Ive fitted a mechanical oil pressure gauge, so the oil physically travels up a nylon tube to give the reading, its been put in place of the original sender. I started the car today, but the pressure seems to fluctuate, a few psi, is this morning, or should i of some how bled up the oil system or somthing. ? ,

Also to add, what kind of oil pressure (psi) should i be looking at to make sure my oil pump is functioning properly, before i put my new turbo on.

once its warmed up it should sit at a steady rate, an i think it about 10psi for every 1k revs ie 4.5k should give approx 45psi depend on oil grade your usin :)

Also depends if the oil is cold or up to temp

with the oil hot, you need to see at least 45psi at 3k rpm.

Ok i will check to see if im achieving that pressure tomorrow. As for the fluctuating, its only a few psi, but seems to go in turn with the engine, Maybe a video would be best to show it.

If you bleed your gauge, the pressure reading (when you turn car off) takes about 10seconds to drop...With out bleeding its more instant from my findings... so i dont bleed mine....

Do you find your gauges has the fluctuation from bleeding..All i did was literally , screw it onto the back of the gauge, crank the engine over a few times with no king lead on the dizzy, then started the engine.

i cant say mine jumps around etc... Not the fastest gauge ive seen in my life but does its job ok for what i want it far, which is for if my oil filter on the feed pipe to turbo blocks...

I've always wondered this. I have an electronic SPA gauge, and it jumps all over the place when its cold from 40-50psi but when its warm it'll hover round the 45psi mark varying by 1-2psi every now and again, why does it vary?

sorry to jump on this, you say 45psi but thats obviously the reading from your aftermarket gauges, how does the psi corrispond to the 1234 on the standard gauge?

i assume each of the numbers is a certain amount as on the boost gauge?

im dying to get home now to check the oil pressure.. :( cumon work.. hurry up n finish

When my gauge does work it corresponds to all sorts of numbers! I have had 45psi (spa) showing in the hatched area on the standard gauge. My understanding is each is a multiple of 10. So 1=10psi 2=20psi 30=30psi etc etc

another querie i have is, now i have removed my oil pressure sender , and instead plumbed in my new mechanical gauge, my oil light is on constant, is there a way i can turn this off ?

on the front side of the sump look up and you should be able to see a sensor maybe its wired the wrong way or the sensor past it. could be one those 18 year old bits.

un plug the low oil level sensor it might go off

will post a picture up in files later off it and my oil pressure gauge and fitting kit :)

mech oil pressure gauge and fitting kit i got for next to nothing, brand new

it reads

on tick over when first started in the day -- just over 3 bar , when reved it go's upto about 4 bar mayby more.

when its warm shows about 1 bar, it shows next to nothing when really hot but it has oil pressure. Driving around sts around 2 1/3 bar. When reved to 4500rpm just over 3 bar

14.5psi = 1 bar correct if wrong:ashamed:around there

oh no yet another issue looming then. my car when i first turn it on sits between 2/3 on the standard gauge, then normally hangs around 2 is this ok or is it in fact something to be concerned about?

ross, no thats where my oe oil pressure gauge sat . my oil gauge is after market

ok, ive been to test my oil pressure, and im worreid at 3krpm it sits at around 42 psi..

as for the fluctuations ive found my engine has a slight miss when no choke is applied and its left to idle, this is causing the fluctuations.

Would i be needed a oil pump rebuild kit :(

ive also found a small oil leak where my oil gauge connects into the bottom of the union which then goes into the block and to the turbo, could this cause any of the readings to be inaccurate?

from the manual:

with oil @80C

pressure should be
>1bar (14.5psi) at idle
>3bar (43.5psi) at 4000rpm

here is a video, , i think it says it all really

whats your opinions

I think you need fuel mate ;) sorry couldnt help it. Looks ok to me, you'll have to see when the engine has load on it though!

what kind of pressure do you have on 3krpm displaying on that dave?

dave j gtt
06-10-2008, 19:48
when at a stand still and warn around 3 bar. when driving at 3k a little bit less ;)
my old standard oe one , use to read around 2 bar and up to 3bar when blasted full throttle.

thinking it may be best to just fork out on a rebuild kit for the oil pump :(

dave j gtt
06-10-2008, 19:55
go do that , then if done right you'll know it will be ok

make sure your sump gets put back on right ;) clean both surfaces and use plenty of sealent round the u shape gaskets , good luck you'll need it.

to be fair are you talking the piss with all the questions , i must of spent 2 hours answering. hope your going get you hands dirty and put some pics up. and do the little thing to your car :)

yea, shudnt have any problems with the sump, got no idea how to fit the oil pump rebuild kit as of yet though.

take the oil pump apart im sure you can measure the mechanisms with feeler guages to check if its worn im sure its in one of the haynes manuals

42psi @ 3k is fine, aslong as that is on a hot engine. Mine is exactly the same, these engines dont make a lot of oil pressure.

Don't panic & waste money rebuilding the pump;)

engine had been running a good 5 or so mins at around 1.2krpm, water temp was around 60°. , would that be considered a warm engine ?

Brigsy
06-10-2008, 21:53
Take it for a drive, after a few miles the oil will be fully warmed up. Also don't worry if you only see 10 psi when hot on idle.

ah , thats a little difficult, as at the moment the car has no tax, mot or insurance, plus its a little blocked on the drive :P
