Hi,

Just wondering about a couple of things...

We got the torque settings for the head bolts from Auto Data, but it's saying that we need to run the car for 20mins (obvioulsy to give room for expansion etc) and then torque the bolts up again.

We've put the new head on and torqued the bolts up and will do it the way it says, but I just wondered if this is what you have done or would normally do when changing a head gasket on a 5? Just seems very lond-winded as you have to take it apart and put it back together twice!

Also, should there be washers between the bolts and head as the new uprated (or whatever they are) bolts didn't come with any washers but the old head had them on? The bolts were scoring the head so we put some on anyway.

Hi, yes i re-torque the head bolts, i torque them down, run the engine for 20 mins and then leave it overnight, the following day undo each head bolt one at a time and retorque before moving onto the next bolt. As for washers, the six in the centre of the head have them, the 4 holding domn the rocker shaft supports don't.

Torque settings all depend on what bolts you are using std or the H/T 12.9 jobbies. With the H/T 12.9's and a blue seal (Mellior) h/g if your torque them down to 80nm you don't need to re-torque I never have and never had any probs.

Yea that's great thanks.:cool:

They are the uprated ones - torqued to 35nm and then 65nm (AutoData)

Do they need to be torqued tighter than that then?

With the 12.9 HT bolts and a blue seal gasket (Mellior gasket) you can torque them down anywhere from 65nm - 90nm

I have always used 80nm as recomend by a reputable RTOC member who I have faith and trust and I have never re-torqued and no problems what so ever.

I personally would suggest re-tighten them to 80nm and then leave it all alone and don't forget to re-do the tappets :)

Washers. You need the extra thick ones from Reanult.

Ordinary thin washers allow the bolts to dent into the head bending the thin washer in with it. It ruins the cylinder head as you can't get the right torque after that.
