5 all day every day no question really , jap cars only worth having are integra tye r, nsx, evo and skyline and big bhp fives can hold there own even against these in my opinion. :)

they are pritty expensive most of them are over 3k on pistonheads.

firstchoicegary
08-02-2010, 22:18

LampsR5
08-02-2010, 22:25
they are like a micra with a turbo nothing more, horrid inside and not really that quick, no comparrison to a 5

firstchoicegary

if you like them mate, then go for it.

interior is a bit gash, but they're more reliable & tunable than the 5.

power steering & air con in them if it's of any intrest to you?

firstchoicegary
08-02-2010, 22:30
are they more tunable didnt know that but come on whats more cult???

hmm! have you drove one?

a glanza running a bar boost against a 5 running a bar boost,i'd put a lot of money on the glanza winning.

a guy a know has a starlet turbo with 200bhp and is very fast.i dont think i would want to sell my 5 for one though as i love the retro style plus smoking a scooby or a type r in a L reg 5 dont think u can beat it.would need to drive one first to see what i think.

firstchoicegary
08-02-2010, 22:40
i dont want one , u posted thread thought you wanted one, good kkep five im looking again to get one my old five was unbelievable, ive had bmws, maserati, williams, but the five i had would wipe the floor with em, (well up to 100mph!)

LampsR5
08-02-2010, 22:42
on a renault owners club forum there are bound to be more people saying the 5 we live and breath them and im sure its vice versa on the starlet forums :) but as some have had experience with both cars there opinions may mean more, either way its still down to you which one you prefer.

firstchoicegary
08-02-2010, 22:42
my old five had scoobys evos, audi tt's even beat a evo 8 and sunny gtir at santa pod.

Once again, a non-R5 gets the bashing because its, well, not an R5 ;)

the 4efte engine is leagues ahead of the R5's c1j. It's not uncommon to see 260hp from those engine's with trap speeds at the drag strip to proove it, and with less cc's than the c1j.

D4WNO
08-02-2010, 23:31
I'm pretty sure the Glanza would mightily annihilate the 5's, what are you people talking about? Lol

Plus, they still go for over £4k+ for a half-decent one (trust me, been looking, lol)

D4WNO
08-02-2010, 23:36
is the starlet not the uk version and the glanza is jap?

It's my understanding that the 1.3 Starlet is a UK model, but all the GT's (whether Starlet/Glanza) are Jap imports.

:goodpost:

It all depends on what you want, bang for buck the C1J is a good starter for 10, but will always be agricultural compared to any remotely modern engine. But then more modern engines are usually more expensive to tune to a similar bhp/tonne up to / around a 200 - 220 bhp C1J.

You first need to understand what you mean by 'best' as it depends on perspective and application...:agree: For me, best is v tight hairpins and handbrakes, getting sideways and pretending to be Ragnotti... then using 'da boost' to hurtle towards the next one:laugh::burnrubber: For others the thrill of the 1/4 mile or fast B roads is what spins their props.

if the japs built a 5 gtt the glanza starlet would be what they would come up with, i think they are just as quick as a 5 if not quicker and in general they are just like a very well built 5

but i would still have a 5 before one of those, they aint as cool!

Spooky
09-02-2010, 00:32
cracking little cars, wouldnt buy one though :p

i prefer driving a gtt over one purely from a driving perspective, i also think there are other cars that are more, well, fun to drive in my eyes :)

get a ph1 172 for that sort of money...itbs...win :D

having owned a 270hp glanza/and a starlet gt 220hp the engines are alot more advanced then the c1j. theres a cpl of lads on the toyota forum who run 300+ and on the track;) which a 5 woudnt last 5 mins on track. and if u arnt happy with the 1300cc u can fit a 1.5 bottom end. then theres the build quility:) overall there very good cars.might not be to everyones taste looks wise.

as a matter of interest, is the 5 speed box on the glanza quite 'notchy' - i.e tough to get into 1 and 2nd?
reason i ask is that my missus has got the N/A version of the turbo engine in her corolla G6, complete with 6 speed box, but it can be a nightmare getting it into gear sometimes.
the engine is spot on though, never goes wrong, always starts. and for a 1.3 in a heavy shell, from 4k onwards you can actually feel it pulling quite well.:agree:

steveT2
09-02-2010, 09:28
never had a problem with mine. but it has been known gearbox's can be a weak spot on them. heres a nice vid for u to enjoy http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=srslma#p/u/0/yqV3ipH-1X0

Nayls
09-02-2010, 10:50
i'd actually say the glanza gear change is smoother than it is in the 5.

maybe the 6 speed is different though?

My brothers mate had a track spec starlet, imported from Japan... was running 250bhp+ LSD, decent pads, really super lightweight,

Having never been round Brands Indy before, he was well into the 58's after a few hours (on T1Rs)... fairly impressive id say... though has none of the retro cool of the 5.... :)

I have a renault 5 gt at 1 bar, I also have a starlet ep82 gt turbo which I also have running 1 bar, I personally would like to drive and keep the r5, however my sensible side is telling me to keep the starlet gt and get rid the r5, sensible side never :wasntme:, the r5 is no longer for sale, anyone looking for a starlet turbo ??
test drives are welcome to help make up ur mind.

the best way to decide which car to have...

do you like people coming up to your car and saying
"my mate had one of these, 3000bhp, gt tuning everything, blew it up too many times tho so sold it....."

if the answer to the above is no, then get a starlet

I once had guy come up to me and say more or less the same, but then he came out with " mine was quicker than rolands at gt tuning, I bored it out to a 1800cc"

i get it all the time, even from old people in the street... its scary they all know its a turbo and they all know someone who has blown up, crashed and got fecked up or had the fastest one in the world

went out in a glanza today, closest feeling car to a 5 gt turbo. but still it just made me want to get my 5 on the road, not sell it for a glanza. Very nice drive tho. never been out in a completely standard 5 so difficult to compare. The thing that sways me personally to the 5 is its character, the fact that its been around 20+ years everyone knows of it and the comoradary(spelling?) between owners is great. also the fact that its easy enough to modify and change yourself. i personally wouldnt want to hack at things on a glanza. The interior was pretty poor on the glanza also.

First post!

the starlet turbo started in 1986 with the ep71 turbo.

the ep82 gt turbo started production in 90 also making it a 2o year old hot hatch.
in regards to desgn and build quality its in a different league to the renault 5 turbo.

thats not to say both are fast.

they are way way more tunable,

+ 4x4 versions were available in japan to turbo

There nice cars, my mate has one, but the interior is disgraceful! The roof lining is like a tent! There little angry micras with a turbo! They have major tune potential, I'd rather have a pulsar though

gtt glanza i think not, as it says on the back of my forklift at the mo. To wind up a m8 at work who has a glanza and he drives it like a granny he should have got the micra lol
