting the torsion bars, the passenger side bar refused to go in...then to top it off, we broke a bleed nipple on the rear caliper, fortunately, I had a spare caliper to replace it with :D

When we lowered the car off the jack/axle stands, the stance was completely different and it looked awesome. In the end we didnt actually lower the car, the 19 16v beam is set at STANDARD height and once fitted to the 11T, looked so much lower than before :wasntme:

Take a look at the few pics we managed to take, I think we had a pretty sucessful day :agree:

cheers spooky,on the 9 bud you have funny arches that are flat not round, the beam being wider will prob catch on the 9 ones, only need minor tweeking on the 11

Really would depend on your drop and wheel choice, feels a fair bit firmer to drive on than the stock 11 one too

standard probably, maybe 35mm tops on standard wheels if i do lower it.

Adey aka Ewok
22-02-2010, 21:35
i have the 11 turbo down as

front track 54.9inch
rear track 53.4inch

and the 19 16v chamade

front track 56.1inch
rear track 55.4inch

so it is wider, hmm what drivesafts would i use, the 19 ones? and shocks? any ideas people as ive never done any sort of track change on a car before

Spooky
22-02-2010, 21:47
Driveshaft swap makes sense, one way to find out :p

Or you could just have super neggy camber :D

Adey aka Ewok
22-02-2010, 21:49
if we push out the front another half inch each side and not change the shocks somehow itll have stupid camber

Adey aka Ewok
22-02-2010, 21:52
or do i just increase the track with spacers?

Spooky
22-02-2010, 21:54
Spacer idea is a good one, didn't we mention that on Saturday, I'm sure we did.

Change the wheels...maybe cup rimmage...nice bit of offset there :p

statistics and damn lies...

I have the N/S driveshafts being 7mm longer on the R11 and the O/S ones being the same length. Make your own mind up

sticking with 15s bud, think ill look into some bolt on spacers to bring the fronts out another 20mm

This is a good pic, the suspension has settled and levelled out some more, Adey says it holds the road so much better :agree:

I usually upload a few pics on Facebook but this thread is a good 'time line' of mods so I'll keep it going :agree:

also have the wheel centers and missing trim bits before anyone pokes in and says get them sorted. defo holds the road good, no skittishnes like you get from a decked 5, think its because the rear shocks are upright and still has travel that the 5 looses for having a angled rear shock, cheers for the help spookdev tuning:agree:

Cheers for the help lads, thanks to spooky and retardo (ricardo) for the engine swap on Friday all in hope of hitting the track on sat all was going well until the car threw a belt off mid lap, and then in true rtoc spirt schakal was able to grab a belt for me and drop it off at the track so I could continue :-D all was well until a rear brake pad made a quick exit and left me with a brake pedal on the floor at the end of the straight, luckly no major damage was caused and a new pair of pants needed along with some new front tyres, cheers again

LOL!

So I get a text Wednesday night, 'bottom end gone'...leading me to think Ade is pulling my master of ceremonies...an hour or so later, get off the phone, he's explained hes pretty much killed the engine...any chance we could get it out and my old spare in, come Thursday after work...as always, I said I was game :p...

Get another phonecall, Ades got Friday off so no mad midnight PMT sesh was needed. After it was towed to mine from Glos...we got to pull the car apart a little...Ade said he thought the rad was to blame and it would seem he was on the money...the rad had split internally, mixing up the oil/water to a treacle like mess!!! It had worked its way ALL the way round the cooling system, the engine, a nightmare clean up job!

I spent a while cleaning what I could with fairy and hot water, worked well :smokin:

SO...the car was at mine on Thursday...we got up Friday morning and pulled it apart and lifted the engine out...

Couldn't find any motor factor selling a valeo green box clutch locally so Ade brought a new Sachs clutch to mate up to his 9 slot flywheel...which he got off an engine he brought for peanuts...( shove yer 9 slot up yer rusty ring hole ;);) )...

Fitted that all up with some pearl engine mounts for a Ren 5 GTT...yes, the Ren 5 GTT shares the SAME engine mount RUBBERS as the R11T. The only difference we noticed between the 2 models was the mounting plates...the R11T plates are taller so they have to be used with the GTT rubbers ;)

Refitted the engine, got the rad in etc and she fired up FIRST time...in reverse ...when we fitted the 'box, we did it with the engine sat on the crank pulley so on its side, apparently, reverse gear slid over and locked it into reverse...so when refitted, even though we thought we had neutral, we didn't...THANK YOU COLIN COOK for the Tech Support on the phone and Sparkie for ze flywheel advice :agree::agree::agree:

Got the car down, no major oil or water leaks...boost and oil hoses today were a bit loose/leaky...probably down to Ricardos limp wrist ;)...and it had a very sludgy header tank for obvious reasons, just need to clean it out with some washing powder now...

Adey got home safe n sound and as you may have heard or seen, got it to Llandow :agree::agree::agree:

Thanks to Riccy for popping down, other than the 'help' he gave us and the ear ache Mich gave him, I'd say we all had a good laugh :agree::)
