why would you want too when it comes out the top easily?

you'll need to disconnect the usual, exhaust, wiring, cables etc...

then...

front bumper, steering rack pinch bolt, unthread or remove downpipe where it joins onto system, remove rad, shocks from the hubs and then calipers off the hubs, subframe to chassis rail support brackets at the top, then undo the 4 subframe bolts (the back ones will most likely spin as they are held in by crap captive clips) and then lift off the car from the subframe

ps. probably missed a few vital stages from there but u'll get the gist

i removed the engine through the top on my donor car, but on the new car once the engines ready i was going to drop the subframe and put it in from below...

for fear of scratching anything rather than ease.

so any info much appreciated as markey just did :D

bribe a few mates with beer or bacon rolls to help manouver on the engine crane, and use old towells to protect the paint and bobs your teapot

The only advantage of doing it from below is you can leave the drive shafts on. Process is the same as for out the top, undo EVERYTHING the to drop it out below undo strut top bolts, support engine, undo 4 subframe bolts and lower engine or raise the car on a 2 post ramp.

If your re-fitting this way is a little easier as you can mont the engine onto the engine mounts, fit the running gear and put a load of hoses on and put the downpipe on too.

I usually just pull it out the top with a couple of mates and loads of rags / towels to protect the paint though. Unless you have a 2 post ramp...

i take off the bottom pulley and slide it off the box, leaving driveshafts etc in the box if i just need the engine itself out

I do the same, its fast & easy, no messing about with shafts/box oil etc. As long as your careful no paintwork is damaged, also the car can stay on its wheels making it easier to move.

Tried this once on my own, got it about 30cm in the air, then thought I was going to die!

I attempted it without the head and gearbox, and it still brought about a world of pain, just couldnt get it over the front of the car.
