Curry nights the day after the "wet squeeky farts"
Well this is how my arse feels about the next task.
FITTING THE OIL RETURN.
Ive been told drilling the block is a much better idea than the sub as the drive shafts will get in the way.
Any tips in drilling into a cast block??? slow, fast, lots of pressure, as you can imagine i could easy **** the whole job up by cocking this is.. its a m20 1.5 thread too so i need to tapp it....... does cast tap ok??
Pplease help as this is the last thing to do and it can be put together over the weekend as my exhaust is now complete
Good ,new bits and slow with plenty of suds .Open it out to 20 after a couple of pilot drills .It should tap OK but you will need to find a thick area to get a few threads in .
What are you using to tap with ? If on a machine it should be OK but if by hand make sure you can get the holder to swing fully 360 .
I had my V6 block drilled to tie in the center caps ,but did it on a CNC .

Thats probably the best way to do it.
Are there no 'blanked off' bolt holes on the block you could use?
Also, you could drill the hole and weld an adapter to it so you don't have to rethread the hole you've created :)
Would be better to use an existing hole .That's what I'm doing on the V6 as the std drain is now blocked by the new starter .Luckily there is a pipe nearby that was for the breather drain so can use that .

As Lee says, slow and steady wins the race when it comes to drilling cast iron. New drill bits are important, if you find your having to apply a lot of pressure then they need a sharpen up.
Only thing to add to what Lee says is DO NOT drill out to 20mm or it will be too big for an M20 thread, tapping drill size for M20 is 17.5mm according to my Zeus book, althou you'll be fine with 18mm (it'll make it easier to tap), no bigger than 18mm thou.

Well yes, what he said ,open up to tapping size not 20 ...But ....It's a M20x1.5 so the tapping size is 18.5 :coffee:
Useful tip .
For course metric threads the thread size minus the pitch will give you the tapping drill size .For fine pitch it works the same up to a point ,but not the really big sizes .

Not sure if i would like to drill the block , unless your taking the sump off to clean it all out. Im sure the sump would be the best way and its alloy so would be easier to modify in any case.
The problem Andy has is that clio drive shafts come in two arrangements. The first is unequal driveshafts direct from the gear box the second is using an intermediate shaft along the rear of the engine into a bracket/carrier.
Mine has the intermediate shaft so I have my drain in the sump as below.

If it was me I'd be tempted to drill/tap the sump and put an intermediate drive shaft set up on there.

the "connector is a " 1/2 BSP been given a 19mm drill bit too........ that the place said i needed for the tap... :)
Ill practise in a old metal block first :)
